well just hoping the whole thing appears!!! i emailed karni and saul and they wrote that unlike rumors spread it was an official commissioned video.i guess drag wont release it for some reason. they wanted it out apparently and its finished.ahh well....just trying to find it.
dear Joanna fans who have been writing to us.first of all yes the video for good intentions was commissioned by drag city and finished. we are very proud of it.and everyone who sees it absolutely loves it.for various reasons that are not up to us drag city will not release this video.we are gutted.and apologies for letting anyone down.we believe it is a fab piece of film.and maybe one day it will see the light.thanks for your kind emails and for following us.best karni and saul"
we'll probably never know.the thing with artists and labels is, as far as i can tell, they seem to change their minds and are usually quite unstable.some of the best videos have been banned or unreleased. it looks stunning to me.
but....why ? at least when Björk cancel something, we have some explanation, and if she's thinking it's not fit the song either she can do an other one and let this one to the underground market, can't understrand why so much money and time and work is just thrown into garbage just cos of a "i don't like it anymore" if it's her decision, i'm reaaalllyy dissapointed by her lack of empathy to the people who work hard on it, and i know what i talking about....
I was just thinking the other day that music DVDs aren't generally released anymore, but a video of a concert by Joanna would be fantastic. I'm always amazed by the sound quality of YouTube videos of live gigs due to the silence of the audience and I think seeing something professionally made to capture her live performances would be amazing. She always puts a new slant on some of her well-loved songs, like the violins in "Peach Plum Pear" in the Paris gig and the guitar in "Soft as Chalk" in the same gig (one of my favourite bootleg live "albums").
Anyway, to the point... If there was a live DVD produced then perhaps the Good Intentions video would be an amazing extra? I kind of secretly hope that this is what Joanna and Drag City have in store, but I highly doubt it. I'd love to see the video.
I agree with Polliwog though. When everybody first started discussing the video release and the delay on it, then when the excerpt of the video came out, I felt that it would be Joanna who didn't want it to be released. But it's speculation related to the personality I believe she has. In all likelihood I am wrong. I just imagine that she's the sort of person who would pick apart seeing herself in a music video like that. It's a strange song to have a music video for anyway, well, the latter half of the song anyway. But fingers crossed it surfaces somewhere in the not-too-distant future. It would be epic.
I had always tended toward optimism until I spent a few years being a fan of Joanna. I now have almost no optimistic expectations for new music or videos by her. Don't misunderstand me. I still love her music. I have just lost hope of ever seeing what I wanted to see...a high quality recorded concert (sight and sound) that I could watch over and over and over. And, I suspect that it has more to do with Joanna than with anyone else.
It's obviously a bummer that the video will probably never see the light of day, but I don't really think it's fair to be mad at Joanna or Drag City about it. It's not like they announced that there would be a video and then changed their minds. The only news we ever heard about it came from the people who were involved in making it. Whatever the reason for not releasing it, it's their prerogative.
It's too late to be grateful It's too late to be late again It's too late to be hateful
You can't blame the label here. Drag City doesn't ask for that much control. If JN wanted it to be released, it would be released.
I'm guessing she simply didn't think it was right for her work. Regardless of whether a music video is good or not, its existence changes the music, in the same way that a film adaptation changes your experience of a book.
As for a high quality concert recording, her Warfield show with Philip Glass and Tim Fain was professionally recorded. I got to see a few minutes of footage at a later Philip Glass event at the Henry Miller Memorial Library. There was no word of the whole thing being released, but I really, really hope it someday is.
I understand Polliwog. It adds to the excitement when you do finally hear something new, then it's a bit of a rush from then on. I loved how Drag City handled the preview tracks to Have One on Me. They were perfectly spaced to give excitement and anticipation and once the album was released it was amazing.
Personally, I don't harbour any feelings of anger or upset about the music video. I've enjoyed what I've seen but I'm not a massive fan of music videos anyway. It gets in the way of my imagination when I listen to a song. Although I have seen some awesome music videos in the past - a video for Wolfkid's "Iron" song was amazing. It would be cool to see the completed version, but I won't weep without it.
Live DVDs and CDs are different. I would love a Joanna one, so hopefully that Warfield show will surface somewhere someday. I'm still in the UK's wait for "The Family Jams". Can't wait for that one. I love a good music film. Gogol Bordello released a great one about returning to Ukraine. I recommend that to anyone who may be a fan.
