Hi and thank you to all the admins for looking into it.
Yes - I do get anti-span questions about 25% of the time (just "retype this number" thingies). The time-out thing can be very annoying if you've typed a big reply, because as soon as you're timed out, you know there's no way to get it back. The BACK button doesn't restore it. I suppose it's my own fault for spending too long on a single response, or not typing it in Word and then pasting (but then formatting becomes more of a nuisance). Simple answer is to do a COPY beforehand, but you have to remember to do it before you hit SUBMIT.
Anyway ... the fact that I've written all this will probably help me to remember! Thanks once again for checking.

We could always ask Lina if she could remove the time out. The spam filter's quite useful, I guess.

Problems with the site:
- I have to log in every time
- Logging in takes you away from the thread you were on
- Bookmarks log you out because the site depends on the sessionid stored in the URL

I have to do that on this computer, but not on my desktop. Strange.

I suspect it's connected to storing the session id in the URL. If there is an option to turn that off, it may help. It's generally considered bad practice anyway for security reasons.

Unfortunately we as admins don't have the powers to tamper with the innards of the forum, and the girl who's in control of everything is AWOL. Nothing to be done until she makes her reappearance. Sorry.

We've had nothing from Lina for over a year, we're just unfortunately powerless when it comes to things above the day to day running of the forum.

I meant the name-tag that shows in italics or in bold to show online or offline. Also ... when I am typing (like now) down at the bottom of the screen, below this box and POSTREPLY button and all those controls, there's a panel that says:

WHO IS ONLINE

I wonder whether Ann and the other moderators see this, and if they do, whether their own names appear there? Maybe that would give us a clue as to whether their log-in status is somehow different to ours as normal users.

Anyway - on another topic:
The advertising postings were fun to begin with, but they are getting a bit tiresome, aren't they. I presume they are real people, not bots, because they'd have to answer a security question (type in these distorted numbers etc). So I wonder whether another barrier could be put up which prevents anyone posting within say the first 24 hours after registering. It may discourage a few genuine contributors, but I suspect it would cut out most of the adverts. I looked at Yanghugh, who registered and then within about 4-5 minutes posted three adverts, making new threads each time, which does clog up the site. If this is too draconian, then what about a restriction on starting new THREADS within a certain period, and/or making the security question something JN related?

We can do that quite easily, I think, and it's a good idea. Thanks Steve, I'll start a thread in the top-secret moderator forum about it!

It's ok, Steve. Although I had to return the original, I made a copy of the Moderator's Package that was sent out to everyone who was being considered for the position. It clearly states in paragraph 12, sub-paragraph G that if asked about the "secret moderators' forum", the only acceptable answer is an emphatic denial of its existence.
