Forgive the term "Joannic", without it the thread title wouldn't fit. This is a thread which could belong to Right On, This Is Not My Tune or The Fray; so it's in The Fray. Basically, post the lyrics of Joanna, another musician, or a non-musical poet or author which fill you with enthusiasm and inspiration for whatever reason, and perhaps briefly explain why if you want to. I'll go first!
"So you were born, and that was a good day. Some day you will die and that is a shame. But somewhere in the between you lived a life of which we all dream, and nothing and no one will ever take that away.
Well someday soon, my friends, this ride will come to and end, and we can't just get in line again."
From Streetlight Manifesto's Somewhere in the Between; a very positive memento mori for once. Not just a, 'You're going to die, it sucks', but a reminder than in the meantime you're alive and it matters, explicitly expressed rather than left implicit in the yellowed bones of a dead whale, and requiring no spectacle to make its point other than the cacophony of trumpets and the singer's own sincerity.
"No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be; Am an attendant lord, one that will do To swell a progress, start a scene or two, Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool, Differential, glad to be of use, Politic, cautious and meticulous; Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse; At times, indeed, almost ridiculous — Almost, at times, the Fool." T. S. Eliot, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.
When we were reading Hamlet in class, my smart-ass frenemy pointed out that I was a lot like Hamlet at the time - full of (imagined) problems and lacking the decisiveness required to solve them, and consequently making hasty, forced decisions that seemed to lead to my own destruction. But Eliot writes, presumably, from a similar perspective - feeling that one is the Prince when one reads Hamlet - and suggests that the read is "not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be" - it's a kind of reminder that none of our problems are 'central to the plot', that we're not the 'main character', that our affairs occur off-stage and aren't dictated by the rules of high drama. We play simple bit parts in life and we can run our own affairs without the interference of Shakespeare.
"...while I wait all night, for you, in California, watching the fox pick off my goldfish from their sorry, golden state— and I am no longer afraid of anything save the life that, here, awaits."
From In California, as if you couldn't recognise it. She captures so brilliantly the feeling of being a prisoner in one's own home and the sense of outstaying your own welcome when the duration is yours to decide. Particularly striking is the play on words in "sorry, golden state", which can be read as the sad, domesticated state of the goldfish (with which the speaker sympathises, albeit detachedly) and as "sorry, Golden State", referring more generally to the state of California, or, to the reader, home. Equating the two so concisely expresses her desire for something more than the placid domesticity of life at home, for the "wonder and the sorrow [she has] seen, since [she] left her [home]". Maybe I'm projecting: It's something I feel keenly, the desire to get away from home, safe and comforting as it is, and experience 'the real world' again, with all its wonders and sorrows.
I don't know if you guys like Marilyn Manson, (and this is going to sound really lame) but I really like the song 'Tourniquet".
"She's made of hair and bone and little teeth ( and things that cannot speak she comes on like a crippled plaything her spine is just a string
I wrapped our love in all this foil Silver tight like spider legs I never wanted it to ever spoil but flies will always lay their eggs
Take your hatred out on me Make your victim my head You never ever believed in me I am your tourniquet" Marilyn and I have a lot in common, really. I try so hard to make everything perfect, like Marilyn, but it always comes out wrong. I made Kenny a bracelet of hair, and he was repulsed and threw it away.
From "Another Song about Jesus, a Wedding Sheet, and a Bowie Knife" By Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots
"Someone says I’m hard –but I’m never hard enough for you. Especially when you take your sewing needle and scratch a mark on your wrists, especially when you take your sewing needle and scratch a mark on your ankles, especially when you take your sewing needle and close up that hole in our sheet, then you use this sheet to wipe away your inside – Now our sheets it’s got a red hue, our sheet it’s got this stiffness, now our sheet is growing twice growing, the iron from your inside it re-opened up that hole yes, it did rust it your blood it rusted, your iron it rusted your iron is rusting–now everything is rusting and everything will rust for you as well-" Love and rituals are never enough for me. During any time of intense emotion, I cut. Always, even if that emotion is happiness. From 'Stumpside" by Rasputina "Animals like me though folks turn away I like the pigeons I like what they say" I have so much trouble relating to people. I get along with animals better.
And as far as Joanna goes, CCCC is the song I can relate to the most. I take from it a feeling of loneliness when surrounded by people, and that's how I have always felt, for as long as I can remember. So, yeah.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
my favorite poet posted this today - 1/11/11 a mystical day
Wildseed by John Trudell
ancestoral living memoried outlines tracing today into many parts of the always beens the seeds of life, chances to reseed agains some wild seed, wildseed is what we need
global warmings climate change accelerate in a world feels like its running out of breath the land is feeling the heat it can’t get use to and the sky keeps needing room to breathe
burning bridges in thrown cautions to the wind middled in waiting for a hard rains going to fall don’t know what to do doesn’t know what to do after believe believed its way into some things now it doesn’t know how to believe its way out
the human beings turned into the human race then the human race raced faster than it could the progressive race in an aggressive hurrying life into discardings, used ups, and destroyeds
then comes a time for things to start looking up in the graying black and whites its time to color planting the earth in wild seed greens and hues time for those deepening roots holding together
the future through the past and earth to the sky somewhere in the balance and energy of reality watching our step when we step where we step is a way of seeing what we’re doing as we do it
living the wearing out of lives in over our heads sow what we reap before we reap what we sow could be better offs way of making things better today is as good a day as any for remembering
the earth and the people and how to live together and wild seed to help heal the spirit heal the land planting seed into crops of plant energy as basics for fuel, food, shelter, clothing, and cleaner oxygen
"It was dark; I was drunk and half-dead, and we slept, knocking heads, sitting up in the star-smoking air, knocking heads like buoys.
Don't you worry for me! Will you have one on me?
Meanwhile, I will raise my own glass to how you made me fast and expendable; and I will drink to your excellent health, and your cruelty. Will you have one on me?
—helpless as a child, when you held me in your arms, and I knew that no other could ever love me"
here, The song with which I feel the most connected. 'another song about jesus, a wedding sheet, and a bowie knife.' by munly. Someone needs to take a rusty Bowie knife to you - from your groin to chest-bone, spill the truth. That way you might touch your inside like I has to, like you always make me do- Someone spaded Jesus Christ through skin meat and bone- the iron from the spike it starts that rustin', the iron from His blood add to that rustin'-
His blood rolls down the hill and pools up in the cotton-field, well the cotton it be twice growin'- and it is cherished for it's red red hue, and it is marveled for it's stiffness, and it is revered for its twice growin' ...growin’ up out the earth growin’ back into the earth to be spat back out the mool be twice growin like Jesus Christ will -to return like Jesus Christ
Centuries has passed and I met you, you love me, Christ girl, you know how much you love me – Someone made for us this wedding sheet, one side of the sheet will it be the man side, the other side of the sheet will it be the woman’s side –
I fit myself into the pre-made hole in this wedding sheet, when I lay down on top of you- Someone says I’m hard –but I’m never hard enough for you. Especially when you take your sewing needle and scratch a mark on your wrists, especially when you take your sewing needle and scratch a mark on your ankles, especially when you take your sewing needle and close up that hole in our sheet, then you use this sheet to wipe away your inside –
Now our sheets it’s got a red hue, our sheet it’s got this stiffness, now our sheet is growing twice growing, the iron from your inside it re-opened up that hole yes, it did rust it your blood it rusted, your iron it rusted your iron is rusting–now everything is rusting and everything will rust for you as well-
and then "Fake yer death' by orion rigel dommisse, faking one's own death to spend time with one person. 'Should our little crime go amiss Shall they see the bodies are not flesh? We wait until they're buried
Until we rest, my love, until we rest
And we can hide in the room like we've always wanted to To work on what we love, to work on what we love We won't tell anyone we're not dead, so We can hide away to work on what we love
Until we rest, my love, until we rest'
that's all for now.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
And it can have no bounds, you know It can have no end You can take my hand in the darkness, darling When you need a friend And it can change in shape, or form But never change in size The water, it runs deep, my darling Where it don't run wide
I love this so much. Reminds me that I have enough to give even if it can't be given. Easy to forget that it's ok to give and not recieve.
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
"And then a slow lip of fire Moves across the prairie with precision While somewhere with your pliers and glue You make your first incision And in a moment of almost unbearable vision Doubled over with the hunger of lions 'Hold me close', cooed the dove Who was stuffed now with sawdust and diamonds" never understand if it's an apology of love or cruelty, it's lost into my english mist and never want to clarify it as love and cruelty are extremely close to me.
all jackrabbits too but especially the beginning
"I was tired of being drunk My face cracked like a joke So I swung through here Like a brace of jackrabbits With their necks all broke
I stumbled at the door with my boot I knocked against the jamb I scrabbled at your chest, like a mute With my fists of ham Trying to tell you That I am telling, I can I can love you again Love you again
I'm squinting towards the East" i feel the same weariness, something as a routine you applied, the same pitifull act, and this obsession with the east i have each time i feel fragile, not the same interpretation as hers of course but, how i madly work on my eastern movie, my east tattoo etc...
"How could I be so immature ? To think he could replace The missing elements in me How extremely lazy of me" Björk
it's just me, it's the biggest pb of my life and my day to day dissapointing, i could apply those lyrics in each part of my life, friends, love, job, ecology etc...but i ever dealt with this song in an other thread
His broad clear brow in sunlight glow'd; On burnish'd hooves his war-horse trode; From underneath his helmet flow'd His coal-black curls as on he rode, As he rode down to Camelot. From the bank and from the river He flashed into the crystal mirror, "Tirra lirra," by the river Sang Sir Lancelot.
She left the web, she left the loom, She made three paces through the room, She saw the water-lily bloom, She saw the helmet and the plume, She look'd down to Camelot. Out flew the web and floated wide; The mirror crack'd from side to side; "The curse is come upon me," cried The Lady of Shalott.
In the stormy east-wind straining, The pale yellow woods were waning, The broad stream in his banks complaining. Heavily the low sky raining Over tower'd Camelot; Down she came and found a boat Beneath a willow left afloat, And around about the prow she wrote The Lady of Shalott.
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
My antony and the Johnsons contribution of the day
Do not waste a thought behind you Don?t pity useless clay Snake, snake, shed your skin Shed your skin and go away, away Leave behind your shadows memory Leave me, this is your day
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
squint skyward and listen - loving him, we move within his borders: just asterisms in the stars' set order
we could stand for a century starin' with our heads cocked in the broad daylight at this thing joy landlocked in bodies that don't keep dumbstruck with the sweetness of being till we don't be
Does it get any better really
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream When I want you in my arms When I want you and all your charms Whenever I want you, all I have to do is Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
When I feel blue in the night And I need you to hold me tight Whenever I want you, all I have to do is Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam
I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine Anytime night or day Only trouble is, gee whiz I'm dreamin' my life away
I need you so that I could die I love you so and that is why Whenever I want you, all I have to do is Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam
I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine Anytime night or day Only trouble is, gee whiz I'm dreamin' my life away
I need you so that I could die I love you so and that is why Whenever I want you, all I have to do is Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream Drea-ea-ea-ea-eam, dream, dream, dream
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
I still believe it's you and me 'til the end of time
When we collide we come together If we don't we'll always be apart I'll take a bruise; I know you're worth it When you hit me hit me hard
and this it fits perfect but it makes me laugh when I listen to the song
I know there's nothing to say Someone has taken my place When times go bad When times go rough Won't you lay me down in tall grass And let me do my stuff
I know I got nothin' on you I know there's nothing to do When times go bad And you can't get enough Won't you lay me down in the tall grass And let me do my stuff
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
