Excessive?

Hello all,

As a musician I understand the importance and privilege of artistic agency.

But I feel with that agency requires discretion.

The material on Have One on Me is really lackluster and it is a shame considering the amount of content.

It seemed as if Joanna didn't know what material to include in the final product and just decided to include, seemingly, every track recorded at the sessions.

My main problem with the album is too many rather weak tracks on a very long album. I just feel as a listener it is too excessive for its own good.

But what do I know? Many people might consider this album, which is one of my favorites of all time, excessive:

But the difference to me is that the end product was worth the time. I just feel short changed with Have One On Me.

Thoughts?

i love the globality of the album as i like a novel book, many stories included in one album, which is a pity is the production, mixing sucks and each time i listen to HOOM it hurts my ears, how an artist, musician like her, could released a non finished album? i mean the mix, but the artwork too, ok the cover is nice but paper is poor, booklet is indigent, only few pics, enveloppe to discs, am i the only one who the package suffer from time, travel? yeah i'm an oldschool girl who travels with her discs...

the content of HOOM is less excessive than ys, i can't stop loving each part of HOOM, even the few songs i think less interesting...

i really love each of joanna's records.

i don't see how any of what she puts out is excessive.

milk eyed mender was definitely a record of youth.
ys was 5 compact songs that were vivid and demanding, while still mysterious. (it's my favorite)
have one on me is powerful not only in its scope, but if you take your time with it, its revelations are extremely resonant and moving. i don't hear any weak tracks on have one on me -- maybe jackrabbits. i feel it was pertinent to the whole picture that every song was there.

certainly decadent, but not excessive.

her songs are so reflective of life... sure some songs are stronger than others, but you're kind of holding her to a ridiculous standard that 100% of her songs must be perfect. frankly, most of her songs are, which is a far, far higher success rate than most musicians ever come close to enjoying.

she's brilliant. and a few songs that aren't AS thrilling are still pretty damn stellar

I guess for me, it comes down to what is defined as "Excessive" when discussing art, creativity, music.

I see absolutely nothing excessive in Joanna releasing 3 CDs of original, new work. Make it 5 CDs,
make it 10...for me it still wouldn't be excessive if it is still her original art, creations, etc for us to experience.

I would deem it prolific, not excessive.

Excessive for me, when it comes to music releases is more about remastered editions, greatest hits, live albums that rehash greatest hits, etc

Okay...

My thread is meant to discuss an aspect I found in Joanna's latest album.

Then ribbonbows states that I am putting her to a high standard.

I am not. I am just responding as a listener. I don't have to consider every bit of work an artist does as brilliant. I am not devaluing the artist if she/he has released weak material throughout her/his career.

The thread gets derailed a bit by ribbonbows throwing a question I asked in which has nothing to do with my original question. I am still curious of your answer ribbonbows.

I am not looking for a "definition" of excessive in a general sense, but specifically to this album.

Just because someone is producing a lot of "original" work doesn't mean it discounts her/him from the material being excessive or lackluster.

It just seemed that my thread just opened up a praise-fest than an actual discussion.

bjork is the master of the excessive releasing  i love her but medulla was fast released and well...unnecessary, most of her new albums are quite excessive, and it that way i mean unnecessary albums, studio ones but GH, box, and such...
joanna isn't still in that way, i ever said what i think about HOOm i'm in love with this album than any others like so much MEM, like some songs of ys, but adore HOOM, i'd preferred production will be better it could sound smore "pro" as now i wait for pro joanna material (good artwork, audio best quality etc...no artistic value here)

To answer your question:

Do I think Have One On Me is excessive or lackluster? No. I also don't think Joanna went into the studio and recorded all these songs to whittle them down. I think the idea was to go into the record with all of the songs she had written. I have no qualms with any of the tracks -- they all move me in their own ways. I don't think I would've been happy with the record if it had less material on it.

I still feel like I am not answering this question well.

Perhaps to open this up more, what tracks do you think are excessive or lackluster?

Eureka, don't you think you should give the album your full attention before critiquing it? your position is weakened by the fact that you passed over songs that didn't immediately speak to you.
