Greetings one and all ... of those few who are still around!
Now that we're into the second half of the year, I'd like to run another JNST on here. But my questions are ... 1. Would anyone vote? 2. Is someone already doing a better / better subscribed one somewhere else, in which case mine would be a bit superfluous?
Hello Steve! 1. I would be happy to participate. 2. There was some kind of tournament last year in the Facebook group. It was better attended but poorer organized. And I guess to see its results now, one has to scroll quite a lot.
Hi, Steve! I'd be very excited to participate in this year's JNST! With the new album and some difficult new choices I think it would be a shame to skip it this year. The facebook group's polls are fun and well-attended but not nearly as exciting and well-organised as the ones you curate.
This has been mentioned on an earlier occasion but I think, considering the level of activity on milkymoon at the present moment, that it would be an idea to advertise the tournament on the facebook group to rack up the participation just a notch. It could also potentially see some more changes in outcomes, which would be interesting. I'd be happy to do it if you're comfortable with this(:
Thank you both for your support and kind comments. With valued and long-standing members like you in favour, I will set about organising as usual then. I am toying with some form of 'Swiss System' used for chess tournaments, but that might make for just too many options so I will give it a little more thought over the next week or so, and then start posting the instructions and the pairings.
Solfatara - yes please: I would be glad if you could advertise the tournament on FaceBook, as I don't use it myself. I believe it has an age-limit and I don't fall into it
If FB members want to participate, but don't want to go through the rigmarole of registering here, I suppose it would be OK if you (or someone else ... it may be an arduous job ... but best if only one MM member in any case) were to collate the votes from there and transmit them to me via MilkyMoon, that would be a good way to open the polls up a bit and perhaps make for some interesting outcomes as you suggest. I have had a special 'incentive' for long-standing MilkyMooners who were unfamiliar with some of the more obscure songs in Joanna's portfolio, and I am happy to continue that on here - but I don't think I would be comfortable throwing it open to the whole FB community though. They'll have to do their own research!
PS - Does anyone have any information as to whether Joanna participated in either of the "ensemble' pieces at the Fleetwood Mac event, or did she only appear on the song she sang solo? Perhaps someone here (or on FB) attended the concert and could give a definitive answer.
Thank you both for your support, under a CPell and Adam. The tournament is designed so that you can dip in and out of it as you please, so although it's great if you can vote in as many rounds as possible, you can still make a valuable contribution to the outcome if you don't take part at every stage.
I'll happily participate, but my knowledge of Milk Eyed M ender and obscurities is distressingly low. More than happy to give my voting opinion on the last three records and Colleen however.
I'll participate in the later rounds, at least! I think gauging (albeit from an ever-shrinking sample) changes over time in song preference is a good Joannalogical service.
I am pleased to launch the sixth Joanna Newsom Song Tournament, our attempt to discover the song that our community loves the most (and in doing so, rank all the others, too). Before I begin, I would like to thank Solfatara – her little prompt was what I needed to finally kick this off after weeks of procrastination. And once again, my acknowledgements to Lawns of Dawns and to Jesse, who suggested the idea in the first place, back in 2011. This long post will give the basic rules, which are virtually unchanged from last time, so you are welcome to skip them and get straight down to casting your votes based on the first match-ups which will appear in my next post below. I would like to offer some assistance to regular MilkyMooners who might not be familiar with some or all of the non-canonical songs. If you’ve been a member for a while, and are interested enough in the JNST to have voted before, or at least made some postings on here in the past (or can otherwise make a good case) please send me a PM and I’ll try to help.
On that topic, does anyone have audio files of the songs performed with Philip Glass & Tim Fain that they would be prepared to send me, please? (That is: France, The Orchard, The French Lieutenant's Dreams). Also, any Joanna material that’s on the ‘director’s cut’ of Family Jams, but not on the new DVD; and of the impromptu "Happy Birthday To You" she performed at one of her concerts, I believe late in 2015 for a band member. And there are still a couple of questions that remain unanswered: I’d be grateful if anyone could advise a) Did Joanna appear on any song at the Fleetwood Mac tribute other than “Beautiful Child”. I am aware that the show opener was “Tusk”, and that a group performance of “Don’t Stop” closed the show, but have not seen any evidence that Joanna appeared on either of these songs, and so I have not included them as yet. b) Did Joanna appear on the finale to the Muppets soundtrack, “Life’s A Happy Song”. It’s listed as an entire cast performance, so I have included it in the JNST, while aware that this is perhaps inconsistent with (a) above. c) Little Picture of You: Joanna is not credited for this track on Kevin Barker's 2010 album, but did she guest on a live or unreleased version?? - I have continued to include this song in the JNST.
RULES
1. The tournament is intended to find (in a fun way) the best-loved Joanna Newsom song (whether she appears as a solo artist or as a part – no matter how small – of a collaboration, and including songs that she did not write herself). It is driven by the votes of members of this MilkyMoon site. The tournament is thus between the songs and not between the people who are involved in it as voters.
2. Each SONG that Joanna has performed is one entry. This means that songs that have been recorded more than once count as a single entrant, and voters are asked to consider their personal favourite version when casting their votes. As well as the songs on Joanna's four official albums [including ‘Divers’], her two early self-released EPs, and her handful of official singles, the tournament is also open to any song (or other scripted or lyrical piece, poem, etc) that she has ever performed, either solo or in collaboration with another artist or a group, so long as it is known to exist by the tournament organiser. (This, by default, is me, but it doesn't mean I have to have heard the song, but just that I have to know it has been performed; it can include songs only performed "live" as well as officially released songs). Where the same song is known by more than one title, it is still only entered once, and will be known by the most official title, or (if none, or more than one) by the title chosen by the organiser; all versions can however be considered by the voters. (eg: if you want to vote for En Gallop!, you can do so by selecting "En Gallop").
3. The organiser will draw the songs into a series of Groups or pairs, to be posted in this thread. MilkyMoon members are then invited to vote for their favourite song (or songs - see instructions posted at the time of the draw) in each Group, within a specified time limit. At the expiry of that time period (perhaps slightly extended, depending on when the organiser gets here to close off the round), the votes will be counted up, and the most popular song in each group will progress to the next round, whereupon the process described in paragraph 3 will be repeated. The following provisions will also apply: a) The draw will include an element of 'seeding', based on the song's performance in previous JNSTs, or in previous rounds of this JNST, to try to ensure that the most popular songs do not clash at earlier stages of the tournament. b) If voters are asked to cast more than one vote per group, these can be ordered according to instructions posted at the time of each specific draw - for example, if two songs are to be chosen, these may be allocated 2 points for a first choice, and 1 point for a second choice. If your vote is ambiguous, I'll do my best to resolve it privately, but if this proves impossible I'll have to make a sensible decision on how to treat it. c) If a voter is unable to choose between more than one song, their vote(s) will be regarded as shared equally between the songs involved, unless he or she makes it clear that they do not like any of the songs in a particular group, in which case no vote will be counted for that voter for that group. d) The organiser will endeavour to make the draws as neutral as possible, for example by scrambling the order of groups and the order in which songs are presented within each group. e) Depending on the exact number of songs entered in the initial draw, it is possible that wild-card places in a subsequent round may be allocated to the "best losers" (however defined) from the previous round, with the proviso that no song can receive two such wild-cards during the course of the same tournament. An asterisk (*) will be appended to the song’s title as a reminder that it has already received one such wild-card, and cannot do so again.
4. The final stage may follow the same pattern, or may be constituted as a series of "head to head" pairings on a round-robin basis involving 12 songs. An element in ordering the songs in the Final may be a brought forward 'bonus score' derived from voting in earlier rounds, but this will form only a minor part of the total weighting. (The final stages will decide the positions of the songs which reach that stage, and the lower positions will be determined by analysis of the results of the earlier rounds, possibly with a subsidiary vote for some of the positions).
For those that aren't interested in the mechanics - don't worry: all I invite you to do is to do is cast your votes for each group in the period stated. Please only post them in this thread, and if you change your mind (within the time limit) please do so by making a NEW post, and not by editing your initial one, as I could miss this if I've done an intermediate count and look only for later postings. The key things to remember are: Don't rush your Qualifying Round votes ... take your time to consider, seek out, and listen again to these less familiar songs: PM me if you’re a regular MilkyMooner who would like some help in doing so. ALL versions of a song count towards a single entry. For example, if you're asked to consider Cosmia, cast your vote on the basis of the version you like the best, whether it's one of the officially released versions on Ys or the Colleen EP, or one of any number of unreleased, bootlegged, unofficial, live, YouTube etc versions. Please try to vote before the deadline that I state. I won't close a round before that date / time, but as soon as the deadline has elapsed, I am liable to close it at any time. I will, however, include votes cast between the announced deadline and the actual close of the round. All times / dates referred to are based on UK time (that's BST – British Summer Time – until 30 October, and then Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which is one hour behind GMT - ie GMT-1).
Collaborations are indicated in square brackets, [...], and are abbreviated as follows: BC = Bill Callaghan (also known as Smog, qv) CD = Clive Deamer CG = Clive Greenwood DB = Devendra Banhart DG = Danny Goffey E = Espers GC = Gaz Coombes GS = Golden Shoulders HS = Hard Skin JG = Jonny Greenwood KB = Kevin Barker LI = The Lonely Island LM = Lili De La Mora M = The Muppets MB = The Moore Brothers MO = Mike O'Brien NC = Nervous Cop P = The Pleased PG = Philip Glass RF = Ryan Francesconi RH = Roy Harper RP = Robin Pecknold S = Smog (also known as Bill Callaghan, qv) SN = Stacy Nuner TF = Tim Fain TG = Thao & The Get Down Stay Down (Thao is Thao Nguyen) V = Vetiver VB = Vashti Bunyan WW = Weird War JN = Joanna Newsom, including Joanna Newsom & The Ys Street Band - not shown unless her name appears as part of the credited artists.

There are 134 songs in the above list. I have decided to structure JNST6 along these lines (although I reserve the right to 'tweak' this format, should new information / songs materialise, if interest is negligible, or if there are numerous ties):
Round One The 68 best-performing songs from previous JNSTs are exempt from this round. The remaining 66 songs (2 new, 64 lower-performing from previous JNSTs) are divided into 22 groups of three. Voting takes place to produce 22 group winners, which progress to Round Two. Three "best runner-up" also progresses, making 25 songs altogether.
Round Two Comprises 93 songs, being the 68 previously exempt songs, plus the 25 qualifiers from Round One. They are divided into 31 groups of three. Voting takes place to produce 31 group winners, which progress to Round Three. They are joined by two 'best runners-up'.
Round Three The 33 (31+2) songs progressing from Round Two are divided into 11 groups of three. Voting takes place to produce a first, second, and third place within each group.
Final Round The 11 group winners, plus the 'best runner-up' from Round Three contest the Final Round First Division. If interest is sufficient, this will be on a 'round robin' (league) basis, and will also feature a Second Division (remaining 10 runners-up, plus best two third placed songs from Round Three) and Third Division (remaining 9 third placed songs, and three further 'best runners-up' from Round Three). If interest is lukewarm, I will downscale this round, however. The 94 songs that did not appear in the Final Round will be ranked according to their performance in Rounds One, Two & Three.
Here are the 22 groups for your consideration over the next couple of weeks. Please order the songs in each group, listing your favourite first, and least favourite last. Any song not mentioned I will assume to occupy the lowest available place, and if more than one is not mentioned, I will assume them to be tied for this place. Within each group, two points will be awarded for your favourite song in each group, and one for your second placed song. Any tied songs will share the points available for the positions they occupy. At the end, you have the chance to award one bonus point to each of up to five songs from the entire list of 66 entered for this round - please just list them after Group 22. Please cast your votes by 23:59 on 15th September 2016, UK time.

Thank you for your comment, and for bringing this to my attention. I would be delighted to include the Albatross cover. Let's add it to Group 14, which now reads -
Group 14 - Good Heart, Money And Rain [MB] || Colorchains Of Inner Space [NC] || The French Lieutenant Dreams [JN,TF] || Albatross
To make it easier to refer back, I will amend the list of Entrants on the Draw as posted above, to include this song. While I was about it, I also re-instated "The" to the piece "The Hawk Feeds You To Feed Itself" which I omitted in error.

Did we already know this: ? I'm having a hard time distinguishing whether it's really harp and piano I'm hearing or just piano, but I guess if the person who posted this says it's Tim Fain, Philip Glass and Joanna, then it's probably true...
Wow - thank you for finding this one, Under a CPell!
As the comment under the YouTube said, I too had never expected to hear anything from this show. The Orchard is one of the pieces that were reported as including Joanna (and I certainly believe I can hear her harp on this excellent recording), so the piece is included in the original list of entrants above, and in group 13 in the original draw. I just didn't expect anyone to vote for it, as it seemed that only those who were at the show might ever have heard it.
Now all we need is for someone to post recordings of France and The French Lieutenant Dreams from the same show, and we're almost there! (I note that there are now at least two different recordings of her performing Happy Birthday on YouTube.
Here are my votes for Round 1 - if anyone else intends to cast a vote, please do so within the next 22 hours or so!
I found groups 11 & 21 the hardest to decide - they both came close to being 3-way ties. I also nearly had the 1st & 2nd positions the other way round from my final choice (as below) for groups 3, 9 & 10.
Group 1 1st Shame [DB,JN,V…] 2nd One Horse [P] 3rd 7 Minutes In Heaven [MO,JN] Group 2 1 He Needs Me 2 Orange Peter [P] 3 Nonrum Nonproblem [NC] Group 3 1 Swift Nude [P] 2 Sympathy [GS] 3 Ras Trent [LI] Group 4 1 The Honey, The Power, The Light [GS] 2 I'm Already Gone / Already Gone [P] 3 France [PG,JN,TF] Group 5 1 River Guard [BC] 2 About Me [P] 3 Ill Pearls [NC] Group 6 1 Same Old Man 2 The Conversation [P] 3 Mountain & Bear [KB] Group 7 1 Exit / Orderly Manor [P] 2 Happy Birthday To You 3 Pow Strikes Pow Implosion [NC] Group 8 1 Amour Fou [V,JN,AC,DB] 2 Let Go [P] 3 The Muppet Show Theme [M] Group 9 1 Mountain [GS] 2 Never Come Home [P] 3 Dreams [DB,JN,V] Group 10 1 Lifetime [RF,LM] 2 Don't Make Things [P] 3 Little Picture Of You [KB] Group 11 1 This Is Just To Say 2 If You Can Afford It [P] 3 Through The Trees [RF,LM] Group 12 1 Bring Me Down [GS] 2 Intermission / I The Province [P] 3 Franks Vs Frank [NC] Group 13 1 No Style [P] 2 The Orchard [PG,JN,TF] 3 Roots [DB,JN,V] Group 14 1 Albatross 3 Colorchains Of Inner Space [NC] 3 Good Heart, Money And Rain [MB] 4 The French Lieutenant's Dreams [JN,TF] Group 15 1 We Are The Doctor [P] 2 The Wheel [BC] 3 Setting the Bushes On Fire [NC] Group 16 1 Picture [RP,JN] 2 Oh Canada [P] 3 We Are A Crowd [LI] Group 17 1 Under The Paving Stones, The Beach! As I was, sadly, the only voter, my choices in the post above also constitute the results for this round, so I won't list them all over again!
My 22 first-choices progress to the next round, along with three of my bonus-point choices, namely Sympathy (GS], Eleven Continents [RF,LM], and I'm Already Gone / Already Gone [P]. (My other two songs receiving bonus points were already group winners, and so qualified anyway).
ROUND TWO
There are 31 groups, each with three songs. Within each group, please rank the songs in the order you favour them (list your favourite first). Your first choice will receive 6 points, and your second choice will receive 2 points (any ties will share the available points for those positions). At the end, you have the opportunity to nominate up to FOUR songs which will each receive one bonus point.
The thirty-one group winners, and two best runners-up (excluding any which are carrying forward an asterisk as best runner-up from the previous round) progress to Round 3.
Please cast your votes by one minute to midnight (UK time - British Summer Time) on Friday 30th September 2016.
If solfatara (or any other user of the Facebook page) could spread the word there, I would be most grateful. It may also be possible to do some kind of 'vote harvesting' from there, so that facebook users don't have to register here - but if someone who is a member here and there could PM me, we can discuss how this might work.

Wow! I didn't expect to see this. I'm glad to see that you are going ahead with the Song Tournament Steve. It's nice to keep it going and see how our collective tastes evolve over time. I'm sorry I missed the first round. I haven't been coming here often due to the low traffic and because I've been so busy with work. I hope someone in the fb group will let people know about this.
