Musical memories

This is an extension of the thread in "Right On." Post musical memories of any sort! Is there a song or album that reminds you of a particular time or place?

When I hear anything by Elvis, I remember playing in the rocks underneath the grandstand at the fairground in Mayfield Kentucky, when I was four years old. That's what I was doing when Elvis played there. Although I remember being there, and playing in the rocks, I had no idea who was performing that night until my Aunt Pauline told me around 10 years ago, 46 years after it happened.

I get a smell association when I listen to Aha, which is just strange. When I got one of my first albums which was scoundrel days by Aha, it came in a plastic sleeve which had a strange chemical smell and I swear I can still remeber that smell when I listen... Odd.

It also reminds me of times I spent with my brother when we were kids, we were best friends and we used to listen to music and write music together. The songs were terrible

Take Care by Beach House, Cosmia and Good Intentions Paving Company remind me of my boyfriend last year. He only listened to really poppy stuff and those were the tracks I had converted him to (it was a long road away) just before it was all cut short. Sometimes when I listen to Good Intentions I feel like I can still hear him singing along, getting all the words wrong and making everything sound french and stupid.

I can't listen to Kent, ABBA, Jose Gonzalez, or Bo Kaspers without thinking of camp.

I have a ton so I need to pick the best ones...

Fiona Apple's "Tidal" reminds me of the end of high school, my trip to Europe, and playing "Tomb Raider."

Sheryl Crow's "Tuesday Night Music Club" reminds of the insanely hot dorm rooms at Hamilton College in central NY during the Empire State Games.

Kaki King's "Dreaming of Revenge" and CocoRosie's "The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn" remind me of my last few months in Arizona. "Cheap Demo Bad Science" by Serafina Steer reminds me of the first few months there.

Tom McRae's self-titled album makes me think of snow, because I was reading "Into the Wild" when I first got it for my English class summer reading. Hated the book, loved the album!

"A River Ain't Too Much To Love" by Smog is a winter album for me because I listened to it obsessively one January. I had my eye on a guy at the time who was a sort of mountain man type, and that album fit perfectly with what I was feeling.

Then there are a couple of albums that, hard as I try, I can't stop associating with video games I was playing when I first got them. So when I listen to "Hush Hush" by Nathalie Nordnes I think of The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker (doesn't help that there's a song on there called "Sailing," which is what you do for half that game) and when I listen to "The Big Machine" by Emilie Simon I think of Animal Crossing.

Do any of you guys associate some music more with day time and some with night time? I do really strongly, I listen to entirely different music depending on whether it's day or night.

Yes, Billie Holiday is a night time music for me. Sitting in my living room with just the street lights outside and drawing while listening to Billie Holiday.

Oh yes, tom. I associate some music with seasons. Kid Harpoon will always be summer. "Thimble Island' by Rasputina is night, too. Most Rasputina is nighttime music. Except 'Sister Kinderhook'. That's summer music. Finntroll is my favourite metal group (aside from Mr. Bungle), and they are about as winter as music can get. 'GOing to Georgie' by the Mountain Goats is a very special song to me. Priscilla put it on a mix cd she sent me three years ago. Them last year, Kenny put it on a mixer for me, and now that song makes me cry. And 'Surfin' Bird' by the Trashmen makes me sad, because my late grandfather would always play it for me. I went through a 90s rap phase while I was in Norway. So '99 problems' and stuff like that reminds me of cold winters and fjords.

Sufjan Stevens's Illinois album is wintertime music. Rilo Kiley's "The Execution of All Things" is summer music. Antony and the Johnsons' "Swanlights" is autumn. I don't have a Spring one yet... oh, and RF and Lili De La Mora's "Eleven Continents" reminds me of Puerto Rico (specifically the song "Miles and Miles" which is weird because I don't even like it that much).

AYO Technology(50cent cover) by Milow reminds me of my entire Euro trip, because it was ALWAYS on the radio. 'Mykonos' by Fleet Foxes reminds me of Holland, it was on mtv all the time there. And a Toto tape was in the car in Norway.

One precious memory for me is waking up the first time next to my darling ( no suggestive thoughts allowed! :D we behaved more than well ) with Death Cab for Cutie's "Title Track" ( his stereo system uses music as alarm clock ).

And the Counting Crows' cover of "Big Yellow Taxi" always reminds me of my two best friends, it was kind of 'our' song, as it came out.

Though Natasha says the album is very specifically fit to the English landscape, anything bu Bat for Lashes, especially Fur & Gold reminds me of driving out on Long Island. It's just perfect beach-at-night music.
