So, we're all pretty huge Newsom fans here. We all love bucketloads of her music, and probably all of her albums. But is there one song which just takes the edge for you?
For me to answer this I'd have to give a few honourable mentions:
Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie for its beautiful simplicity and being the first song that really drew me to Joanna.
Only Skin for its sprawling mass of rhetoric and stunning imagery.
Kingfisher because I think it's the most poetically stunning song I've ever heard in terms of lyrics.
Go Long because it is deep, dark, introspective, and was an absolute joy to unravel and listen to again and again.
...
but I have to say, the purest, most perfect Joanna song for me is Cosmia. Never mind which version, for me they both have merits.
Cosmia is a pure expression of grief and loss which I haven't been able to find (believe me, I've tried) in any other piece of art. Its emotional intensity is its power, and every line is a gem. From the line which 4 years on remains my favourite line in anything ever (now in the quiet hour, when I am sleeping / I cannot keep the night from coming in) to beautifully simple and devastating feeling (I will sleep through the rest of my days) to a poetic image of the transcendental beauty of the process of death (water were your limbs and the fire was your hair / then the moonlight caught your eye and you rose through the air), there's no song quite like it.
I'm aware I might just be writing this and making Cosmia my favourite because of my present circumstances, but that's not important.
So if you have a spare minute, let us read why there's one song that just tops all the rest for you.
5) only skin - do i need to get into it? im sure it will make most peoples list... epic as fuck, thats all there is to it. skip to any part of the song, and its like you jumped straight to the most intense part. seriously. its ridiculously good... i just wore it out, along with the rest of Y's haha too bad for me i guess
4) ca the yowes to the knowes - this song is haunting. its sooooo good, i was really happy when i found it the first time haha. so great. i mean, i feel guilty putting it ahead of all the MEM songs and the other jewels from Ys, but... this gets numba four
3) have one on me - listen to the sydney version and you understand. lol honestly though, this song being so close to the top can be answered with a simple copy, paste, and quotations: "I remember everything Down to the sound of you shaving The scrape of your razor The dully-abrading black hair That remained When you clutched at me That night I came upstairs, half-dead And, in your kindness you put me straightaway In the cupboard with a bottle of champagne And then, later on a train It was dark out, I was half-dead I saw a star fall into the sky Like a chunk of thrown coal As if god himself spat like a cornered rat I really want you to do this for me Will you have one on me It was dark, I was drunk and half-dead And we slept, knocking heads Sitting up in the star-smoking air Knocking heads like buoys Don't you worry for me Will you have one on me Meanwhile, I will raise my own glass To how you made me fast and expendable And I will drink to your excellent health And your cruelty Will you have one on me Helpless as a child When you held me in your arms And I knew that no other could ever love me DUDUDUDDUUDDUUUUUUuuu From the courtyard, I floated in And then I watched it go down Heard the cup drop Thought, "Well, that's why they keep them around" The blackguard sat hard Down with no head on him now And I felt so bad ‘Cause I didn't know how to feel bad enough To make him proud Well daddy longlegs, are you proud?"
2) on a good day - this song fucking rules. like... its sooooo good, and so short and lovely, i just LOVE that she wrote it, i love everything about it, the lyrics, the insanely depressing emotional aspect, the super upbeat sound of it (if you dont know the vocals), and the fact that she made her point with such a short song. doesnt need to be 20 minutes long to feel like a punch to the gut. this one does it in under 2 minutes.
and i struggled whether this last was number 1 or 2, cuz on a good day is so damn good, buttttttttt taking the top spot ISSS!!
1) kingfisher - this song made me stop making music for a few months. it's that good. it is beyond anything else i've ever heard. ESPECIALLY the live version from the radio show she did. i listen to that allllllll the time, so good. just how she sings everything is so yummy... but even on the album version, its just incredible, and the song is so strong, i'm really jealous.
For me it is close- I think what it comes down to are my overall experiences in seeing these songs live balanced with the recorded versions.
Monkey and the Bear and Only Skin are tied for 2nd place.
Monkey & Bear transports me to another time period and sweeps me along before I have a chance to breath. I love it.
This Side of the Blue is "the one" for me
Whenever Joanna steps into this song, everything slows down for me- no matter where I am or what I am doing. I feel as if everything is moving in "Matrix" time and the air becomes heavy like water.
It's hard for me to separate any of the songs from Ys, though I was tempted at first to say Sawdust & Diamonds since seeing her play that live was what made me really fall in love with her; and I think that it's still a little too soon to pick something from HOOM, so I'm going to go with Swansea.
It's too late to be grateful It's too late to be late again It's too late to be hateful
Cosmia for me... It was the first Joanna song I ever heard and it made me love her music. I agree wholeheartedly with all of Tom's comments about it! It's heartbreakingly beautiful and the passion with which she sings it is absolutely stunning.
"Never get so attached to a poem, you forget truth that lacks lyricism"
never translate the lyrics so i have ano idea what it deals with but i have my oldest joanna souvenir with this song, it reminds me pleasant lonely time in belgium, i was young, i lived in my fav country, it was summer and i spend days an days listen to it in the big park near my house. i could cry of joy when i let the souvenir embraces my mind. and it's the ones i prefered to play (easily?) on piano and harp.
but sawdust and diamonds got definitely all my vote, probably some of HOOM will got the first place but i have to endurance few years with a song to definite it as my fav s&d, the intro, the björkish voice (doesn't hear yet), the lyrics...all my heart is turn into it... especially live version, ys version is less powerfull
I can't choose. Oddly it's not Cosmia, beautiful though it is.
Before Ys, Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie blew me away.
'Your skin is something that I stir into my tea. I am watching you, and you are starry starry starry.'
I think if I could never listen to any other song apart from the one I chose, it would be Only Skin. Honourable mentions also go to Kingfisher, Swansea and Emily. I love Emily. Even if the physics is wrong.
I find it hard to choose (as I'm sure we all do) but I would like to join all who sing the praises of Cosmia.
I am not sure of the exact reason but I've never been more moved by music as i have been at the 'Can you hear me?...' part.
When asked about my favourite lyrics I always think of that part but I would never quote it. I guess its a mix of the overall atmosphere of the song with the beautiful lyrics and the way she sings it, the lyrics alone wouldn't convey it.
1) Clam, Crab...just no way to beat down these lyrics 2)Swansea....ditto...paw at the wild wild night, that voice! 3) Esame-pre node problems, that S American vid still gives me shivers 4)Only Skin 5)On A Good Day 6)Inflamitory Writ 7)Cosmia

The thing i like best about deciphering Joanna's songs...i'm always wrong.
Hum... Monkey & Bear holds special significance for me, since it inspired me to come out and it's the first song I cried to and it's the first of Joanna's songs that I really loved upon hearing. Only Skin is just brilliant in every respect, of course, and enough said about that. In California is the same - HOOM's Only Skin. Have One On Me itself is great, too - it has that mad energy, it so perfectly mirrors the drunken chaos it describes in that section from, "Helpless as a child when you held me in your arms" etc. Good Intentions Paving Company is underrated, I think. It sucks you in.
I'm right here! I'm just not posting much because... well, I suppose because I don't have much to post about. I'm not really interested in arguing about the music, there doesn't seem to be much discussion of the lyrics or anything of the sort, and my life's on hiatus while I wait for my exam results and then university or a year of further hiatus. So I'm still kicking around, just don't got much to say.
