Gigs

Just been to a good gig? Want to tell us about your favourite live performance of all time? Do it here.

I just got back from seeing Wild Nothing. I really love his album but live he was kind of underwhelming. Fun and worth the £6 I paid to go but nothing special. His music loses its lazy melancholy live where he tries to excite and entertain. The drummer is insanely hot though. Actually the opening act, a slow dub/ "ghoststep" duo called Becoming Real were rather excellent.

A recent favorite gig that I attended was a friend's large group called The Confabulators.

Autumn I saw JN, The National (good), Beach House (excellent), and some other stuff I'm sure I can't remember. Just got back from seeing Sleigh Bells tonight. They were absolutely brilliant, had the whole crowd basically aggressively spasming around the venue for the best part of an hour. Sooooo good.

Last gig I was at that wasn't Joanna was Streetlight Manifesto in Glasgow. Probably my favourite thing ever, no exaggeration. I'm not the dancing type, but I was drenched, like literally soaked through, with sweat by the end of the gig from flailing myself around like a demon. I've never felt more alive. And the music was utterly hypnotic - not like it is when you see Joanna, where you sort of drift out of reality and lose yourself in it, more like you become a conduit of the music, another instrument in the ensemble. Plus I almost literally fancy the pants off Tomas Kalnoky - like, I'm pretty sure if I found him any hotter they would just fly off. Meeting him would be awesome but I'm afraid I might try to kiss him.

Funny you should mention trances, Jordan - did you know that if you listen to the same thing for 13-15 minutes (i.e. the same rhythm or the same little melodic fragment, and it DOES NOT CHANGE), you will go into a trance? This is part of the explanation behind healing ceremony-type situations (West African ndepp or those people with the snakes in backwoods American churches).

My favorite-est concert of all-time was Kaki King, May 2010 in Chicago. I was actually a little unsure if I would enjoy, though I love Kaki, because I hadn't really listened to her new album much. She played TONS of songs from every single one of her albums - every song that I consider a favorite of mine was performed. The opener went right on at 7:30 when they were supposed and she came on about five minutes after the left - right around 8:00pm. None of this "waiting around for two hours" crap - one of my BIGGEST pet peeves with concerts (Joanna included). The crowd was pretty small as well, so I was nice and close to the stage. She was funny, she talked to us, we talked to her, and she even jumped off the stage and started dancing through the audience during the encore - I was, literally, like 5 feet from her.

I think CocoRosie would've been my favorite, though, if I hadn't moved to New York State a week before they came to Chicago >.<

I saw 31knots and Scout Niblett about 1,5 weeks ago. 31knots were AWESOME, I saw Joe's band Tu Fawning in March and they were even better, he must be a genius, although he did kind of a strip at his 31knots show, that was rather....eewww.
I thought I could only be disappointed by Scout Niblett, but she was great and soooo cute! Love her drummer. She did a really nice cover of "Maybe I'm amazed"

Been to a few excellent gigs recently; Nicolas Jaar and Baths. Missed Gang Gang Dance last night because I had no one to go with. So sad.

The last concert I went to was Timber Timbre at Joe's Pub, and it was absolutely spellbinding.
(I think they may have been opening for someone else but I didn't stay for that act)

and I just saw Suzanne Vega downtown, concert in the park, singing Caramel during a magnificent sunset, it was unbelievable. She's so talented, she wrote great songs when she was a teenager and now she's been doing this for almost 30 years but her voice hasn't aged at all, even when she's doing reworks of old materials she doesn't sound washed up, just ~*a breath of fresh air*~

nice rainbow!

in 1986 while attending college in Maryland I drove one night(4 hrs each way) to NYC to be front row to see Suzanne Vega at the Ritz.

I handed her a dozen roses with a thank you note about how her first album the year before had impacted me as a young artist. <3
