Ugg, I had to make this post. I generally try to keep my comments here (as minimal as they are) strictly focused on the music, avoiding more of the gossip-ish type conversations. This, however, was too appropriate not to post. BUT YES, cool on both of them. One of my coworkers who went to Berkeley High was friends with Andy and has nothing but good things to say about the dude.
So, this is a probably a strange view to have on it, and I wish Joanna all the best etc etc, but seeing as this is the internet, I'm going to be honest.
I wish she weren't getting married. I would say that with artists in general, being contentedly married in a happy relationship is not the best way to create good art. Most artists that I love do a lot of suffering, and I always have trouble thinking of them as married (although of course many are, e.g. thom yorke). Still, I always worry when this happens, because what if she becomes lame, like married people often do? If you don't feel any pain or suffer at all, what emotions will you have to express with music?
There's plenty of suffering to feel even for the happily married. "This is a world of terrible hardship everywhere, and I search for words to set you at ease."
I'd say that if the last 5 years of her music-making have been any indication, she's certainly not at a loss for material regardless of her successful and happy relationship. Yes, much of Have One On Me seemed inspired by events that transpired before Samberg came into the picture, but the two post-HOOM songs we've heard so far have been just as strong, beautiful, and complex as all of her other past efforts. To be honest, as a longtime lover of her art, I'm much more concerned about her strong desire to be a mother conflicting with the nomadic lifestyle her career has dictated (and potentially becoming the force behind a long hiatus from recording and performing).
Also, hi everyone! I've been a follower of this forum since the beginning (under various aliases), but almost never post.
Just because Joanna is getting married doesn't mean she won't have hardships in the future. And I agree with Jeannie about the part of being a mother. A lot of Joanna's work does center around the perspectives of a woman or just being a woman, which is one of my favorite things of her work.
yeah whats up wid that anyway...flippin light weight, anything could happen to Andy Qug, car wreck...alien abduction...i'm near 60 and married and i haven't dropped the torch (ooops did i say that outloud?)
gonna miss ya Qug
The thing i like best about deciphering Joanna's songs...i'm always wrong.
Yesterday evening I saw the first episode of of the English comedy series Cuckoo, starring Andy. It seems it was shown on BBC3 last Autumn, but is rerun now on BBC1. It was quite nice and he was "awesome"! I looked around for more information and found this interview http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/ ... bbc-sitcom, where Joanna is mentioned too:"...hung out in Notting Hill with his long-term girlfriend Joanna Newsom, who is probably the only person in the world who can be described as a famous harpist. Samberg sweetly ducks questions about her, describing her simply as "the best"."
