Just finished Huxley's Brave New World, which was predictably fantastic. Now to start reading in French. I'm thinking of starting with Camus, as I loved La Peste and Les Justes and the language isn't too difficult. L'etranger is probably a good place to start. Maybe Sartre after that, I've heard Les Mains Salles is great. I'd like to read Zola but he sounds a little heavy on the language front. Any great French books (that aren't too hard to understand) anyone can recommend?
I've nearly finished reading my first French book, though it's at a bit of a lower level than the kind of things you're asking talking about: Le cadavre dans la bibliotheque by Agatha Christie... (A French translation of course, but my friend recommended it as something easy to get started on.) I'd like to read Camus once I have the proficiency though.
Just started Camus' La Chute, really enjoying it. (I read James Joyce's The Dubliners in the interim which was great). I recommend Camus really highly, because as well as being brilliant he writes in quite simple French. As long as you read like a vague plot outline before starting one of his novels you shouldn't find it too hard.
Okay thanks, I'll definitely look into that then. I'm going on a school trip to Paris in February so hopefully I'll be able to pick up a few books there -- my usual haunts in the UK are second-hand book shops, and you're hard pressed to find many non-English books in those. I read Dubliners this summer; I didn't like it greatly but I think that was because I spent too much time flicking to the back of the book to read all of the footnotes rather than just concentrating on the story. I have also read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
Vladimir Nabokov: King, Queen, Knave (The second version) The story is a basic one, and the characters are not very interesting, but it's entertaining to follow how Nabokov plays with the characters.
I've been reading the Ice and Fire series by George R R Martin. I'm currently on the 3rd Book, A Storm of Swords, having already read the first two, A Game of Thrones, and A Clash of Kings.
My friend's long Running comic series, The Horrid Adventures of Jeff and Ted. A fanfic comic that ships Jeffrey Dahmer x Ted Bundy. With guest appearances by Gacy, Chikatilo, Ramirez, Nilsem and more!
Very funny. Ted refuses to accept his sexuality.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
I did read Beowulf some while ago, and actually quite enjoyed it (I would love to be able to understand it in the original, but this was only the Penquin Classics translation, not even the Heaney version ... ). I had been reading some of the Icelandic sagas and so was accustomed to the style somewhat.
I also once read The Rachel Papers (but rather furtively!)
If you've read and enjoyed Pale Fire, I highly recommend this book about it. It's mind-blowing how much of the novel I missed, even after two readings. It's deeper than it first appears.

I feel like a square for reading a ship fanfic when the rest of you are reading literature. But also, I am reading The Adventures of Langdon St Ives, by James Blaylock. For the second time.

I'm torn between books at the mo. I have a bit of a duty to read a book called the other hand by Chris cleave. It's not a bad book its just some parts are a little annoying. This is the last time I fain interest in what others are reading.
But what I really want to be reading is his dark materials, I've read like 2 chapters and already I'm hooked.
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
