what classical music are people into? if any? does anyone like shostakovich?
those of you with spotify search "dmitry shostakovich, belgian radio and television philharmonic orchestra symphony no. 10" and just listen to it while you do whatever you do if you don't want to give it your full attention.
it's just amazing!

which...welcome  never been much of a classical fan, that said it was peppered through my youth in commercials and cartoons...and pretty much everywhere. I've always described the perfect jazz album by the fact that i am asleep as it ends(mean that in a good way:)) but with long classical music i can sleep right at the start. there are a few bigs that break down this barrier of course. Bela Fleck has done some classical on the banjo that caught my ear

I have more of a preference for pieces than for specific composers, so here it goes:
-Copland clarinet concerto
-Sibelius No. 5 (last movement)
-Rachmaninoff piano concerto no. 2
-Hindemith harp sonata
-Ginastera harp concerto (bad ASS)
-The Chairman Dances (John Adams)
-Nielsen clarinet concerto

Although as I make this list, I can think of some composers: Philip Glass, Carlos Salzedo, Debussy, and Piazzolla.

I'll check it out! There is a John Williams harp concerto that came out last year but I've never heard it. I haven't necessarily heard good things, though.

The Badings harp concerto is really creepy, if you want a listen send me a PM with your e-mail and I can send you the recording. It's not online.

And the Natra harp sonatina is creepy, too! That one's on YouTube.

Ah yes, I remember the Natra sonatina quite well... Mostly because that's the first time I've seen a video of my favorite harp (the Salvi Scolpita :luv:) in action... Sorta sounds like me when I'm in one of them funky moods... Although my tone isn't nearly as good. I did the unthinkable and started playing harp without lessons.

Big fan of Wilhelm Stenhammar. Especially his second symphony.

:hyper: i am listening to rachmaninov's second piano concerto right this minute... crazy! i'm not sure i even like the romantic stuff as much, for example i played britten's war requiem in salisbury cathedral at easter and it was the best music moment ever other than a joanna newsom concert or two!
i do love that concerto though, i played it (violin not piano, heck) in summer so was just listening again for a bit of nostalgia
i'll listen to everything else you wrote about sometime soon.. a lot of respect for john adams!

Sadly, the two JNew concerts I went to weren't as satisfying as I"d hoped - I think I chalked it up SO much and have done other really satisfying musical things in my life that it wound up not blowing my mind. It was good and I enjoyed it, but I thought I'd be in tears or something... and I wasn't.

If you can find it, you should also check out John Adams' "Gnarly Buttons."

i LOVE vivaldi. but also I love nigel kennedy, zoe keating, and julia kent. give them a try, especially zoe. she plays very intricate cello music using one off those playback pedal thingies.

I'd love to get into classical music but I don't really understand what to look for, what to get from it, where to start. It's big and confusing.

i agree doublewuzzy the pieces i love most are pieces i've played which is a bit of an unfortunate disadvantage to others i suppose. i think a good place to start are bands which incorporate orchestras, joanna being best example, then move into things like debussy or film soundtracks, i like patrick doyle's score for "a little princess" - you should look it up, a lot of harp, childrens choirs and indian sounding "stuff". there is a lot to get from soundtrack because it's a lot easier to understand than other classical music due to it's clear visual addition to help understand the meaning behind it. then i would say the things that i personally get most out of classical music is the emotion and meaning behind it, e.g. shostakovich's 10th symphony is my favourite and the whole thing is in reaction to stalin's death (celebraaate) and this is epitomized in the second movement -

just look at the emotion in the players and dudamel!! for me and other classical lovers (i guess) it's exhilarating.
classical rant of the day over for me i think..

I've been in love with Shostakovich since the early 70's when I bought an old, scratched-up Russian-labeled LP in a thrift store in Heidelberg. <3

Don't forget Ravel!

And if you're all about harp, he wrote a chamber piece for harp, flute, clarinet, and string quartet. Pretty awesome.
