I heartily agree that comedy is a form of art, and I've never seen anyone who seems more like they consciously embrace that philosophy than Stewart Lee. His routines are meticulously constructed, with coherent themes running through them, and the way he manipulates tension in the room is masterful. Nothing else I've seen compares.
Well, that's the thing - you kinda need to see a whole routine to get it properly, he's not really one for sound bites. They are available online by various means (please do buy a DVD or something from his website if you enjoy it, though, he's not one of those big corporate gig type comedians) - 41st Best Stand-Up Ever would probably be a good place to start, and is a sample.
So, you're a firm believer in the current notion that art is only created by those who work to satisfy only themselves? Then, what of the so-called art that was created for the patrons of the so-called artists who worked prior to the 20th Century? What of Rembrandt, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Vermeer, and thousands of others who labored their lives away making beautiful things for people who were willing to pay?
They didn't know us; we weren't their intended audience. They didn't create those things for us. And it would be worth remembering that sometimes their art was compromised by the demands of their patrons - Shakespeare's propagandising for the House of Tudor, for instance (not that I think it rendered his plays worthless, but it did set parameters within which he had to work; Macbeth couldn't have been anything but a despicable villain, for instance). It's also worth remembering that art and beauty are not the same thing. The Grand Canyon is beautiful, but it is not a work of art. Whatever we take from it is born in our minds, not in the intention of any creator. Likewise, the art of pre-modern artists has been reinterpreted in its new social context. It's not the art that it was when it was painted; at least, that which has continued to speak to us isn't.
It's not so much that I believe that art is only created by those who work to satisfy themselves as much as that I believe that art is best created by those who don't create it with anyone in mind. Artistic vision is clouded by a concern for how its products will be received. I would hate to think that anyone with tremendous talent and a great deal to offer the world would be put off by the feeling that they would be unappreciated or unacknowledged, or worse, that they would water down their art to make it more palatable to contemporary sensibilities. Art is not democratic; it's seven billion autocracies.
