Calamus Root Magician is a long-time fan of Newsom. For a guy who ranks her in a tie with Madlib for the title of most relevant popular musician of the 21st century, a remix project was inevitable.
The Murthering Stake, a twenty-minute, quasi hip-hop tribute project, has been delivered safely:
It is done in good taste, and out of a genuine appreciation for Joanna Newsom's work. If the idea intrigues you, you should check it out. If it discomfits you, you should avoid it. (Also, if you hate vinyl LP pops . . .)
Peace.

This doesn't strike me as being hip-hop...whatever that means. But, regardless of style, I like it! It's one of just a few remixes of her music that I could stand to listen to in toto. Great job! More of the same would be welcome.
Two tracks in and really loving it. It's a really intelligent love letter to her music and it's obvious that you know your way around the music and have an understanding of it that I haven't heard in that many remixes or covers of her work. Really great stuff, I'll write again when I've heard the whole thing.
Listened to it a couple times through my big speakers now. I have a few bits I don't like but overall it's really fantastic. Especially love the treatments of (so far) Peach Plum Pear (which is not one of my favourites on MEM), Sawdust and Diamonds, Kingfisher, and the Does Not Suffice mix is my favourite at the momentl. Brilliant. And the quotes from interviews are genius.
The only bit I can isolate that I'm really not so keen on is the zapgun-only skin bit. Not so sure of that whole section. One of the few parts where I don't really see the connection with the music, don't feel it realyl improves or changes the original in any positive way. But then it goes into Cosmia and Have One On Me (geniusss) it's all good.
Oh and the last track is so good.
Shit I know I'm being really incoherent but I've just never heard anything this good done with JN's music. So blown away.
On repeated listens I seem to have calmed down slightly, got a little enthusiastic I guess. I find it on the whole quite up and down, clearly a labour of love indeed and it's very well made for something that (I assume) is all done from home and stuff. Love the takes on PPP, Does Not Suffice, Sawdust, Cosmia and Baby Birch; the Colleen, Only Skin, Kingfisher and other things leave me slightly wanting something more or different I guess. It's a really great achievement though, so well done.
I really appreciate all the positive and critical feedback on The Murthering Stake that has come from this forum. It's refreshing to touch base with a group of fans who understand the scope of this project and can identify, from the chops, the songs I cut up. Since I posted up here, the project's caught a lot of hits and downloads, and that was the point: to get it out there so people (especially people as enchanted as I am by those three albums) can enjoy a re-imagining of these records.
