i understand the joke thing as the rythm is quite ridiculous, can't really explain why, but this doo dam pace on the piano makes me goosebumps (and not for pleasure), the voice, i really really dislike the whole thing, and as i can't understand the lyrics (ones i didn't translate and never do) i can't appreciate that part...sorry...

I LOVE the book of right-on, but GIPC as never been a favorite! I've always felt very odd about it and kept my secret for fear that people would think I'm crazy.

I am also confused about people dissin Easy. How, pray tell, do you not love that fuckin song???

Also, it's really interesting to note that there isn't much agreement here on what the worst song is. I think that's a good thing, because it shows you that you may dislike a song only because you haven't really "discovered" it yet. For example, I just found out that Cosmia was a good song. Who knew?

Oh I think Easy is definitely a lyrical standout on HOOM. Such a curious emotional standpoint that is expressed perfectly and beautifully.

I think for me it's "You and Me, Bess"
And I also don't get why everyone's loving "Go Long" that much, I mean...it's a good song but I have the impression that there's something terribly wrong with the sound recording. While listening to the CD I have to turn the volume up to its maximum and Joanna's voice is still hardly more than a whisper, and I can't hear the kora clearly. Seems like a pulp of sound with swishing noises.

I really like Easy's lyrics too. She uses clichés, but she twists them. There's that dreadful double meaning of "life-giver", too.

The last lines of Easy are so terrific, though! I love the whole song, but those last lyrics are just so perfect.

Bad teenage poetry.

"Let me love you.
How about it?
How about what I have to say?
How about that livelong day?
How am I gonna stay here
without you?"

I don't know, I just can't get into it. I like the stanza about the Roanoke and the frog, but the rest is so bland and simple and because of that, to me, unfeeling. I want to like it. Really.

It's not bad, it's simply expressed because there is a churlish simplicity to the mood of what she's saying. I find Easy sinister and deeply affecting, as Jordan says it's the way she twists clichés; "Who died and made you in charge of who loves who", the disturbing force of her feeling and the hint that she feels it's a right for the object of her affection to receive her love - "I was born to love / and I intend to love you".
But then the emotional complexity of the song lies in the fact that halfway through the persona loses power, she begins with strength and genuinely creepy intent but realises towards the close that in fact she is powerless to force her love on another; "one can't carry the weight / or change the fate of two", and where she starts the track with poetic force she ends it as a shadow, a bloody mary who in fact has no strength to realise her aching and unrequited love, and the desperate plea "let me love you".

This is just one of the great lyrical complexities of the track, the stripping of he strength of the authorial persona.

Yesterday Sara found a paper in the backseat of my car which had the Easy lyrics and my attempt at deciphering them. I've given a lot of thought to the song but so far nothing's convinced me. Guess it's just personal preference.

Interesting stuff. I voted No Provenance, it leaves me cold and I find it pretty boring to be honest. I'm also not a fan of Occident or Esme really, and I don't like Ribbon Bows much (though there is that different section 3/4s through which kind of saves it).
Having said that Jackrabbits and Soft As Chalk should NOT be on this list! I find the mood of Jackrabbits very sad, and those first lines are just beautiful. And Soft As Chalk, well, how can you not love that jaunty, rollercoaster piano line? I also like Autumn, again for the sad, resigned atmosphere it has.
Well, opinions eh.

Soft as Chalk is one of my favourites. While, over and over, rear up! Stand down! Lay round! Trying to sound out or guess the reasons to sleep like a soldier without rest, but there is no treason where there is only law-less-ness, lawlessness! Guhh~<3
