"Have One On Me" is my absolute favorite song by Joanna Newsom. I love how it infuses a biographical narrative with emotional resonance. I am also addicted to the melody and the general musical execution of the piece. It's simply breathtaking!
Coming in as a close second for me is "In California." I still get choked up by her emotional candidness in that song.
Here are some other highlights for me (in no particular order):
"Easy" "'81" "Good Intentions Paving Company" "No Provenance" "Baby Birch" "Jackrabbits" "On a Good Day" "Kingfisher"
For me, the preference of songs on "Have One On Me" is as follows - with my favourites at the top, and roughly divided into groups, beginning with the stone-cold masterpieces, and ending with the 4 soungs that I've not properly warmed to yet (Occident is getting there, though!):
1 Baby Birch 2 Have One On Me 3 In California 4 Go Long -------------------------------------- 5 Good Intentions Paving Co. 6 Soft As Chalk -------------------------------------- 7 Does Not Suffice 8 Esme 9 Easy 10 '81 11 On A Good Day -------------------------------------- 12 Ribbon Bows 13 Kingfisher -------------------------------------- 14 Jackrabbits -------------------------------------- 15 Occident 16 Autumn 17 No Provenance 18 You And Me, Bess
this is THE performance of Emse, for me atleast. everything falls into place perfectly in this performance, and the way her voice cascades out so smoothly at the first "I.... " is beyond description. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sL0T1yUYkbs
it's amazing how much i've listened to this song, yet every time is a different experience. it's always thoroughly rewarding, yet the reward is just as changing as the songs' meanings to me. recently i've come to really appreciate "you and me, bess" especially for the line, "my heart made the sound of snow falling from eaves." good god.
After spending six months listening to this album, I think I've finally decided on Kingfisher and Go Long as my favorites.
Kingfisher was actually my least favorite of the three tracks Drag City released before the album came out. I guess it just took a while to reveal itself to me. I'm completely in love with it now. I was listening to it while I was walking around the other day and it stopped me in my tracks.
I love No Provenance and '81 now. The only song I don't love is Esme. Like others have said, live renditions ruined for me. I like it, though. This album is phenomenal.
Hmm I really love Esme. For me I guess the only one I have issues with is Ribbon Bows. I mean there's nothing wrong with it, but it just doesn't deal with anything I find particularly interesting, nor does it hold much for me musically or lyrically. Although 'the crowd gathers round like an electric storm' is a fucking gorgeous line.
I love baby birch, and I always have. GIPC, Easy, and Soft as Chalk make me think of Kenny. I think No Provenance is one of my favorites, as is Kingfisher. Autumn is pretty, but nothing sticks out to me, you know what I'm sayin?
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
Maybe In California, maybe Have One On Me. I'm completely in love with the crescendo of Have One On Me, especially the lines, "I saw a star fall into the sky like a chunk of thrown coal, as if God Himself spat like a cornered rat. I really want you to do this for me, will you have one on me? Helpless as a child when you held me in your arms and I knew that no other could ever love me." That's a pretty big bit to be specific about, I know, but I love the flow of it, the rhythm and the pulse, and the imagery in that first line just makes me melt. As if God Himself spat like a cornered rat! Oh! And I love In California because of the way all of its disparate parts just melt into eachother. It's like a movie, with the scene changing seamlessly between a few plots or locations, and the flurry of the woodwind when she sings, "I have torn my soul apart by pulling artlessly with fool commands" is completely soul-purging.
