loved it- love that she has a vision and takes risks
this song from 20 years ago was cutting edge, as CDs were just becoming mainstream and only graphic designers and business people were using PCs and the visual Web was not "invented" yet
A few musicians/singers seem to only make music that I like. Joanna is one. The Alan Parsons Project is another. Kate Bush is not. Some of her work resonates within me, and some just makes a dull thud. Deeper Understanding is one of those thuds.
Yeah, I can understand that. I just feel the same with so many artists (no matter I respect them or not)... Actually, I think we all do. What's more original in your case is that Kate Bush most of the time generates a "love-or-hate" reaction except some liking one or two "hits".
To be frank "Deeper Understanding" is far from being a favourite KB song of mine, but like 99% of her work, I find it very interesting, especially when you think about the "prophetic" aspect of the subject. "DU" was released in 1989 after-all (a time when relationship with computers was still experimental and professional in restricted areas, certainly not as familiar as it is for everyone as it is now)... Re-releasing this more than 20 years later definitely emphasize this fact and makes me see it in a funny way...
Same with "Experiment IV" (I really don't like it as a song) released in 1986, which was dealing about the creation of a weapon based on "sound". This weapon was actually created a very few years ago....
Just read this thread for the first time. I wonder how Juniper got on with following Pierre's Kate Bush listening plan last September.
I note that Pierre suggested either starting at the beginning and working forwards (very sensible), or starting from her latest releases and working backwards (ok - that seems reasonable, too).
But I personally think that Bush's best work came in the middle. Never Forever is wonderful, The Dreaming is weird and wonderful; and Hounds Of Love is perhaps not quite as weird but if anything a little more wonderful.
Her earliest albums, The Kick Inside and Lionheart contain some good songs but are less appealing somehow (to me), and her later work (The Sensual World, The Red Shoes, and Aerial) don't really do it for me. Of the uncollected stuff, check out Lord Of The Ready River, Ran-Tan Waltz, and Un Baiser D'Enfant, the Live On Stage EP, and the Organon Mix of Cloudbusting. They are my recommendations, for what they're worth.
For me, not as immediate as I expected it to be... Some things kept me from liking it at first hear. The sound engineering is very inadequate sometimes ("Flower of the Mountain" used too much bass and the vocals are horrible. "Rubberband Girl" sounds like a demo, the sound really is awful!) and the main thing was the choice for the sequencing...
So I "reworked" the whole thing. Someone in the UK KB forum enhanced the sound for "Rubberband Girl" and I burned a new cd with a more appropriate sequencing which now is:
1-Lily 2-Deeper Understanding 3-Never Be Mine 4-The Red Shoes 5-Song of Salomon 6-This Woman's Work 7-Flower of the Mountain 8-Top of the city 9-And So is Love 10-Rubberband Girl 11-Moments of Pleasure
And now, I have to admit "Director's Cut" is a real masterpiece! Definitely a new album to me, not only a re-worked version of old songs. I just love it! But I still think she shouldn't have done it with "The Sensual World": I hate her new singing, James Joyce original "lyrics" work far less better than Kate's original, the sound is terrible and... Well, the old version was just great! "Why should I love You?" would have been a better choice...
Go for it! If you like KB, you won't be disappointed, but try it with my sequencing. Honest, it works much better!
The "ups": "Lily"(just crazy!), "This Woman's Work", "The Red Shoes" (brilliant!), "Never Be Mine"(much more atmospheric) and "Moments of Pleasure" (definitely more simple but just perfect, beautiful and poignant!).
the "not worth it": "Flower of...", "Top of the city" (which is allright but well...).
Her official website ( ) has revamped and full of new things like the wonderful artwork for this brand new album!
Well, nothing definitely official from Kate Bush yet... Lots of stupid excitement on Homeground forum (KB english message board). It seems leaked informations emanate from Del Palmer himself: 7 songs of 12 minutes (at least) each, one being called "Wild Man", and one being a duet. Don't take that for granted, as far as I'm concerned, all this still sound like gossip.... An official annoucement was supposed to be released today, nothing serious ever happened. So wait and see...
I've listened to more of her other albums lately... but i still can't really like The Sensual World or Lionheart, all others i love, esp. The Dreaming and the second halves of Never for Ever and Hounds of Love
And he used to make me pray, wearing a mask like a death's head. When he put me there in the back seat, and he said, "Jesus save me, Jesus save me."
"I've listened to more of her other albums lately... but i still can't really like The Sensual World..."
rainbowdash, your likes and dislikes are your own and u have every right to them but there is a song on Sensual world that strikes me as one of the best she has ever done. Walk Straight Down the Middle is one of the most adult themed songs of hers i have ever heard, dealing with the issues of sexual awakening and sex itself. The "self" or speaker in most of her songs is rather childlike(even Babooshka) and even here the speaker seems young enough to be newly exposed to the sexual experience, and yet this takes the subject on in a very adult way. I really enjoy the musical counterpoint to the story, i like the boundless energy projected by the music and i think her voice is really stunningly sensual. It is short and oft overlooked, but remarkable nonetheless. The 12' single also has a instrumental version of the song Sensual World in front of Walk down... which seems to highten the experience of the song even more...guess i just really like it ...maybe Pierre can articulate it better . dwain
