TORONTO - Toronto Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle met the media Monday afternoon with a piece of paper recording the laundry list of injuries the team is currently saddled with. The good news is forward David Clarkson, who suffered a fractured orbital bone under his right eye, should be ready for Game 1 of the regular season Oct 8. It does not need surgery so we expect him to practice with our hockey club and be a possibility for Friday, said Carlyle. Clarkson, who was injured in a fight with Sabres tough guy Cody McCormick during the third period of the Leafs 6-4 win over Buffalo on Friday, says he has no intention of shying away from fighting when needed. Im not going to change my game because of something like that, it was the first time its happened to me, he said. I was hitting that reset button getting ready and Im still getting ready. Im getting ready to start, but those are those fluky things. Im not going to change the way I play because of it, its just one of those things that happen. Clarkson is in the process of figuring out appropriate facial protection, likely a visor or full cage, for when he returns to the ice. The news isnt as good for David Booth. The winger suffered a fractured foot after blocking a shot during the first period of Sundays 3-2 shootout win over the Sabres. Despite playing another six minutes in the second period, Booth is expected to miss at least four weeks. Cody Fransons situation is still uncertain at the moment. The Leafs defenceman was pushed from behind into the end boards by Torrey Mitchell during the third period of Sundays game and needed help off the ice while putting no weight on his left leg. Carlyle says Franson suffered a bruised left knee, but that he still needs further assessment. Franson was scheduled to meet with doctors Monday. I dont know if its above his knee or below his knee or right into the knee, said Carlyle. His knee went underneath him and he banged into the boards. Were still trying to wait for the swelling to come down. Well have to wait till they get a proper assessment. They feel theres no broken bones in there. Franson didnt travel with the team to Detroit, where the Leafs play the Red Wings in pre-season action Monday night. The club also announced that camp invite Henrik Tallinder has been let go from his professional tryout. The defenceman, who suffered a dislocated shoulder in Buffalo, requested a release from his contract so he could seek alternative treatment. Carlyle said the team would be responsible for the defencemans rehabilitation regardless of where it takes place. Toronto also cut its camp roster by five additional players. Forwards Petri Kontiola and Sam Carrick and defenceman Petter Granberg have been assigned to the American Hockey Leagues Toronto Marlies. Goaltender Antoine Bibeau has also been assigned to the AHL club, meaning the Leafs will once again start the season with Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer. Toronto also placed forward Troy Bodie on waivers with the hopes of assigning him to the Marlies should he clear. Toronto currently has 29 players on its roster, which needs to be reduced to 23 by 5 p.m. eastern time on Oct. 7. Booth will likely start the season on injured reserve and could be joined by Franson depending on the severity of his injury. . Keenum will make his first appearance in a regular-season game against the rugged defence of the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, where the fans just set a Guinness record as the noisiest outdoor stadium in the world. . The 28-year-old lefty made his MLB debut in 2013, making 10 starts and going 2-5 with 4.05 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Albers was named the Twins organizations minor league pitcher of the year for 2013. http://www.officialduckshockeyauthentic ... er-jersey/. Costa Rica followed up its wins over Uruguay and Italy by holding England to a dour 0-0 draw on Tuesday, enough to finish first in Group D. . Although Olivetti, a qualifier, had 13 aces, he failed to force a single break-point chance on Gasquets serve and lost his own three times. Gasquet next plays third-seeded Jerzy Janowicz of Poland, who won had 18 aces in a 6-2, 6-4 win against seventh-seeded Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France. . The 30-year-old Texas native was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 20th round of the 2001 amateur draft. Duke spent six years in Pittsburgh and also had stints with Arizona, Washington and Cincinnati.LOS ANGELES -- Even after three games and a cross-country flight in the previous five days, the Los Angeles Kings came out roaring at home with a three-goal first period against Winnipeg. Coach Darryl Sutters team knows all about peaking for the post-season after its Stanley Cup title run two years ago, and the Kings are counting down the games until they can try it again. Anze Kopitar scored two goals in the first period, Jonathan Quick made 24 saves, and the Kings beat the Jets 4-2 Saturday night for their sixth straight victory. Trevor Lewis and Tyler Toffoli also scored for the Kings, who havent lost since March 17. Marian Gaborik and Willie Mitchell had two assists apiece as Los Angeles took a big early lead and cruised to its 14th win in 17 games. "I dont think there is any coasting goes on, period," Sutter said. "Youre just trying to refine parts of your game, very simple. You are trying to take care of your own business first. Youre not a playoff team until you clinch the playoff spot." The Kings are just a couple of wins away from clinching their fifth straight playoff trip and a first-round matchup with San Jose or Anaheim. After 4 1/2 weeks of outstanding play out of the Olympic break, theyre all but locked into third place in the Pacific Division. Los Angeles has won 13 of 16 since Sochi, with three one-goal losses between two lengthy winning streaks. Kopitars third multigoal game of the season was set up by another strong offensive game from Kings newcomer Gaborik, who had his second multipoint performance on Los Angeles top line. "We have a chance to finish very strong and prepare for the playoffs," said Gaborik, who has eight points in his past nine games with Los Angeles. "This team works well in a system. Everybody is on the same page. Everybody is trusting each other. Its like one big machine." And that machine steamrolled the Jets in the opening 20 minutes. Matt Halischuk and Blake Wheeler scored in the third period for the Jets, who hadnt visited Los Angeles since Jan. 3, 1996. Ondrej Pavelec gave up three goals in the first period before getting pulled, and Al Montoya stopped 12 shots iin the final 40 minutes.dddddddddddd Winnipeg has lost four of six and 10 of 13, its playoff hopes dwindling to a faint prayer. The Jets trail eighth-place Phoenix in the Western Conference standings by nine points with seven games to go and three teams between them. The erstwhile Atlanta Thrashers finally have appeared in every NHL road arena since their move to Manitoba in 2011, but they couldnt keep up in the first period against their surging hosts. "We got taught a real good lesson in the first period about being ready to play a hard game," Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice said. "We were just giving up so much ice and backing up. The last two periods, we were ready to play. Theres a learning lesson for some." The Kings went ahead just 2:42 in when a sharp-angled shot somehow got past Pavelec for Lewis career-best sixth goal of the season. Lewis didnt score in his first 38 games of the season, but the grinding forward has four goals in March. Kopitar then scored when a rebound of Gaboriks shot banked off his skate and in for the Slovenian centres 23rd goal. Gaboriks shot sent Winnipeg defenceman Mark Stuarts stick flying into Pavelecs chest. Kopitar scored again late in the period, muscling past the Winnipeg defence for a rebound backhand. "There is no explanation," Wheeler said of the Jets early effort. "They came out with the kind of energy you need to start a hockey game. We didnt. Thats what happens. After the opening period, we figured it out a little bit." After a scoreless second period, Halischuk scored his first goal since Dec. 14 from right in front of Quick, banging home Evander Kanes pass from below the goal line in the corner. Quick made an amazing facedown save with 1 minute to play, sticking his right leg into midair to block a long Winnipeg shot. NOTES: The Kings have outscored their opponents 19-11 during their winning streak. ... Los Angeles has 44 victories, two shy of the regular-season club record with seven games to go. ... Mitchell had his first multipoint game since April 5, 2012. The stay-at-home defenceman missed all of last season with injuries, and he had seven points in his first 69 games this season. ' ' '
