I thought I'd begin a thread specifically for films. I know we've got a topic on what the tadpoles are watching, but sometimes a specific thread inspires a more specific discussion.
To kick this off, I've just written an article on my favourite ever film comedies. I wouldn't want to clutter the forum and paste in here, but if you do want to take a look, you can read it on my blog, which can be viewed They come complete with clips of my favourite scenes if you want to skip the blurb.
It'd be great to get your feedback as a community of esteemed music lovers.
So: films. A rather broad subject I fear, so I shall ask one question:
What's your most personal film? You know, the one that really spoke to you or changed your outlook.
I think one of most wonderful films I've ever seen is "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", that film managed to reach that place deep inside of me where no other film ever got, and Nicholson's acting is simply astonishing.
Other favs are "The Shining" (another epic Nicholson's performance), "2001 a Space Odissey" and "Amelie".
Talking about comedies I like Monty Python's movies very much, early Woody Allen such as "Take the Money and Run", "Bananas" etc. and Mel Brook's "Young Frankenstein".
Also, I adore all of Hayao Myiazaki's works, "Princess Mononoke" sits right next to "the Cuckoo's Nest" for me.
Ditto Princess Mononoke and the rest of Hayao Miyazaki's work.
Sunset Boulevard might be my favourite film. It was just so beautifully directed, I thought. I never knew a film could be like that. Some scenes are so emotionally powerful; even though I'd seen it a hundred times before on "100 Best Movies" countdowns and stuff, I was breathless for the whole duration of the, "All right, Mr Demille, I'm ready for my close-up" scene.
Also love the Python films. The Last Samurai, too. Other film noir - The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon, Strangers on a Train, The Third Man, Touch of Evil... Amélie's also a favourite.
I'll give suggestions, because I don't think I can pick just one film.
If you liked Amélie, you'll like Micmacs, also by Jeunet. It's a very whimsical film, moreso than the former. Chomet's L'illusioniste and Les Triplettes de Belleville are good too.
Anything by Tarsem Singh is usually great (although he's only made three), except for the most recent. Immortals got too... commercial. But The Fall was exquisite, I daresay visually decadent. The Cell was also great, even with J.Lo.
Cheers

I'm really not into films much so my mentions aren't going to be very profound or interesting probably.
One film which I simply cannot watch because I fall apart when I even think about it is Eternal Sunshine of the the Spotless Mind. I imagine most people find this movie sad, but I don't know if it kills anyone else the way it does me. I imagine the ephemerality of life is something that is frightening/heartbreaking to a lot of people, but I feel like its the one thing that, when really focused on, can ruin me.
That scene where Joel is remembering he and Clementine under the covers, and she's telling him about her doll, and then the memory starts to fade and he starts begging, "No, let me keep this one. Let me keep just this one." It makes me hurt so deeply. I just think about every single simple little moment in life that I want to wrap up and keep but I can't.
I also really like The Science of Sleep, though I don't fully understand a lot of it. It's the most realistic depiction of dreams I've ever seen.
And lastly, Heavenly Creatures, though disturbing ... I feel that it so perfectly captures that feeling of being so totally enamored and devoted to another. So wrapped up in another person that you'll do literally anything to keep it.
I really don't watch films, hardly ever. My attention span has disintegrated to TV-length episodes only.
I think Eternal Sunshine is such a fantastic film; it's got everything I want in a movie; it's genuinely very touching, it deals with some fascinating concepts, and it's all pulled off with a lot of style and grace. I'd happily watch it again soon. I guess I don't find the idea scary because I find it so intellectually stimulating it gives me other things for my brain to be getting on with.
Dogtooth is a brilliant film. Probably the best I've seen recently. I really like non-conventional yet non-pretentious films, it's always good to watch something and not be thinking "Oh, I know how this ends" or "I'm sure I've seen that character before!." A favourite director of mine is Lars von Trier.
I must rewatch The Piano - I saw it many years ago and can hardly remember it. Heavenly Creatures is fantastic. I haven't yet seem Amelie, another movie to add to the growing list. I like films that are viscerally (most overused word ever in describing cinema, no?) disturbing and subtly shock, but I find it more troubling when the plot moves on without much reaction from the characters. Sleeping Beauty and Dogtooth are examples of this type of film.
Bad films I've seen recently are Black Swan (full of Natalie Portman writhing around in her bed and in her bathtub with little story at all) and We Bought A Zoo (hardly fair to call it bad as it's not as if it has claimed to be anything it's not, but this is the only other example I can think of presently).
My favourite film at the mo is There Will be Blood by Paul T Anderson. The best filmaker in the world at the moment in my opinion. It's unlike anything he's done before (although I would recommend any of his films such as Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love etc...). No one I know likes films that take a bit of effort, they're all pretty much into big hollywood actions...like most ppl I guess. So if anyone has seen it or does see it let me know what you think.
p.s Contrary to the title, there is very little blood in the film, still not sure why he called it that.
Just saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo at the cinema the other day, was pretty good too.
