That's not so! There's procedurally generated content (in games like Dwarf Fortress, what is programmed is the rules to create a world, not the world itself), there's emergent gameplay, and there's user-generated content. The game engine imposes constraints, yes, but there are constraints on what can happen in the real world, too (admittedly much looser ones).

And that refers to only a few sorts of games. Some, you play for the story - they're like an interactive film, where you may have some measure of control over the plot.

Qug they keep yer brain active and supple, something that helps when u pass 50. i started out playing "games" very early on, Avalon Hill games came in a box, they took a lot of strategy and manipulation of game pieces...now it is possible to do those sort of games without all the pieces and across the world with other players. Video games started out like Pong, light blips going back and forth across the screen with controlled paddles u moved to bounce the light blip back into the field of play, then with the advent of desktop computers we got asci text games(try Zork sometime) and text based games like Muddywaters(some of my base code still alive there) and today u can enter a virtual world, buy a plot of land, build yerself a home, raise kids and defend it from all manner of fantastic creatures...or enter a twitch fest game where the whole world is trying to kill u...and watch everything in living color. The possibilities are endless and coming at u everyday in new forms, it can get boring at times(see grinding) but it will keep u busy....

Since about the age of 45 I've had trouble with a lot of video games causing me to experience what seems like motion sickness. Whether I'm playing, or just watching someone else play, I become nauseous, dizzy, and sweaty from the random jerky movements. One type of game that doesn't bother me at all is racing. I bought an XBOX 360 for my sweety and I to share. It's the Star Wars XBOX 360 that looks like R2D2. Anyway, she plays her adventure games, and I play Forza 4, using the Wireless Speed Wheel. I love it!!!
