An early lead was all the Winnipeg Goldeyes pitching staff needed for Winnipegs first win of the 2014 season. On the back of an early 3-0 lead and a shutdown pitching effort, the Goldeyes (1-1) beat the Amarillo Sox (1-1) 5-2 Friday night before 2,120 fans at a gusty Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium in Texas. With two out in the top of the first inning, Goldeyes left fielder Ray Sadler hit a solo home run to left field. It was Winnipegs first home run of the season and put the road team up 1-0. Winnipeg added to its lead in the third inning. Designated hitter Ryan Pineda led off the inning with a triple and was quickly singled home a batter later by catcher Luis Alen. After shortstop Tyler Kuhn hit into a double play, second baseman Jake Blackwood hit a solo home run to extend Winnipegs lead to 3-0. Goldeyes starting pitcher Jason Jarvis was stellar in his first start of the season, throwing just 58 pitches in six innings of work. "You have to go out there and get strike one," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said on the Jewel 101 post-game show. "Jarvis did a heck of a job doing that tonight." Jarvis only blemish came in the bottom of the sixth inning when he surrendered three consecutive one-out singles and a sac fly, which led to two Amarillo runs. Down to a one-run lead, the Goldeyes restored the three-run lead in the top of the eighth inning. Kuhn singled and Blackwood walked to start the inning. Then a deep fly ball from Sadler moved them to second and third base. After centre fielder Reggie Abercrombie was intentionally walked, Kuhn scored on a wild pitch and third baseman Josh Mazzola scored Blackwood on a sac fly. "There was a three-inning stretch there where we didnt put together too many good ABs, but we beared down in the eighth inning and mustered those two runs, which were big for us," Vermilyea said. From there, Goldeyes relievers Chris Kissock, Brendan Lafferty and Kyle Bellamy – in windy conditions in the bottom of the ninth inning – wiped out any hopes Amarillo had of staging a comeback. Jarvis posted his fourth quality start in five starts as a member of the Goldeyes dating back to last season and earned the win, while Bellamy picked up his first save in a Goldeyes uniform. Amarillo starter Derek Blacksher also turned in a quality start, but he suffered his first loss of the season.Kuhn, Blackwood and Sadler led Winnipeg with a pair of hits each, as the Goldeyes outhit Amarillo 9-7. Defensively, Winnipeg didnt commit an error after making four on the rugged playing surface at ANB Sox Stadium last night. The Goldeyes and Sox meet again Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Goldeyes are expected to start righty Matt Jackson, who will be activated from the inactive list. Hell face southpaw Dayne Quist. . With timely hitting and good pitching, the Marlins are one win away from sweeping the slumping Houston Astros. . JOHNS, N. http://www.footballtexansgearsshop.com/. To be fair, the celebrations are already anything but tame. Nerf ball tricks shots are just the tip of the iceberg for a group that has performed in zero gravity, faced pro-skateboarder Rob Dyrdek and an assembled team on the MTV series "Fantasy Factory", and even hit a basketball trick shot from a passing blimp. . -- Matt Rupert scored once in regulation and again in the shootout as the London Knights extended their win streak to nine games by defeating the Owen Sound Attack 4-3 on Friday in Ontario Hockey League action. . Erik Cole scored on a breakaway with 4:49 to play, and the Stars rallied to defeat the Minnesota Wild 4-3 on Saturday night. PITTSBURGH -- Since Jerome Bettis retired after the 2005 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers have searched for a big, bruising running back in his mould. The list of hopefuls has been long, if not particularly distinguished. Verron Haynes, Najee Davenport, Carey Davis, Gary Russell, Frank Summers, Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman all failed to consistently provide production in short-yardage and goal line situations. Enter LeGarrette Blount. The 6-foot, 250-pound veteran certainly looks the part. And while he has a long way to go to be mentioned with the likes of Bettis, there have been plenty of flashes during his four seasons in the league. Blount averaged 5.0 yards per carry while splitting time with Stevan Ridley in New England last season, and gashed the Indianapolis Colts for 166 yards and four touchdowns in the playoffs. Though second-year back LeVeon Bell remains the starter, Blount is confident he can make an impact no matter what situation. "I know they brought me in here to run the football, so I hope there are plenty of carries to go around," Blount said Wednesday. "I know that LeVeon is going to get his fair share, so I hope theres enough for all of us." Bell, last years second-round pick, missed the opening three games while recovering from a preseason foot injury. But he still played nearly 700 snaps, a heavy workload the 6-foot-1, 230-pound Bell managed with ease. Still, the Steelers will find opportunities to go from the patient and pragmatic Bell to the bruising Blount, with the emphasis on bruising. "Thats my running style," Blount said. "Thats how I run the football, and I feel like (Bell) is also a big, tough running back, too. So, thats just how this team is built, with a physical running game, and I think thats what theyre trying to get back to. So, hopefully, we can do that." Blount noted a balannced offence is needed to make a run to the Super Bowl such as the ones by Seattle and Denver last year.dddddddddddd The champion Seahawks had Marshawn Lynch running the ball and Russell Wilson throwing it, while the Broncos ran the ball with Knowshon Moreno when Peyton Manning wasnt breaking NFL passing records. "I think its huge for us to (sign Blount), because Ive always said that we need to be a balanced offence," quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. "So, we need to run the ball. We need to be great at running the ball, and weve got guys that want to be great at running the ball. So, hopefully, we can do it and do it successfully." Blount added that while his body type and size make him an ideal power back, he has a variety of skill sets, such as catching the football and running away from defenders in the open field. But he certainly has proven he can run over them as well. Those attributes, combined with Bells slashing style, should give the Steelers a solid one-two punch. "I think we have a really good mix of running backs," Blount said. "(But) Ive seen the NFL Network, and they have these top 10 or top five running back duos in the NFL. I noticed that were not one of them, and I dont like it. In all honesty, I believe theyre downgrading the skill level that we have in our backfield. . I think thats kind of disrespectful." Does that mean Blount and Bell have something to prove? "Were not going to go out here and go on about how were not in that group," Blount said. "But were going to go out there and show that we belong there with our performance." NOTES: RB Dri Archer has missed the opening two OTAs, just like linebacker Jordan Zumwalt from UCLA, because his school is on the quarters system and their class has not yet graduated. . OTAs continue Thursday and also run Tuesday through Thursday next week. ' ' '
