Hi everyone. I'm pleased that several people have said 'yes' to the plan for a new JNST, and no-one has yet said 'Oh God - not that again'. So I will prepare something and get it ready to start in a couple of weeks, if that's OK with everyone.
Mishu - yes it's voting, but instead of just picking your favourites from the whole catalogue, we pool the songs into small groups or (ideally just) pairs, and each person selects one from each group/pair. The 'winners' from each pair progressed and are drawn into new pairs, and so it goes on, until we get to a final whose structure is yet to be determined.
What did people think of the way we did the final last time? (To refresh your memory - when we got down to 6 finalists, we paired them off in each possible combination, and so operated what we'd British people would call a "league" or "group basis" over here, or Americans might know best as a "round robin"; my apologies to other nationalities for not knowing how it would be termed, but I am sure you all get the idea!)
A very fair point, Weirdelves, and one that had certainly crossed my mind, hence my hesitancy about organising it.
I suppose it could be argued that one reason for doing it would be to have it as an annual event, and I think it was about March-May last year, so a similar timescale would be preferred if we were to have it. I was going to say that Classic FM run their "Hall of Fame" every year, and very little new classical music is composed, although that's a somewhat spurious argument since they cover film scores and other new music amongst the Beethovens and Mozarts.
Anyway, I'll do it if it's wanted, but if it's not I will not take it personally All comments - favourable or not - always welcome.
Weirdelves ... just make sure your next post is a good one! Don't waste no.1000!
I will definitely vote differently on quite a few songs. I also think that the tournament will work better now that things will be seeded more appropriately.
Steve, if you want help with anything, feel free to ask. In terms of the round robin, I think I liked the set-up. Maybe we could do more or less than six, depending on how the numbers are falling at the end of the tournament.
More than six at the end sounds good to me if not solely because that part goes on a little longer, then just to try and shake up the songs in the final set a little bit.
Yes, I think another song competition would be a good idea, because people will probably vote differently (I know my preferences have definitely changed over the last year), PLUS there are people (including me) who weren't around for the last one.
And he used to make me pray, wearing a mask like a death's head. When he put me there in the back seat, and he said, "Jesus save me, Jesus save me."
Oh man, I think the title track has to be the single best song I've ever heard. I've just been ravaged by it. I need to isolate myself from it for a few months, I think.
favourites: Have One on Me In California Autumn Soft as Chalk Baby Birch Kingfisher Esme
I think I may have come a bit late to the discussion, but I wanted to add in my favourites.
Esme - Because I only recently discovered Joanna I didn't have the older live versions to listen to first, which I think affects my view of the studio version. It is such a comforting song to listen to when I feel sad or down in any way. Esme is like a balm for the soul.
Kingfisher - I wasn't the biggest fan of it at first but after I heard that performance she recorded for the radio I really fell in love with the song. I particularly like the atom bomb section at the end.
Go Long - lyrically I find it really interesting, and the harp is gorgeous.
Hi everyone! It's my first time posting here and I thought it would feel right to start out with Have One On Me because, unlike quite a few of you I'm sure who have been around and known about Joanna for a good while, HOOM was how it all kicked off for me and I only listened to it for the first time about nine months ago.
I hope the newest album is not growing stale for anyone yet, it most certainly is not for me. I have a fairly established top five consisting mostly of
Have One On Me - what I tend to regard as my favourite song ever written. You and Me, Bess - the first time I read the lyrics to this song my jaw dropped and I thought I'd never come across such a poem Kingfisher - I still feel I have so many pieces to pick from this Go Long - you all know In California - I didn't know 'till recently that the state flag of California was of a bear (perhaps not living in the States has something to do with it) and knowing the California Gold Bear no longer exists in the state makes the mention of the black bear more meaningful to me for some reason...
Esme, Easy and No Provenance are also usually contesting for a glory spot, I can add. The story twisting along from the title track to '81 to Good Intentions Paving Company to No Provenance is her story-telling at its very best, I think.
I'm as always looking forward with joy to how this album develops in my mind over time, and it's comforting knowing I will love it forever
Welcome, Solfatara - and congratulations on a great name!
Interesting to read your comments on HOOM, for - as you say - most of us were familiar with her work before it came out, whereas it was your starting point. It would also be interesting to know how you find her other work - especially MEM - having first been introduced via HOOM. (Plug, plug ... you;re welcome to contribute to the Song Tournament in the Right-On thread ... it's a bit slow right now, with the obscure stuff, but should 'get going' properly next week!)
Strangely - or perhaps not - your preferences in HOOM are not so very different from the ones that I'd have chosen, with four of your top five also being in my "best" list. The exception is You And Me, Bess, which I've never really been able to grasp, but I'm probably in the minority there anyway.
Thank you for the warm welcome! I must confess one of the reasons I was compelled to join the forum was the upcoming tournament; the last few weeks I have been making (ever-changing) song preference lists of her work and I wanted to quickly check if anyone else was doing the same thing - so I wound up here. Needless to say I will be taking part (though perhaps not in this first round). Good to know there are other people out here equally obsessed!
I hope I'm not going far too off-topic but I will respond briefly to your question about her other work. I only started listening to Milk-Eyed Mender, Ys and pre-MEM stuff about a month ago, but I think by this time I was so deeply convinced of her genius and so in love with all of HOOM that not liking anything else from her was extremely unlikely. I know many people complain about her voice on earlier albums but I love it, whatever form it takes. I will probably get around to submitting something at the Best Album thread because this is something I think about quite a lot and would like to discuss with people more in-depth.
Regarding You And Me, Bess, it can seem quite a few people share your opinion and I can kind of understand why. At the moment I think, theme-wise, this song (perhaps coupled with Jackrabbits) is the one diverging most clearly from the rest of the album. It's a bit like a chapter thrown in from a different book for me, or a very long (David Foster Wallace-esque) footnote perhaps. I love it mostly for its narrative, which I find very vivid and aesthetically disturbing. I also have a weak spot for the brass and harp development, and the introduction always sends a jolt of excitement through me - one of the strongest openings on the album I think!
It seems people have mixed feelings about No Provenance as well, which I initially regarded as slightly underwhelming, but now see as a massive turning point, if not apex, of the album, due to the lyrics mainly, which are both deeply troubling and at times tragically hilarious.
Thank you for your comments, and don't worry about going off topic. I don't think you were, and even if that was the case, I don't think anyone will mind - we're a welcoming bunch, I like to think.
You're spot on about No Provenance, too. I listen to HOOM a lot, (a LOT), but No Provenance and You and Me, Bess are the two I'm likely to skip; and if I don't skip them, I seem to mentally 'turn off' during them. But there's hope for me yet - I used not to like Kingfisher and Autumn all that much, and now Kingfisher is among my very best picks from this (or any other) album, and I'm very open to Autumn, too.
I wonder if people can be somehow 'classified' as to which songs they like the most/least, and whether there are groups of songs that are always favoured or not favoured...? That's a question for another day, maybe!
