Florence and the Machine

my wife and I have really enjoyed discovering Florence and the Machine a few months ago.
I hope her being on the upcoming Twilight movie soundtrack doesn't overexpose her music
My comparisons to Bat for Lashes and Kate Bush are less around voice- and more around the visceral, visual, sensory nature of their compositions...where they are seen, heard and felt as a holistic piece and less a simple song :)

If you haven't seen Florence, check these:

I saw Florence in concert too, I have to say that she could do better, but she's totally ruined by her major, it seems she has no control of her life and direction and everything is decided from label and her father that follows her as if she were dum (speaking about that it seems her father is obsessed about Florence's business). On the album there are just a couple song that are decent. Bat for Lashes is much more better, she has her own style, she doesn't play to be a femme fatale, without boring with all the same postures, unnecessary videos and dresses. Anyway, that's is just my opionion

I find her so annoying. It's fine for her to be a pop artist but I dislike the way she packages herself as this crazy, offbeat, alternative solution to mainstream pop music when really she sounds just like it.

The xx's remix of You've Got the Love is superb though.

i love florence, i find this really well produced, some songs are awful but arrangements are brilliant, and she has this voice!! that's weird you compared florence to bat, i saw bat in concert (in a festival) and musically it's so poor! she has no voice, this ersatz of kate bush whithout strengh, she's just an another sexy girl who sing...florence has this energy i missed in pop music, and no matter it's just "pop music" as bjork said, she make pop music too. i feel the mainstrean in some songs but the whole album is full of great discovering. i don't think she act alternativ as lady gaga, she's just as she is, i mean, i read a bunch of interview and she's just very natural and straight speaking, that's cool in that world of major label. don't know if in ten years people reminds her but for now it's cool, full of energy, great sound, great voice, i don't ask for more :luv:

Not a fan. She sings with such conviction but has absolutely nothing to say. I guess exploiting her voice is all she has.

lol, start a positive thread about music and the trolls and bashers come out of the woodwork

LS2 never explains how she is exploiting her voice and those who claim she is attempting to be what she is not- what is she trying to be? Show me the alternative an kooky marketing please.

I love the Drumming song and the lyrics- makes me dance around the house and the lyrics have great meaning to me.

I guess every pop artist and every one of their songs needs to have deep meaning or else it is vacuous.

LONG LIVE VACUOUS SONGS I CAN DANCE TO!

don't understand why you all are so pedant and insult her, insult her is insulting people who like her, and i like her so i fell insulted, what's that: she's shit, bat for lashes is shit, dirty projectors are shit...ok no discussion here. perhaps did i insulted both and i regret, i can explain with real argument why their music isn't interesting, not only be rude...

she's young, she's a pop artist, don't care what she pretend, some of her song are 50% better than most of the "arty artists" i hear, she's got a voice! i'm bored with all those folky fairy childish singers, someone said just use her voice isn't sufficiant, what the hell!!! she's a singer!!! i'm a cinematrographer, only doing good looking images isn't sufficiant????????do i be a good knitter too?????????

is someone here read bjork's lyrics? come on! it's crappy and i LOVE bjork, why pop is always categorized like shit, i'm sorry but sometimes i need to listen something powerful, danceful and so on, sometimes joanna newsom annoying me, YES! i can't be all day long part of the underground young fuckers who pretend to be more undergroung than the subway...pathetic...

foutu snobisme de merde

you're extremely worked out about this. there's no reasons whatsoever to be INSULTED. that's a tad ridiculous. it's called a discussion. no one's been unreasonable in stating why we don't care for her music. if you didn't want to read opinions why would you bother to post a topic?

she SCREAMS her high notes and that's why her voice does not suffice. i've seen live videos and it was a mess. "dog days" is a good song, yes, but not anything profound or even all that original. the best part (for me) is the harp and i'm pretty sure she's not playing that.

i gave her a chance... she came highly recommended to me and i listened to the album several time. i found the lyrics to be insipid and i've already shared my thoughts on her vocals. hope i didn't make you cry.

How about those who don't like artists listed in this forum simply skip clicking on those artist names to post negative and insulting crap? What s the point of posting?

I personally cannot stand Tori Amos- do you see me in that thread talking shit about her?

Noone cares if you don't like an artist.

Yes, opinions are like assholes -everyone has one and they stink- some more than others, in particular if you don't wipe well.

I think you are massively overreacting, Wanbli. You made a thread asking for opinions on Florence, and people engaged, both positively and negatively. You say 'Noone cares if you don't like an artist', which to me seems a very immature point of view but also untrue; we are allowed to share our thoughts and perhaps with discussion can be persuaded to give her another listen or engage in open discussion about her music. The fact that you get defensive about people not liking her just seems to me that you have some misplaced sense of pride in your thread that can be damaged all too easily. And if you want a fascist site where only positive opinions are allowed, then maybe you'd be better off looking elsewhere.

Wasn't intending to offend anyone :P I don't like her music, I find the song 'a kiss with a fist' offensive, and it was her presence as a Latitude headliner that filled it with drunk, precocious private schooled kids. Which was shit. Cmon, on a Joanna Newsom forum we should be able to put up with people saying that artists one liked are terrible :P (not to draw comparison, god no).

I'm not saying I'm right. I resent most 'mainstream' artists as I feel it's not the music that's important, it's the aesthetic, it's how it'll go down with people's friends, it's how vapidly quotable the lyrics are. I resent that it's this kind of music that gets attention, gets the bands money, fame and respect as an artist, when really their only art is catering to the whim of the witless majority of the market.

And, in my opinion, Florence is one of those artists.

florence isn't so terrible as so pretended indie folk musicians, the pb tom isn't the negative feeling against florence (i don't care so much about her) but the way it's expressed, i red very extreme and rude post, that's all.

ribbonbows, don't be rude at me or i'll turn into the non humorous milki, and it's not the place for fight here, so take your advice back and go on...
