I regret to tell that I couldn't finish the book and, finally, returned it to the library.

Let me ask:

1) does the word "postmodern" imply that there will always be successive, new "modern"s? How could it?, unless it means the definition changes--and, more important, it's instances (real-world examples)--with each new "modern"; or, does postmodern remain the same with successive "moderns"?

2) Does the book serve the purpose of support for Lyotard's politico-economic goal or goals?--instead of informing those goals?

The term 'postmodern' is chosen - adopted, I believe, from the arts - to indicate that what was previously defined in academic circles as modernity is coming to an end, much as modern art gave way to postmodern (e.g. pop) art. There is much rather pointless bickering about whether we should speak of post-modernity or of 'reflexive modernity' or whatever, but the basic idea is usually the same if different authors disagree over the details: something has been defined as modernity, and the world has changed qualitatively so that the term 'modernity' as defined no longer straightforwardly applies to it.

Lyotard's political and economic goals are not explicated in the book, nor did I detect an agenda of that sort. In general, he seems to be broadly in favour of postmodernity - subsequent authors have discussed, at considerable length, the implications of the postmodern condition for political economy.
