Sometimes I say 'HOOM time', and I'll listen to the whole thing. Sometimes I just put all the Joanna on shuffle. I play Ys a lot when I go to sleep. But not because it's boring. I just like music when I sleep.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
I rarely listen to MEM, and when I do it's only some of the songs. With Ys, I usually only listen to it on Sundays (just because I have a lot of spare time on a Sunday), and I used to listen to Emily at 12pm and the rest of the songs from 2pm onwards, but now I tend to listen to all of them together from 2pm onwards, depending on what time American Idol is on (I'm so lame). I think Ys is one of those albums that I just *have* to listen to the whole way through (same with Rufus Wainwright's latest album).
With HOOM I only listen to one disc at a time, and usually when I'm doing homework. Or sometimes I listen to Disc 3 when I'm reading magazines. But with HOOM I can only listen to it in the evenings, and I don't usually listen to Disc 2 at all apart from to learn chords or lyrics (although I used to listen to Occident on a Sunday morning after I stopped my ritual of the 12pm listen to Emily).
Basically I have a really specific schedule of when I can or can't listen to Joanna Newsom. I think this means I'm some kind of crazy fangirl... :S
joanna, as bjork as...well every time is a manic process, i will only listen to it during weeks, all day long, sometimes it's only one song, often selected songs from one album, i didn't melt the album as it's difference feelings. Ys is a special thing as i quite dislike this album, i rarely listen to s&d as i prefer live version and i prefer cosmia ys street band record. HOOM is on an other level, i apart paving company (which i erased from my computer) i listen to the whole album. MEM is a day album an HOOM a night album, i rarely put music as background, i spend hours scraching walls with headphone on my ears. I listen music as i listen movies, hum... don't want to be pedant, but as i'm a camerawoman, sometimes it's hard for me to watch movie and not analyse pic so i often only listen the movie, then if the story please me i watch it. Same with music. That's why i spend so much time in silence, especially when i've friends at home, as they disturb me to listen carefully
I just listen to whatever I feel like listening to. I'm accustomed to the order of some songs, though, and have to listen to them as a unit - this is typically the case with Milk-Eyed Mender (like, as Peach Plum Pear is ending I expect to hear Swansea, so I have to play it). I don't really listen to Ys straight through unless I pop it in on a long car trip... I don't really listen to either album too much anymore for the same reason Rosa doesn't. I don't want to overwrite the memories I have! I have never attempted to listen to HOOM straight through.
Maybe that should be another thread... Joanna song memories.
Usually for MEM or HOOM, I pick a song and then decide to just listen to the rest of the record afterwards once I realize how fucking amazing the whole thing is. Ys I generally go into realizing I'm gonna listen to all of it.
Ys is like a bag of lays. You can't have just one... So if I start with a song, I go back and I listen to all of them.
I listen to a few songs from MEM once in awhile and I usually stick to my favorites when it comes to HOOM. Of course, I used to listen to HOOM while I did the dishes at work.
This is my mood prior to going to do the dishes: This is me when I return after listening to some of HOOM:
mmmmm, i have polli's problem as well, some bit of a tune pops up in my head, and my mind keeps chewing at it until i have the whole song going. but here i experience a difference, because to excise this demon requires playing the whole song, and perhaps many others around it at loud volumes with exquisite dynamic production until the internal/infernal playing exhausts itself

The thing i like best about deciphering Joanna's songs...i'm always wrong.
I've learned to shut off all such thing--music, conversations, etc.--and I do occasionally. I don't mind the music being in there most of the time. Depends on the the song, and who is singing it. 'Tiptoe thru the Tulips' by Tiny Tim definitely has to go.
I usually listen to Ys while painting, since it's so long and involved I have to be doing something with my hands. The same is even more true for HOOM, I still really haven't been able to get fully into it so I listen to it while reading. I've found that for some reason or another it has the potential to fit well with Watchmen.
And he used to make me pray, wearing a mask like a death's head. When he put me there in the back seat, and he said, "Jesus save me, Jesus save me."
