One of the fun things about MP3s is that you can get some unexpected dynamics going on between disparate tracks. In the old days, one would have had to have changed discs, but now, with playlists, you can sequence whatever you like in whatever order you like.

I use MediaMonkey a lot, and that allows you to close up the gaps between tracks (or even overlap them), and once in a while, something amazing happens.

The one I am finding a real 'classic' is
Gee, Officer Krupke (original Broadway cast of West Side Story) leading into
Good Friday (CocoRosie) [album version]

However, really good albums plan these moments in their running orders.

On The Beatles' (white album), the song Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey is a fairly unremarkable one, but it makes a perfect lead-in to the amazing Sexy Sadie.

And just recently, I've come to appreciate more and more how leading into Cassiopeia makes the already brilliant "En Gallop" just a little bit more stellar.

Björk's Vespertine is full of such moments, but I especially enjoy the way Aurora follows on from the brief, tinkling Frósti. It reminds me, too, of the first two tracks on Nico's The Marble Index: Prelude and Lawns Of Dawns. (Incidentally, for years, all issued versions of this record / cd were faulty as there was a pronounced cyclic hiss during Prelude. This was finally cleaned up in the version released as part of The Frozen Borderline double cd set ... but oddly I now kinda miss that hiss!)
