How the heck have I managed to stay, as far as I know, 3/4 Scottish and 1/4 Irish!? Everyone else is like 10/10/10/10/10/10/10/10/10/10, I'm 75/25. There must be something else in there... One of my great grans was called Wilhelmina, that's got to be German or Danish or something, surely?
Okay, so I signed up for the free trial on Ancestry.com to look into it.
Not only am I 3/4 Scottish, 1/4 Irish - everyone else as far back as the 1770s on both sides is Scottish - we've married into the same clan twice.
._.
Though my great-great-great-great-grandfather founded a colony in Ontario. That's kinda cool. But before that we moved less than 20 miles from the village where the clan originated. Three quarters of my ancestors have basically all come from the same fairly small area of Scotland for the last 300 years.
It's worse than I thought! So far, all I know for sure is that I'm 3.125% Irish, 96.875% Scottish. I think I may be as Scottish as it's physically possible to be. Duncan begat Duncan begat Donald begat Alexander begat James begat Ronald begat Alexander begat Alexander (me). Daniel begat Patrick begat Edward begat Phillip begat Maureen begat Rhonda begat Alexander (me). On the plus side, none of us had slaves! Hurray!
But my uncle's going to phone my dad to tell him what he can remember about my gran's parents and grandparents. Some of them are meant to have come from Ireland, but there doesn't appear to be any record of them at all.
"we've married into the same clan twice." , glad you're not dumb! i'm sorry to have put you into an ancestors scariness alex! be glad to be scottish! scot is william wallace, conan doyle, sean connery, susan boyle ! in fact i really love scotland and always think about it as a cool country (better than regular england, those footballs, bear, lover with big teeth and pink face) no offense to you tommy
William Wallace's surname is from "Waleis", meaning "Foreigner" and used in Old English to refer to the Welsh; Arthur Conan Doyle's father was English born and of Irish descent; Susan Boyle's parents were both from County Donegal in Ireland. Literally no one else in Scotland is actually from Scotland. I am significantly more Scottish than any of those people. ._.
It's not like I'm ashamed of it, it's just that it's so plain! It's almost so plain as to be exceptional. Does anyone else in the world have so many ancestors from such a small area? I want some variety, something exciting! There's a possible bigamist and a man who founded a colony on my dad's side, which is quite interesting, and the family mysteriously becomes far more wealthy after Alexander McLaren (the first, I think) marries a woman called Isabella Whyte, whose father James lived with them until his death. He named his son, my great-great-grandfather, James Whyte McLaren after him. I wish I could find more about him, there's something weird about it.
There is one branch of the family left to explore! Perhaps two, if we can get my great grandfather's birth certificate. I want three Arabs, a Russian Empress, a Brazilian murderer, some gypsies, hitherto unknown Jewish matrilineal descent, a poet, a soldier, some homeless people and some Chinese or Japanese. Wilhelmine Coburn, your ancestors better have gotten around the block.
gypsies rock Björk genealogy shows she's 100%icelandic pure for 1000years , it brokes now as she got a child with an american, but glad to god, she had an other child with an icelandic man!! begamist sonds good, but it's not very unusual in celtic area nope? can't imagine how the cinema around braveheart in scotland as he's finaly welsh...
Dad's side: Cherokee, Irish, German and some Oklahoman native tribe I cannot remember the name of. Mom's side: Irish, other unspecified Western European, a tiny bit of Cherokee, and I have no idea what else.
Those aren't Canadian roots, those are the roots of Canada. They were born in Scotland and emigrated, died in Canadian colonies named after towns in their area. They left family behind in Scotland, from whom I'm descended.
Years ago I read that, although the Navajo Nation has more registered members, it is the that would be the largest if all who claim descent were able to register.
