I went to the beach yesterday, and realized this morning that ever since hearing "You and Me, Bess" (when the album came out), I've been perceiving the piles of kelp and seaweed on the shore as entrails from the gut of the sea. It's not simply that the sight of said sea debris calls up the lyric inside my brain, but that Joanna's description is so perfect that it seems to have become a part of my conceptual framework... does that make any sense?
Then there are so many other examples of where I've developed a strong association with a word or phrase in one of Joanna's songs, so that when I hear it in everyday life, it often brings the lyric into my head. Like if I hear either "meteroid" or "meteorite", I can't help thinking "a bone thrown from the void", or hearing joanna's voice singing "a meteorite's just what causes the light" or other bits of the meteor/meteorite/meteoroid rhyme. I'd bet that associative prompting is pretty common among Joanna fans... although perhaps not for the astrophysicists among us who deal in meteors daily. But more common words get me too, if I hear someone say the word "treason", I often think, "But there is no treason where there is only lawlessness." And then, of course, a couple of seconds later, I can't help it: "Law-less-ness!" Or I walk by some bare winter trees and think "the bones of the birches"...
What are associations with Joanna's lyrics that crop up for you in daily life... in conversation or in perception or...?
So many things from Only Skin. These lines, almost every day when I come across spiders and wash them down the sink.
I have washed a thousand spiders down the drain spiders ghosts hang soaked and dangelin' silently from all the blooming cherry trees in tiny nooses, safe from everyone - nothing but a nuisance; gone now, dead and done be a woman, be a woman!
Sometimes its just one word that i wouldn't normally hear and while my brain attempts to filter the rest of the song from my imminent response, or find a part of that song that will work as a response, i probably spend a few too many seconds looking like a rabbit caught in some headlights
Thanks for sharing, everyone. It's nice to know there are other people out there with these song bits cycling through their heads... and, particularly, which ones stick. Although I'm sure we all have depths of Newsom lyrics that accompany us in life. It also makes me curious, imagining that, par example, Jessie: if you do that almost every day, you must live in a very spidery locale! And, urusulabear, if you're a hairdresser, it must be lovely to think of those lines in the midst of your work!
I accidentally fell asleep today listening to Ys (headphones on) - fell asleep somewhere at the end of Emily and beginning of Monkey & Bear, and woke up mid Sawdust & Diamonds. It was intense, that very groggy, disorienting feeling that can happen with unexpected afternoon naps, but with all of that music pouring into my subconscious, I felt like I'd slept for days and that part of me had been experiencing/witnessing all of the events in the songs. It was "...and the moment I slept I was swept up in a terrible tremor" that woke me up a bit, and it took me the rest of the song to remember where and who I was, instead of just "being" the song. This experience is apropos of nothing in the thread, except to say holy cow. Sawdust & Diamonds is not even really a song to me, it's some unnameable other thing - pure vision... and it was quite amazing to fall inside it like that. Almost like hearing her play it live, which I never have....
In my Biology exam there was a question on wildflowers, two of which were hollyhock & a flower called the cosmea. I couldn't get Ys out my head for the next 3 hours.
I keep having waking nightmares concerning any sort of collision, injury, or accident, accompanied by the line "my wrists and my waist seemed so easy to break".
On a happier note, I've captioned some photos with "This week's stunning sky is ...". Does anyone know whether this is a Joanna original? It's two commonplace words, set side-by-side, but had it been done before Cassiopeia?
