Thanks Dwaink!

I had never heard Minnie Ripperton allthough I had heard about her many times (Kate Bush even mentions her in her song "Blow Away"). Her voice sounds great allthough I'm not too keen on her music (on the basis of that Youtube video). I was very surprised as I thought she was a white woman. :)

I had never heard about Tina Dico or Helen Reddy...

Well, my intention for this thread was to sum up some sort of catalogue of great voices, vocal ranges or at least unusual ways of singing, the kind of voices that make you want to say "Here's the best singer in the world" as travvyishot said about Björk. Minnie Ripperton definitely gets into the category, so does Janis Joplin. Probably Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris too. But, maybe I'm wrong, I thought the others ,allthough they're obviously good singers, sounded rather average in the way they sing. They seem to have a more traditional approach to singing, don't they (even Joan Jett)? I mean compared to Björk, Joanna Newsom, KB, Lisa Gerrard..., they don't seem ,to me, to have an impressing or particular appeal. I don't judge their musical qualities or even their vocal abilities. I just find their voices more "usual" (no intention to hurt you Dwaink  ).

For example, in the jazz area, I forgot to mention Rose Murphy who had a very unusual voice and different way of singing:

Good posts - agree with most all of them and have seen a handful of them live.

I would toss in a few like Jane Siberry, Loreena McKennitt, Sheila Chandra, Sarah McLachlan

There is one singer who is very unknown to those outside of the Lovehounds & Ectophiles world, who has her own cult following and rarely if ever plays live. Many have called her abilities "supernatural"...

Happy Rhodes

Oh yes! You're so right Wanbli! Happy Rhodes definitely has an incredible voice! This mixture of very low range and very high register is truly amazing! I could never understand why this voice has never been more talked about.

Here's a link to download many songs of her discography with Happy's agreement:

I also agree about Jane, Loreena, Sheila and Sarah who are very good singers as well as very good musicians. There are some others such as Stina Nordenstam, Regina Spektor, Anneli Drecker (Bel Canto), Laura Groves (Blue Roses), Cathy Davey (I mentioned not so long ago...), Martha Wainwright (Rufus' sister) and some others I probably don't recall...

Pierre the links i left were limited at best and perhaps not the songs that show off their talents the best. While many of these ladies "wallowed" about in pop music mires; Ronstadt, Carpenter.. u should look around some in their work to find the full measure of their voices. Sadly Minnie died not long after the tour that take was from, she wasn't around long enough to have a full showcase of her talent. Ronstadt especially had/has a wonderful voice, with great range, though she was stuck doing record label crap to make a living. I particularly despise some of the butcherings of songs she was party to in that vein, but i don't despairage her vocal talent. If your angle is unique voices, then yes perhaps some of them fail on that level. And on that level Phoebe Snow has the singular most unique voice i have ever heard(listen more deeply there).

holy shit you went ALL OUT hahahah... this is what i enjoy in places like this. i mean you clearly put a lot of time and effort into that, and its the type of post that actually motivates people to listen to new music, and i dunno, i find it really encouraging.

most of the artists i listen to.. i love their vocals, but i wouldn't call them the best singers. i mean, bob dylan? like, i don't know what list he fits on lol.. im more concerned with the emotion they invoke. with bjork... i remember listening to her when she did oceana at the olympics (i was like 12 i think) and i knew there was something about her. i watched it, and... kind of hated it, lol, but at the same time she captivated me, and im so glad. and still when i compare her to my other favorite singers, she is near the top of the list for things like... i dont know, actual skill or control... and since she can tear me apart emotionally, i dunno, its a good combo hahaha i give her lots of props. she OWNS her voice, and shes so fucking unique, god damn i love her.

so far this list has been about women, but.. i really want to bring in a different aspect of the subject "voices". so some boys. also because... pretty much all my favorite singers have already been mentioned haha i mostly only listen to female singers. rar! should have checked this thread sooner ;)

captain beefheart - fucker had a 5 octave range in his voice haha... on top of that he just straight up rules. i tried to sing like him once anddddddd i think i broke something in my throat. he's old now. im sad :(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IbvSmLqqZw

cedric bixler zavala - jealousssssss... if i could wail like that, i would die very happy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DN9E8Eawhu0

john frusciante - i bought the album "Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T Shirt" when i was in grade 10, on a total fucking whim. i was on a school trip and just saw it and got it, because i liked "blood sugar" by the RHCP. i had no idea what this album would do to me. his singing was the most... honest i had ever heard in my life. its so beautiful. lyrics at about a minute in, listen till at least the 2 minute mark.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wICsfTDDPYA
if this isn't your thing, you can check him out when he's NOT on drugs... look up him doing "how deep is your love", its beautiful. actually, i looked it up for you, here. pretty good since he had his mouth replaced hahaha. the second half, FUCK, how is that humanly possible lol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvG6bYcHrIM

antony - ghost. beautiful show, if you're into him, watch the whole show YEA YEA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLpBM6eWcYw

lol okay thats it.... i'm really picky about vocals, but im starting to realize that it doesn't make them good, cause i don't know exactly what i'm picky FOR. i think alot of singers are amazing, and i don't know why exactly. thanx for all the new tunes though, this is siqq, im going through them again tonight, see what sticks the second time around. XOXOXOXO

yeah katie cruel is a great tune. Karen Dalton Was Dylan's fave singer when he was playing Greenwich Village in the early 60s

Here is Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes covering it

the whole thing about singers I find to be an interesting phenomenon. More than any other instrument in the world, it's the one thing that you really have to be born with as training can only go so far without the raw physiological capacity. Of course to be a prodigy on any instrument, you still have to be born with the gift to a large degree, but with the vocals it is so much more obvious and palpable.

As much as I am moved viscerally by an incredible singer's usage of their primary instrument, I'm almost tempted to think that they got unfairly lucky in life, being born with this coveted thing that can turn them into such revered icons in popular culture. But then again anyone can be seen as been born lucky with just about anything I suppose. I will say that I'm typically much less impressed with someone's vocal prowess than with the totality of their musical presentation. I'm so much more interested in the entire context of the musical vision, creativity/uniqueness, lyrical content (if there is one), musicianship and presentation. I'm in no way suggesting that the rest of you aren't concerned with these things as well; I think I'm just in a very philosophical mood today.

having said all that, I'm grateful for the very thoughtful and thorough list presented here. I'm glad to hear Sheila Chandra being mentioned. I love her album "Quiet" so much that I still listen to it on a regular basis. As for Dead Can Dance, I'm not sure why but although I appreciate and recognize Lisa Gerrard's vocal magnitude, I actually prefer hearing Brendan Perry's singing on those records. Go figure. I'm still debating in my head whether I tend to enjoy female or male vocals better...

happy listening! :)
