I'm on holiday

PostPosted: 01 Aug 2010, 01:37

So I thought this might be a good idea for a thread. We're a worldly bunch, so surely if I'm going on holiday there will be someone on the forum in that place with some good ideas on where to go.

So anyway I'm in San Fransisco and I'll be here for 12 days. Any ideas?

Feel free to ask about cities of your choice. (I will only answer to ones about London or remote south-western Irish towns)

travvy, during my short stay in Italy one of the things i enjoyed most was eating at small wine stores, they bring out a jar of this and a bit of that, and wham you have a meal...and some grappa of course. u will know u are in the place when they have a table to sit and eat at inside the place...ummm open markets in market towns and lotsa churches to see there...and the Alps!!!!!!...ahh my first sight of the alps coming down a German autoban. i literaly had to pull over, stop, and just take that sight in...sigh...if i never go back i will always hold that memory dearly in my head...and if u go to Florence(how can u go to Italy and not go to Florence)eat lots of gellato and rub the pigs nose in the square(the wish granting bronze pig in the city square-means u will return one day)

I loooove the pictures. <3

I used Google Translate and even though I know it's probably terribly inaccurate, the writing paints a beautiful picture too!

I'm not crazy about Turkish food. It's one of those cuisines that's all about the meat. Italian and Indian food are great because there are so many vegetarian dishes that aren't just meat dishes with the meat conspicuously left out or replaced.

middle eastern food is the best. but jordy is right, Indian food is the best. I had the best indian food of my life in Copenhagen.

I've never even had proper Indian food, really, only Anglo-Indian. Indian food in India is quite different, I understand.
Italian food is so wonderful. Everything is cheese and mushrooms and bread and tomatoes and cream. How can you possibly beat pizza except by adding more bread and cheese?

haha, i never was into italian food, for me, it's like maghreb food, it's my childhood food, the way i cook, indian is exotic but asian is by far more exotic. There is this cheap thaï restaurant where we often go, it really taste like thailand, i can't judge :) but, thai addict, and a thai wife told me is the best, and well, it's sooo good and fresh and 10€ for a plate, that's makes me loving life!

My mum cooks Thai, sometimes, but I'm not really that keen on it. I have a terrible sweet tooth - it's pandemic in the cities of the Scottish lowlands: because we were so poor for two hundred years, the only things we ate were things that kept for a long time, so that we could stock up when times were good, plus because of the Empire sugar was quite cheap and a good source of energy during the bad times. So the food my gran cooks is stuff like semolina, rice pudding, macaroni cheese, etc. - all very sweet - and that's the food that most Scottish people grew up with. Now that we can afford to eat well all the time, the habit persists, hence our terrible health problems. I love sweet savoury foods. Whenever me and my parents go out with my dad's cricket friends for a curry, they make fun of me and him because our curry is like a dessert - all cream and banana and stuff. :P
And I just love cheese and bread. If I had to pick two things to eat for the rest of my life, they'd be cheese and bread.
