YES I agree wholeheartedly. This place wouldn't be the same without you Polli. I have purchaced my trumpet costume and will be posting pics soon.... um
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
My mother was really into all Motown-stuff and things like Tracy Chapman, Fleetwood Mac...could be worse, eh? Now she usually likes charts-stuff, slow R'n'B, OneRepublic, My dad was that classic rock guy, too Got his vinyl collection here. Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Beatles, Neil Young... Now he likes Italo-Pop, Phil Collins and still some artists he liked when he was younger, like Simply Red.
Oh, and they both used to love Michael Jackson. My mom still does.
My mom loves David Bowie, Santana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, Beck, Miles Davis, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, the B-52's, and so on. Then my dad likes Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, KT Tunstall, the Killers (he LOVES them), David Gray, ABBA, and that kind of stuff. We agree on a lot of music, but we also disagree on a lot. My dad does like Joanna Newsom though. He laughs at her voice. He laughs at CocoRosie too. But not in a insulting way.
And he used to make me pray, wearing a mask like a death's head. When he put me there in the back seat, and he said, "Jesus save me, Jesus save me."
When I was little my dad played alot of Bruce Springsteen, and sometimes some Billy Joel and Elton John, and my mom played lots of showtunes, especially this CD of West Side Story covers she'd play in the car. I don't really like much of what my parents listen to, it's not terrible but not my taste. They don't like my music at all, except for the popiest indie pop that's in my itunes. Whenever I play a Joanna CD my mom winces at every squeak. She never says anything, but I'm fairly certain she dislikes her. At least we have some music in common; because I love lots of folk musicans she grew up with.
you were very young when he died, nope? my father lost her mother very young too. my dad : ten years after, black sabbath, alice cooper, a hinch of glam rock, eric clapton but most of all santana i love too, french singers as leo ferré, and of course brel my mom : pink floyd, some other r&rollers of that kind but alas i don't really remember her tastes, carole king, carly simon, brassens, joe dassin
my mom introduced me to classical and jazz music, my dad rock, pop, prog
they shared dire straits, brel, pink floyd as a common devotion, the beatles, rolling stones were banned in our house and i'm glad of it as i consider them as complete shit (sorry for the beatles maniac)
being older than dirt myself...my mom listened to a lot of musicals, i still know most of the words to Camelot and My Fair Lady(and shhhhh, i still like em too), Dave Clark 5, Herb Alpert and the Brass, things that were pop in the 60's. if my dad was crazy about any music:
All day I faced, a barren waste, without the taste of water, cool water.
Old Dan and I, with throats burned dry, and souls that cry for water cool, clear water.
Keep a moving Dan don't you listen to him Dan he's a devil not a man and he spreads a burning sand with water.
Dan can you see that big green tree, where the waters' running free, and it's waiting there for me and you? It's water, cool, clear water.
The nights are cool, and I'm a fool, each stars a pool of water, cool water.
But with the dawn, I'll wake and yawn and carry on to water cool, clear water.
Keep a moving Dan don't you listen to him Dan he's a devil not a man and he spreads a burning sand with water.
Dan can you see that big green tree, where the waters' running free, and it's waiting there for me and you? It's water, cool, clear water. cool, clear water. cool, clear water.
The thing i like best about deciphering Joanna's songs...i'm always wrong.
I never really grew up to my mum's taste in music, because my dad usually controlled the car CD player. So it was a lot of The Beatles, 80s bands such as Tears for Fears and Talk Talk, and U2. The first gig I went to was U2 with my dad, during the 360 tour. The stage and sheer amount of people were incredible; I don't know when I'll get to experience something like that again. Then this year we went to Simple Minds, another of my dad's favourites.
The music my mom and auntie listened to 10-12 years ago really shaped who I am now. My mom listens to the music my friends listen to. Florence and the Machine, Cake, Weezer. But when I was a child I listened to NIN, Nirvana, Sublime, Mr Bungle. It really shaped who I am now.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
