I love it even more in this studio arrangement! I just can't stop listening to it. And I also like the video very much, I love that it's filmed in New York. What a truly great song it is! And I have such fond memories of the Milky Mooners trying to guess the words and what they all meant and what a great job they (we) did!

I am listening to / watching this several times each day!

I wonder how the next two months will pan out. Will we get to hear more new material before the official release? Also I am excited to think back to the weeks before HOOM came out: several tracks were previewed and I seem to remember that GIPC was the one I listened to most. And then the CD arrived and it turned out that at this was just one among numerous stunning songs.

I'm also listening to this several times a day! Although the novelty of the video wore off fast... I prefer this studio arrangement to the solo version. I hope there's a lot of harp on this new album too. I can't wait to hear Divers' finished arrangement. It's possibly one of my favourite Joanna songs. It's so exciting!!! I'm back lurking this board daily :glee:

I was tired of having to pull up youtube and get online to listen, especially when hiking with no connectivity.

FYI, Joanna on Sapokanikan (via NPR):

"Sapokanikan is a ragtimey encomium to the forces of remembrance, forgetting, accretion, concealment, amendment, erasure, distortion, canonization, obsolescence and immortality."

So good to have her back!

PS- I only became a Joanna fan a year and a half ago (March of 2014, to be exact), so this is my first time anticipating an album release from her. I'm wondering what this was like for HOOM? Obviously she didn't release a video, but did the Good Intentions tease happen before the album release? Were you made aware of the release date of the album? Was a single released? Just curious and hoping to start some chatter around here! :)

After being obsessed with all her albums, I'm now obsessed with "Sapokanikan".
I can't wait for "Divers", it will be the best album of the year! :notworthy:

(The live performance of "Leaving the City", then known as "What We Are Allowed", always grabbed my attention, can't wait for the studio version!! :hyper: )

So good to have her back! :) Btw, I have a question for long-time Joanna fan — I've only been obsessively listening to her music for a year and half now, so this is my first time experiencing an album release from her. For the sake of curiosity and starting some conversation around here, I was wondering what this time was like before HOOM was released? Obviously she didn't release a video, but did she release a single before the album's release date? Or was that when the Good Intentions video tease was released? How long did you have to wait for the album? Was she relatively quiet until the album dropped? Share your memories!

This was posted in the Joanna section of Unforumzed:

I'm very curious to hear how she uses those keyboards!

I waited to see if anyone else posted this, considering some info that was removed the next day after its publishing at the request of J Newsom.

http://www.thefourohfive.com/music/arti ... divers-144

The question asked whether Kim Keever, the artist, listened to the record as she chose the album art.
She answered that she hadn't, but that Joanna played her the song 'Divers', live in her art studio, while they worked on a 'version of the video.'

Not sure if this video was scrapped, or if it is a surprise.
Go figure!

A few observations, beginning with the track list and running times (minutes:seconds) as published elsewhere on the web...

Released by Drag City, 23 October 2015

1. "Anecdotes" .................................. 6:27

2. "Sapokanikan" ................................ 5:11
....... • video shared 10 Aug 2015
....... • previously referred to here as “Look And Despair”

3. "Leaving the City" ........................... 3:48
....... o previously referred to here as “new harp song: Hay and a clean stall”

4. "Goose Eggs" .................................. 5:01

5. "Waltz of the 101st Lightborne" .......... 5:22

6. "The Things I Say" ........................... 2:35
....... o previously referred to here as “new piano song: ...space of half a day”

7. "Divers" ........................................ 7:07
....... o previously referred to here as “The Diver’s Wife”

8. "Same Old Man" .............................. 2:26
....... o presumably the song performed with Kevin Barker in January 2008

9. "You Will Not Take My Heart Alive" ....... 4:01

10. "A Pin-Light Bent" .......................... 4:26

11. "Time, As a Symptom" ..................... 5:28

(Total playing time 51:52)

I've prefixed my assumptions with the symbol 'o'; but given the excellent work that others have done on the lyrics of the scattered songs that have been heard over the last five years, I would be surprised if any of those under 3, 6, or 7 are wrong. The one under 8 is pure surmise, but it would be a major coincidence if it were a different song. Also, the version I've heard (which reminds me slightly of Colleen, and fractionally of Ca' The Yowes To The Nowes) is also about 2½ minutes long, which adds a little more weight to the supposition.

Interesting to see that this album will contain some of her shortest songs since before MEM.

Goose Eggs - I am sure a deliberate harking-back to a line in Baby Birch.

Waltz of the 101st Lightborne - My first thought was to check if this was the official name of the division involved in the infamous 'Charge of the Light Brigade' during the Crimean War: it wasn't. All I came across under this title was a computer game!

Of the eleven songs, it would appear that six (1, 4, 5, 9, 10 & 11) have not been heard (or at least mentioned on MM) before. However, it's likely that one of them is the Americana-Style Piano Song that
LawnsOfDawns reported on 31.3.14 - and (for the purposes of the forthcoming JNST5) I'd be most grateful if he couild identify it for me as soon as possible after 23rd October!

On the subject of JNST5, I do want to ensure it's completed within the calendar year, but I realise that it's best to let everyone have at least a week or two to assimilate the new songs, which leaves quite a small window. I will probably get a preliminary phase underway quite soon, with the intention that it finishes about a week into November, at which time I'll introduce the main songs including all the new material.

Hoping that MilkyMoon's 'traffic' piks up significantly before then...

Hello all,

I was a regular on the original tadpoles forum about 10 years ago, and have been just lurking hard since then...for many years...ha. Tried to remember and resurrect my old username, but that was college and I think I smoked that memory away

Wondering: anyone think of Colleen as a pre-cursor to this long-awaited "diver" album? Down to the bottom of the deep blue sea...

Our Joanna has done it again!

Last time out she hit us with a TRIPLE album, and it seems that 23rd October 2015 will see the release of not one but TWO separate new albums by "everyone's favourite indie-rock harpist". We've known about one of them for a few weeks now, but then today's Washington Post contained the following item:

Joanna Newsom
Lincoln Theatre, Dec. 10, $45.
Ahead of the Oct. 23 release of her new album, “Drivers,” harp-playing indie-folk singer Joanna Newsom has announced she’s going on tour, with Alela Diane & Ryan Francesconi opening.

I am speculating here, but I suspect we can look forward to the early release of a video from this new album, called Skoda-Ka-Nissan, and an exciting tracklist with a few bonus remixes thrown in too. There's a revved-up version of Leavin' The City (produced, of course, by Van Dyke Parkes), as well as the exasperated title track which contains a sample from Soft As Chalk ("I have to catch a plane but my bags are at the carousel"), and the long awated SkyDrivers remix of her classic Clam, Cab, Cockle, Cowrie ("There are some mornings when the sky looks like a road"), previously only available on the rare Japan-only bootleg lp Milk Eyed Mazda.

01. Indicator
02. Skoda-Ka-Nissan
03. Leavin' the City
04. Grease Monkeys
05. Dance of the 102nd Traffic Patrol
06. The Things I Shout
07. Drivers
08. Same Old Manhole Cover
09. You And Me, Bessie [feat. Jon Pertwee]
10. A Headlight Fault
11. Time? It's On The Meter
Bonus Tracks
12. Clam, Cab, Cockle, Cowrie [SkyDrivers Rmx]
13. Have One For The Good Intentions Road
14. Well-Worn Medley: '81 / No Provenance / Yarn & Glue

Oh, Steve! My heart skipped a beat when I was just glancing over your message, I really believed we would be treated with two albums for a moment! I love the new titles...
I know Good Intentions Paving Company is supposed to be a driving song and thus should sound like a car, but I always hear more of a train thing when I listen to it.
