I just finished a biglongsilly selfcontained reading of "Have One On Me", in response to being a bit let down with the Visions book. (Too much Market interpretation, not enough narrative).
The transcription project guy has understandably stalled recently, so any musicians who feel moved enough to tie meanings to melodies, trace out song structures and so on, please, let's see.
Your writing style is rather off-putting and using the word 'youse' doesn't exactly put you in a prime position to criticize 'Visions of Joanna Newsom'. Please troll elsewhere. Thank you.
I tried to read it...honest. Maybe it was the writing style. Maybe it was the intentional misspellings, or the nonstandard word usage. Maybe I'm just being lazy. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.
Awww I thought it was interesting, I wish more people would put up stuff like that. i liked the bits where you made comparisons directly between song lyrics (especially the reference to rain in esme and autumn). I only picked up on that sort of stuff in Easy and Does Not Suffice ("how easy I was not"), I feel like I've missed a tonne of stuff now.
I was wondering, I read a review of HOOM in a magazine a while ago (terrible review, two sentences, it was in a crappy teenage girl mag), it said that there was a song on HOOM about the Civil War (and then went on to say "and one about talking animals! fun!" but anyway). I can't figure out what song might be about the Civil War, does anyone have a clue? Or maybe they just made a mistake...
Guys you're being way too harsh, this is a really genuinely interesting piece of writing, and you get used to his style after a little bit. I only read up to the section on Easy but plan to continue later and then I guess I'll have more to say. Good job.
@ Spelunker: Thought I'd balance the inherent pretension of a 7000w article with something more familiar. Sad to learn that colloquialism and wordplay is such a crime.
@ Polliwog: My style needs the deconstruct, no doubtin here. Nonstandard is ever the aim, and I cannot apologise.
@ sophie: Hm. "Go Long" has a Vietnam reference, and "You and Me, Bess" is set in the right era, but those aside, I dunno what they were talking about.
@ Jordan: It was whimsy, not a disquote; but, I accept your callout. (:
@ Wanbli: Oh, assumed only my school system was silly enough to use the damn things.
I think the pun works; when work is as figurative as JN's, a large part of the critical work consists in tracing between gaps, working the datapoints into a coherent story.
@ claire: Ah, yeah! Next line is "in the year of AD 1", so they're 'crappy' indeed.
I wasn't asking for an apology. I was thinking openly about why I was having a hard time reading it. Another possibility that I failed to mention is that I'm simply losing interest in reading what others have to say about Joanna.
well, i read it in one sitting, and i really enjoyed it. i think it is worth reading. the colloquial writing style helps offset the length of the article and keep it entertaining -- and i think it is quite insightful and entertaining. so thanks, a technicality, for letting me see and appreciate HOOM in a whole new light!
McKay's piece was dazzling indeed (though he called her The Bard, and though I never like people leaning on the High/Low art distinction as much as he does.). Couldn't read Ys half as much as I can HOOM, so him pointing out the reprises between Emily and so on was pleasing. Always nice when something academic demands to be read again rather than abandoned.
