Joni's voice has always had a sorta gruff edge to it cause she has smoked cigs since she was very young. I have been wracking my brain trying to think of a KB song that reminds me of Joni's stuff, and i can't...maybe its that rural Canada vs urban UK thing that seperates their styles so? But just as Kate paved the way for so many others i think Joni paved the way for Kate(and others)..hard to be uninfluenced by that

oh and juniper try The Whole Story and go to Hounds from that

What's the big deal if she was influenced by Joni? Is it really that insulting?

Listened to 'Hejira' this morning and I really liked it. Especially the 'Song for Sharon'.

Joni is the greatest songwriter of her generation, and probably the best performer to. Nobody could play and sing with the confidence and skill that Joni could, especially considering some of the monstrously difficult stuff she wrote.

Whilst I unabashedly admit that Song to a Seagull is one of my favourite Joni albums, I probably am more of a fan of her post-Blue work: Court and Spark, Hejira, Hissing of Summer Lawns, and even Don Juan's Reckless Daughter (which displays Joni REALLY in her element) showcase the sheer breadth of her songwriting, performing and compositional talents better than any of her other creative periods, and For the Roses is just start-to-finish one of the most mind-bogglingly brilliant albums ever - she conveyed the experience of the artist better than anyone has, and images of "the arbutus rustling" or the "empty spotlight" of the moon are just hauntingly beautiful. She was so far ahead of her time that it's impossible to comprehend. And I will always defend Turbulent Indigo.
