Upon the seas of Galilee Isis sang this ode of we,
"son,my sons those cherub lips in smile my stars they do eclipse,
Of all the shades ive lived to see I lust your hairs mahogany those cheeks ablush as pink tulips the music in your lilting lipse.
Ive watched your days in far domains with wil' o wisps on thundered planes, I saw you breathe the sirocco upon the cliffs of Morocco shelter urchins, drink the snow with the dogs of Colombo.
Youve courted prophet and Pharaoh danced the walls of Jericho, tarantella, flamenco such elegance your bolero,
So sprightly spun your fandango within the caves of Calypso, and it was I,upon Io with whom you flowed in fair tango.
In my youth, aeons ago from my crib in far Virgo, through my lens I watched you grow a beacon bright so far aglow,
By my side sighs Osiris who wishes for your hand and kiss for many years he broods amiss my velvet hands may grant him this,
You know my brethren, whorling Shiva twice be- limbed the morning weaver, in her soul you cast a fever knew not Hera or Godiva,
In the trills of every diva she sings of you,the light da vita the spines of earth she did cleaver so your dreams would never leave her.
Even my foe Mazandarin blushes at your flawless skin, as china white porcelain the feathers of the seraphim,
The moon above, our mandarin the masters and the mannikin do wrestle from their soulless din to hear your lyre and mandolin,
Regulus,Mesarthim Arcturus and all akin shall shelter you neath their wing through time theyl grant you everything.
Oh my sons a thousand ships will come to sail you to my lips I long the locking of our hips of your nectars I shall sip,
From Eden to apocalypse your mortal kin you do eclipse but to your gaze, my heartbeat skips but to your touch my dress it slips,
One day a 1000 shining ships on your horizons blue ellipse one day a thousand sailing ships will come to bring you to my lips.
I just think it's amazing how much Plato sounds like an old codger complaining about "anarchic" music at any time in history - jazz, rock and roll, rock, punk, rap, grunge; and before that I suppose the classical composers who were controversial in their time. Yeah, the Greeks were all about form and structure and reason and mathematics. I'd like to have heard some of the music Plato's talking about - the only music that survives from Ancient Greece is hymns, which were probably some of the most conservative of the lot. It'd be nice to know what Ancient Greek alternative music sounded like - some of the religious songs strike you as being a bit, well, properly made but soulless.
When I was studying classical Greek tragedy last year my tutor played us a recording of some people re-interpreting some of the Delphic hymns or something and it sounded pretty good to me. Lots of harmonising and a surprisingly throaty percussion given what wuzzy's saying.
I really enjoy listening to traditional cultural musics from various cultures. In Scandinavia, there is a style of singing called Kulning that was originally used as a cattle all. But I think it is very beautiful. Also, there were Galdr, a ritual chant sung in a falsetto. But hymns can be so boring and tedious. Even the prose edda and the havamal are boring. I suppose that it difficult to read things translated from ancient languages. I think it would be really interesting to listen to the young people's music of yore. unrelated note, I reallyreallyreally love mittelalter music. Seriously love it. I have never really studied any music in a traditional setting. Nor have I studied anything from before around 1100 C.E. I like Hildegard Von Bingen. And I have that Chant Cd of the benedictine monks. very interesting.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
That's where the story gets more complicated. They also felt that men were better suited to intellectual pursuits than women, so all that intellectual music - melody, the lyre, etc. - was a male thing. Percussion instruments were relegated to women because they felt that "exotic" things and exoticism was more feminine. It leads into this whole discussion about later imperialism and the idea that the far East was an exotic/feminine place. It's really weird.
I'm not saying there wasn't any percussion - though it may have sounded like I did - just that they felt it wasn't intellectual/pure/true. It was a "girl thing."
There's also a theory that Orpheus was a real person. Apparently the Orpheus myth contains a lot of details that are common in shamanic traditions - a journey to the underworld/afterlife, dancing/music, a rescue - so it's possible that he was actually a person, and a shaman at that. It's suggested that he is the one who brought shamanic practices from Africa back to Greece, but substituted some elements with others to make it more appealing to the intellectualism of the Greeks (again, melody over rhythm, lyre over drums, passivity over participation). It was also the origin of the idea of the healing power of music through simply perceiving it, versus African traditions of music's healing power through participation/trance-dancing. REALLY CRAZY STUFF.
