For the first time ever, there was one group / pair with no voter casting a vote - namely Pair 174. I regard this as different to a tie, even one of ½ point each, and have decided to treat it as a loss for both songs. Ignoring the erroneous pairing 45 in Round One A (it was replaced by 45a in Round One B), here is the summary of all songs' performances in Round One (A-D).
TABLE OF RESULTS: ROUND ONE (A-D)
Classification Method
i) One point is awarded for each pairing won, ½ point for each draw/tie, and 0 for each loss, and as there were four sets of pairings (A-D), the maximum is 4 points.
ii) I have also calculated a "merit score", as follows: in each pairing, determine what percentage of points was awarded to each song: if it was 2 votes to 0, or 1-0, this was 100% to the winning song, and 0% to the loser; 1½-½ is 75%-25%; and 1-1 or ½-½ is 50%-50%. (As already mentioned, the solitary 0-0 is treated as 0%-0%). The percentage awarded to each song in the pairing is multiplied by the points of the opponent song (as calculated by (i) above), and for every song, the total of the four such calculation gives the "merit score". The idea is to reward results more highly against better rated songs than lower ones.
Songs are ordered first by (i) Points, and then as a tie breaker, by (ii) Merit Score.
Any songs level on both criteria are awarded equal positions (but listed below in the order of their "per milles" score from previous JNSTs).

Comments
The top 28 (those above the dotted line) qualify for Round Two. This was unfortunate for Yarn And Glue, which ended with 3 points, but just lost out to the group immediately above it on the Merit Score tie break.
Joanna's very first released recording, Erin, came out on top - perhaps surprisingly, but certainly deserved, being the only song to win all four of its pairings.
Had the table been compiled using "total percentage points received in each pairing) ie the first part of the calculation in (ii) above), exactly the same 28 songs would have qualified, in almost the same order.
Had Merit Score alone been used, then the top 24 above would still have qualified, but Ca' The Yowes To The Knowes, Jackrabbits, Inflammatory Writ, and Three Little babes would have lost out. One of these places would have gone to No Style, and I would have had to find another tie-breaker to select the other three from this group of four: Instrumental 1999, Prepared Harp Improv./Untitled Harp Music, Shame [DB/V/JN+friends], and Picture [RP/JN]. This would have increased the number of collaborations that qualified from just two (The Man Who Ran The Town [HS/JN] and Another Day [RH/JN]) to four or five.
Five songs have qualified whose per milles score prior to JNST7 suggested they would not do so, namely The Man Who Ran The Town [HS/JN], Man’s Road, Same Old Man (a special case, as it's early low showings were based on a lo-fi live recording, but which has now been properly recorded on Divers), Another Day [RH/JN], and the somewhat divisive Three Little Babes. The five 'favourites' who have thus missed out were Yarn And Glue and Instrumental 1999 (just, in these two cases), This Side Of The Blue (which was half-a-dozen places down), and two that trailled in around 50th - Colleen and You Will Not Take My Heart Alive, the lowest placed of Joanna's officially released solo recordings.
The first pairings for Round Two will be posted very soon. Twelve of the exempted songs will come into the mix at this stage (a further 12 will come in at Round Three). The first group of 12 contains: A Pin-Light Bent Anecdotes Divers Easy "En Gallop" (aka En Gallop!) Good Intentions Paving Company Goose Eggs Peach, Plum, Pear Soft As Chalk Swansea Time, As A Symptom Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne
Please choose the one song that you prefer in each pairing. I intend to leave voting open for one week - so until about Thursday 9th November 2017 (ideally midnight UK time), but as experience this year has shown, I've been prone to let things slip! Depending on time and interest, we may then progress directly to Round Three, or there may be further set(s) of pairings with these 40 songs.
Pair 1 Inflammatory Writ Soft As Chalk
Pair 2 A Pin-Light Bent The Man Who Ran The Town [HS/JN]
Pair 3 Autumn Sprout And The Bean
Pair 4 Esme The Things I Say
Pair 5 Divers Another Day [RH/JN]
Pair 6 Erin Does Not Suffice (In California, Refrain)
Pair 7 Three Little Babes Good Intentions Paving Company
Pair 8 Occident On A Good Day
Pair 9 Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne Ca’ The Yowes To The Knowes
Pair 1 - Soft As Chalk Pair 2 - A Pin-Light Bent [but I did consider this one closely!] Pair 3 - Sprout And The Bean Pair 4 - Esme Pair 5 - Divers Pair 6 - Erin [it's just so idyllic sounding] Pair 7 - Three Little Babes / Good Intentions Paving Company [tie] Pair 8 - On A Good Day Pair 9 - Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne [another hard choice] Pair 10 - Time, As A Symptom Pair 11 - Easy Pair 12 - "En Gallop" (aka En Gallop!) [well, I never] Pair 13 - Anecdotes Pair 14 - Cassiopeia Pair 15 - Swansea Pair 16 - What We Have Known [a really hard choice - Bridges And Balloons holds a special place as the first Joanna song I ever heard, but What We Have Known is just so powerful - the tremble in her voice at one point is like nothing else she's ever recorded] Pair 17 - Goose Eggs Pair 18 - Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie Pair 19 - Flying A Kite Pair 20 - Ribbon Bows [but a hard choice, as The Fray is also a very underrated song, I feel]
I will not have internet access at the previously mentioned closing time for Round 2B, so instead I will aim to close voting about 24 hours EARLY. If anyone else intends to vote, please do so before a minute to midnight today (Thursday 16 Nov, UK time). Thank you, under a cpell, for your continued support.
Please choose the one song that you prefer in each pairing. Of the 16 pairs, 12 produced definitive winners, with four ties. Since interest remains limited, here's how I intend to conclude this year's JNST (and perhaps the last unless there's an upturn for 2018, or perhaps I will simply ask Milkymooners to list their favourites and compile a chart from that in future):
The 12 winning songs from Round 3A will progress to Round Four, which will be the final stage, and will each carry forward 1 bonus point. The eight tied songs will also progress: their Round 3A results will be counted as part of Round 4, earning each of them a ½ point. There are just over 5 weeks remaining until the end of 2017, which is an invariable deadline for the completion of the tournament. I will aim to post at least five sets of pairings involving these 20 songs between now and 1 minute to midnight (UK time) on 31st December. Each set will remain open for at least 4 days (96 hours), but thereafter may close at any time providing the one other person (Under A CPell) who has been interested enough to support this tournament has cast her vote. After 7 days, the set is liable to close anyway, regardless of who has or has not voted. Each set of pairings will normally consist of 10 pairings, but I may do a double set if it seems expedient. I will also review all previous pairings in JNST7 and assess whether it is feasible to include a further (small) bonus award for each song based on them. The first set of pairings will be posted here shortly.
No qualified song has lost a pairing in an earlier round in JNST7. For this purpose, three possible results are recognised: W = a win by 2-0, earning 1 'round point' [rp] w = a win by 1½-½, earning 0.9 'round points' D = a draw (tie, 1-1), earning 0.5 'round points'.
Two songs competed in Round One, which is allocated a multiplier of ⅓: '81 - achieved W3 w0 D1 => 3.5 rp Sprout And The Bean - achieved W1 w2 D1 => 3.3 rp In both cases, the maximum available rp was 4 (four pairings contested). Round One is allocated a round multiplier of 1/3.
Ten songs competed in Round Two, which is allocated a multiplier of ½: '81 - achieved W1 w1 D2 => 2.9 rp (from a maximum of 4) Since the other competing songs were only involved in one pairing each, this has been scaled down to 0.725 rp (from a maximum of 1) Anecdotes, Divers, "En Gallop" (aka En Gallop!), Goose Eggs, Soft As Chalk, Time, As A Symptom, and Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne all achieved W1 w0 D0 => 1 rp (from a maximum of 1) Sprout And The Bean and Swansea achieved W0 w1 D0 => 0.9 rp (from a maximum of 1).
All songs contested one pairing in Round Three, which is allocated a multiplier of 1: Anecdotes, Baby Birch, Cosmia, Emily, Go Long, In California, Only Skin - all achieved W1 w0 D0 = 1rp Divers, Have One On Me, Time, As A Symptom, Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne - all achieved W0 w1 D0 => 0-9 rp ’81, "En Gallop" (aka En Gallop!), Kingfisher, Sadie, Sawdust & Diamonds, Soft As Chalk, Sprout And The Bean, Swansea all achieved W0 w0 D1 => 0.5 rp
Songs not taking part in any particular round are allocated an rp score midway between the maximum available and the maximum actually achieved by a competing song (in Round One, 3.75 rp from a maximum of 4; in Round Two, 1 rp from a maximum of 1).
For each song, the number of bonus points scored is the sum, for each of the three rounds of: rp scored in that round ÷ maximum rp it could have scored in that round × multiplier for that round
These work out as:
Anecdotes — 1.8125 Baby Birch — 1.8125 Cosmia — 1.8125 Emily — 1.8125 Go Long — 1.8125 Goose Eggs — 1.8125 In California — 1.8125 Only Skin — 1.8125

In Round Four, 1 point will be awarded for each pairing won, and ½ point for each pairing that results in a tie. However, up to 0.1 bonus points may be lost if any tie is not won by the maximum possible margin - the closest possible win (1½-½ in there are two voters, 2-1 if three, 2½-1½ if four, etc) will result in the loss of a full 0.1 bonus points, and any intermediate result will result in a smaller loss of bonus points. Any bonus points lost by a winning song will be added to the song it defeated. From here on, all bonus point calculations will only be shown to two decimal places, unless more are needed to break ties.
