Scott, I loved your recording. You've got a great voice!

And Mike, your harp playing is lovely! It's so beautiful and relaxing. And the '81 dance mix is awesome.

*Puts headphones in and listens* <3 <3 <3

You are awesome!! I wish I could play like that.

I will at some point post my lame old version of jackrabbits. Then the other song I've been working on which is turning out more like a lullaby.

Here is my harp cover of Sawdust & Diamonds:

I've basically been practising it every evening for the last few months, and I gave up and just decided to upload it as it is, since I don't think I'm going to get any better at it any time soon lol.

I've done a ukelele cover of Emily as well, so I'll probably be uploading that soon!

i listen to you're on a good day, i love your voice, wish you can have better sound quality
rosa i love it too, but in your place i'll be more relax with the rythm on the harp, sometimes it's sounds too mecanic, precise, do you know what i mean, add more groove, perhaps slow down a bit the general rythm of the song?

This is a little song I wrote a couple weeks ago in the car, and recorded just a couple of days ago in my new apartment. A couple of warnings, I'm a poor vocalist and a potty mouth.

Also, stunning-sky, you're cover of Sawdust and Diamonds is lovely.

Ok in a week I think I will post a cover of either Jackrabbits or Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie
it's down to which one is easiest for me to learn. This is fun!

You're all so talented! When I try to sing Joanna's songs, I'm either not comfortable with the high notes, or I try to sing an octave lower (I don't even know if that's what it is) and I'm not comfortable with the low notes. Can anyone who knows the first thing about music tell me if there's a middle ground where I don't have to growl the low notes and my voice doesn't falter on the high notes? ><

Also, it's interesting that other British folks seem to keep their accents when they're singing. I'm suddenly from California when I'm singing along to Joanna, New Jersey when I'm singing Streetlight Manifesto songs, etc.

If you look at the singers and bands from the UK that achieved any kind of success in the US back in the 60's, many (maybe most) of them sang with very little of what I call an English accent. The music had it's roots in America (blues, rock 'n' roll, jazz), and I think that an effort was made to sing with an American accent. Why some decided not to do that (Herman's Hermits, and Freddie and the Dreamers stand out in my mind), I don't know. Perhaps it was a conscious choice, or it might have been just a built-in inability to mimic the accent. Some people are just terrible at it. You sound like you're not one of them.

I am pretty good at accents to begin with, so it could just be that. I just do it without thinking - I find it really difficult to sing with my own accent. I'd need to do it consciously and it's really hard for me to do it without exaggerating my accent, because I start to think, "What would I sound like singing this?" and it becomes like an impression of myself, if that makes any sense. :P

I tend to just sing a song as it was sung when I learnt it. Like my school song: I remember the head of the Junior School used to teach us the words (it's in Latin), and she'd always encourage us to "sing poshly", which meant she'd stop us every time someone used a glottal stop (saying "florea'" instead of "floreat"). Now I sing it with alveolar polosives where I'd normally use glottal stops. We all thought the vowels she told us to use terribly funny and we'd amuse ourselves by sitting around aping the drawn-out English ooooos and aaaaas. Amusingly enough, when she spoke on the phone in front of us she was incomprehensibly Dundonian to our middle class ears. Conversely, I sing Auld Lang Syne with a more pronounced accent than I speak with, because I learnt it at weddings and Hogmanay parties where most of the guests spoke with an accent broader than mine. Nursery rhymes are probably the closest to my own accent, because I learnt them from my parents.

Though I also do people's voices - or their mannerisms if I can't do their voice - without thinking when I'm reporting what they said. I do a great impression of my Latin teacher, so every time I'm reporting something he said it comes out in his voice; I can't do my Director of Studies' voice, so instead I do the leaning in slowly, intense eye contact thing she does and mimic the slow pace of her speech. My voice is very changeable to begin with, depending on who I'm talking to. I also imitate the artist's mannerisms when I'm singing, come to think of it - even if I'm listening to a piece of classical music, if I've seen it being performed I'll imitate the conductor or one of the musicians at the appropriate moments. Maybe I'm just a natural mimic.

I hope I retain some of my accent, have to fight to though, I do naturally sing with an American accent. I suppose it is all down to influence.

You should post some singing Jordan
