BOSTON -- When Yoenis Cespedes drove the ball to deep centre field, Jemile Weeks started clapping even before he trotted home from third with the winning run. Hits with runners in scoring position are becoming routine for Bostons new slugger. Cespedes had four hits, including the game-winning single that capped a three-run 10th inning, and the Red Sox rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-8 on Friday night. "Hes proven to us time and time again in RBI situations, hes got a knack for it," Boston manager John Farrell said. "Hes aggressive, hes strong and hes got all-field coverage." Since coming over from Oakland at the July 31 trade deadline in a deal for lefty ace Jon Lester, Cespedes has 26 RBIs in 32 games and a .421 batting average with runners in scoring position. With the bases loaded, hes 6 for 9 with 12 RBIs for the Red Sox. "Kind of like (David) Ortiz," Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts said. "I dont know if they share tips with each other, but when he sees guys on base he just drives them in." Toronto, which lost outfielder Melky Cabrera to a season-ending pinkie injury, took an 8-6 lead in the top of the 10th. The first run scored on Dioner Navarros infield single that followed a single by Edwin Encarnacion and a double by John Mayberry Jr. Danny Valencia then hit a deep fly to right fielder Allen Craig, who caught what he thought was the third out. By the time he realized it wasnt, Mayberry was on his way to scoring all the way from second on Valencias unusual sacrifice fly. "You score those two runs in the top of the 10th there, so youre feeling really good and then bam, bam, bam, bam," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "Nine times out of 10 we win that game." In the bottom of the inning, Boston loaded the bases with none out against Casey Janssen (3-3) on singles by Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts, and a bunt single by Christian Vazquez. Will Middlebrooks singled in Betts, and Boston tied it on Dustin Pedroias sacrifice fly. Ortiz hit a soft grounder to second baseman Steve Tolleson, but his toss to second hit Middlebrooks for an error that left the bases loaded. Cespedes then connected and Weeks, who ran for Vazquez, scored easily. "I felt great," Janssen said. "I truly believed I was going to get out of it." Tommy Layne (2-1) got the win. "If you look at the last three innings, it was a wild stretch of the game," Farrell said. "More importantly is how we continued to respond." Bostons first three-run comeback tied it 6-all in the eighth after Jose Bautista and Encarnacion each reached the 30-homer mark with a two-run shot. Bautistas made it 4-3 in the sixth, and Encarnacions gave Toronto a 6-3 lead in the eighth. TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Cabrera will undergo season-ending surgery next week for a broken right pinkie. He left in the sixth inning for X-rays. He appeared to injure his finger in the third when he dove back into first base while being picked off. "I wanted to finish strong and help the team get to the playoffs," he said. Red Sox: Pedroia returned to his usual No. 2 spot in the lineup after missing five games with a concussion. ... 3B Brock Holt was replaced in the top of the 10th by Middlebrooks after feeling dizzy. UP NEXT J.A. Happ (9-8) pitches for Toronto against Boston RHP Clay Buchholz (6-8) in the second game of the three-game series Saturday night. They faced each other in Toronto on Aug. 25, when Buchholz went 8 1-3 innings and Boston won 4-3 in 10 after allowing the Blue Jays to tie with three runs in the ninth. Buchholzs 10 career wins against Toronto are his most against any opponent. YOUNG BATS Red Sox rookies Betts, Bogaerts and Vazquez were 7 for 13 with four RBIs from the last three spots in the order. "We got three young guys to start something going and Im glad all of us got something done so the other guys could drive us in," Bogaerts said. LOSING LEADS Toronto led 2-0 on Adam Linds two-run single in the first and then fell behind 3-2 as Boston scored a run in each of the first three innings. Then came Bostons two three-run rallies late in the game. "We didnt give up," Bogaerts said. . Johnson shared an update after his surgery Tuesday on Twitter. He also wrote, "now lets get on the grind." The running back told The Tennessean he was having surgery in Pensacola, Fla. . Quarterback Drew Willy appeared to injure his throwing hand on the third last play of practice Thursday. http://www.laramsfansshop.com/c-64-rams ... ersey.aspx. Locke overcame a shaky start to pitch seven innings and Josh Harrison had three hits to extend his hot streak as the Pirates beat the Miami Marlins 7-3 on Wednesday night. . And while taking highly-touted Simon Fraser offensive lineman Matthias Goossen second overall on Tuesday night will definitely help in an area of need for the club, it was a swap of draft picks that may prove to be his most shrewd move. "When Jesse Briggs started to fall a little bit, you could just see Kyle perk up in his chair. . Steve has built a solid reputation throughout the years - first as a hockey player, then as an NHL general manager and now as a scout.NEW YORK, N.Y. - The union representing NFL on-field officials criticized the league Thursday for inconsistencies in grading calls, including two high-profile penalties from recent games. In a release, the NFL Referees Association says the NFL has caused confusion for NFL officials as to what the league does and doesnt want called. The union referred to penalties on Washingtons Chris Baker for a hit on Eagles quarterback Nick Foles on Sept. 21, and to Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah last Monday night for going to his knees to celebrate an interception return for a touchdown. Abdullah actually had gone to his knees to pray a€” an act exempted from celebration penalties. The union says both calls were graded as correct even after NFL executives announced that they were incorrect. Baker got a 15-yard penalty and was ejected from the game at Philadelphia. Abdullah also received a 15-yard penalty.Consistency in penalty enforcement is extremely important to the players, coaches and fans. Uncertainty as to what the league wants called is not a road you want to go down, said Jim Quirk, executive director of the NFLRA.Quirk noted that Baker was penalized for a blindside block on Foles as a personal foul; a brawl followed near the Washington sideline and Eagles tackle Jason Peters was also ejected. Two days later, Troy Vincent, the NFLs executive vice-president of football operations, said the hit was legal and should not have been penalized. Yet, the NFLRA said, the leagues officiating department a day later graded the call as correct. In the case of the block on Nick Foles, by rule, it was not a foul because the quarterback was pursuing the play, the contact was not to the head or neck area, and the play was not over, NFL spokesman Michael Signora said in an email to The Associated Press. Howeever, the referee a€” watching the play at full speed and without the benefit of a replay review a€” judged that the block was late and threw a flag.dddddddddddd While not a correct call, we understand why it was made.In the case of Abdullah, a devout Muslim who took off a year from football to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca, the league said Tuesday that the penalty was in error. The leagues rule book prohibits players from celebrating while on the ground, but spokesman Michael Signora wrote in an email Tuesday that the officiating mechanic in this situation is not to flag a player who goes to the ground as part of religious expression, and as a result, there should have been no penalty on the play. But, according to the union, officials who made the call were given correct grades by the officiating department on Thursday. That could be because Abdullah could have been penalized for sliding on his knees before actually praying. But the league reiterated Thursday what it announced earlier this week, that the call was incorrect and not graded otherwise. As part of evaluating the performance of our game officials, the officiating supervisors recognize that for an incorrect call on a close judgment play, the official may have used appropriate reasoning, Signora said. On such a call, the official is not downgraded.Regardless, said former NFLRA President Scott Green, a recently retired referee, theres a communications problem between the NFL and its game officials. It seems there is a disconnect between what the officiating department expects from officials and the public statements being made by league executives, Green said. It certainly creates uncertainty for the guys making split-second decisions on the field.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
