some of my friends are fond of joanna, especially with her more subtle vocal style of late.. just posted the video on my page and the insults have started.
it makes me so sad when people say she sings like a 5 year old child. when you can consider the nuanced writing and the subject matter, especially on a song that like "on a good day" that is so deceptively simple, it is such a tired, ignorant remark.
Thanks!! Ah it's so great, "do you do your own taxidermy?" The new instrumental part is beautiful, but it makes me worry about all the other magical stuff that she's cut out from songs.
Saw this on Bev's facebook. Really lovely, great little solo too. But was it just me, or did she look pretty rough? Too much make-up and the dress was doing her no favours. Although I'm only saying that from the perspective of someone who already thinks she's stunning.
Can anyone strip the audio from the video? I want to transcribe that little instrumental bit and put it in the sheet music, but I don't know if I'll get to it before the video is removed.
Ha. I think she looks beautiful! Her skin is all dewy and she looks completely angelic. Maybe I just like too much make-up.
I love that little harp part in the middle, it's beautiful. She did amazing! It does bum me out to think of how many people listening just can't appreciate her, but oh well, I think we give her more admiration than anyone really needs.
I agree about Joanna looking beautiful...doesn't she always? But, that dress isn't the best I've seen her wear. She also seemed more nervous than usual. Letterman has a way of intimidating guests. She seemed to be pronouncing a lot of words in what could be taken as a "childish" manner, which may be what is the driving force behind some of the rude comments you see out there. I mean, she was singing them in a different way from most of the times I've heard her sing this song. I think that's part of why she seemed nervous to me. Anyway, a long time ago, in a forum far far away, we had a discussion about the way she forms or speaks some words, and that it appeared to some that she might be fighting a speech impediment. I think I remember something from one of her early interviews where she briefly said something that supported that impression. But, don't take my word for it. Look it up if you have doubts about my veracity. By the way...where's the door?
Oh, I forgot to mention that I think that little solo seemed out-of-place in the song...sort of like the obligatory guitar solos found in a lot of rock back in the 80's. Not that it wasn't pretty or well-played. It just didn't sound like part of the same song. I can't support that with my expertise in musicology...I don't have any. It just sounded like a pretty little ditty that she didn't have any other place to play.
Could be. Like I said...Letterman can be intimidating. Also, she was playing right in front of Paul Shaffer, Letterman's band leader, a man of above average musical skill and experience. That could have been intimidating too. I might forget my own name in similar circumstance. Anyway, she got through it alive, and I have a nice 1080P recording of it. Wahoo!
