well she was raised in Nevada City, CA, now lives in the more rural city of Grass Valley, CA - but she moved to San Francisco, CA when she attended Mills College and played in The Pleased.
I just don't know how much of her real life is involved in the tracks. I mean clearly a lot, but I'm more interested in the position of the persona of In California than Jo herself
I think all we're told about the place the narrator has been in In California is that there she witnessed wonder and sorrow. She's been away and now she's returned, and the song examines her feelings about being back at home - how despite the home comforts it feels like a retreat, the feeling of waiting for something, of being stuck in place, etc.
I think the one line that strikes me as possibly suggesting a location other than home (in California), "...bracing like the bow upon a ship, and fully abandoning any thought of anywhere but home, my home" is consistent with the view that the whole song 'takes place' in California, and aside from the previously stated example ("the wonder and the sorrow") that all the information we're given is about the narrator's home. Obviously people think about home when they're homesick, but also when they're just sick of home.
That is, I don't think we can say for sure where the narrator has been, just that she's now back at home. If the song can be related to an episode in the life of Joanna herself, you could make a case that that's where she's been - if there was something you wanted to support with the contention that home is rural for the narrator and the place she's been is urban, I'm sure you could convincingly argue for that interpretation. It might be a little biographical as opposed to interpretive, but sometimes biographical detail is relevant to interpretation.
Christ Jordan you've really opened my eyes to a major part of IC. For some reason I'd been reading it as she had moved from one place to another, but you're right, it's about returning home and it no longer being right; not that far away from Autumn to be honest. I'm gonna have to rethink the In California part of the essay.
So is the idea; she moved away, but has now returned to be with her lover, but there's another lover? If not who is coming to see her? And anyway now she's back home but it doesn't feel the same.
I'm really confused now. Some aspects of the song suggest she's moved away 'since i left my home', 'if you come and see me', 'fully abandoning any thought of home'
others suggest, as you say, she's returned to her home and it doesn't fit 'i must stay here', 'it has half ruined me to be hanging around / here among the daphne' ...
ugh i feel really lost on this one. is she just conflicted? are there two lovers? grghasigurhsflk
i have always thought this piece is central in her breakup with "whatshisname" that on the day this song describes she went back to "home" in Calif and left him for good(perhaps after he had dumped her already). think the house is her house(as in the one she bought) and that some communication with Andy has already happened as well, perhaps she met him before this and they became confidants and he then expressed that he wanted more(as in relationship) to her(after learning of the breakup) and that a possible new future opened up to her thinking...in the middle of the muddle of a breakup
The thing i like best about deciphering Joanna's songs...i'm always wrong.
Beautiful! Thanks everyone, extraordinarily helpful. Loving the analysis Jordan and the NY Times quotes will come in handy too. Now I'll keep ploughing on, currently trying to work out a way to order the essay, impose some sort of structure on it. Thanks again
Essay is finally getting into shape, got a plan going, getting very excited. The theory is complicated but is definitely making me interrogate the subject further.
Does anyone else happen to know of, like Claire brought up, useful interviews / articles where J talks about her relationship with her home or the space around her? Those quotes from the NY Times articles were incredibly helpful.
Totally OT here but, she's in Grass Valley now? I'm surprised she doesn't like the nearby more foresty areas. I've never driven into Grass Valley though, what's it like? More old town like Coloma?
If anyone's interested, I've been slaving over this essay for weeks. Got it totally written now, but it's 2000 words too long so I need to take a serious pair of scissors to it tomorrow.
I can share the unedited version if you guys want? It'd be useful if you guys had any thoughts about how it could be made better as well I guess. how should i do it? copy pasting into a post would be a little ridiculous. it's currently at about 7000 words
Oh, 2000 words too long - I read that it was 2000 words long, and thought that it was supposed to be shorter than that. That makes more sense! I'm a pretty good editor if you'd like any help cutting it down.
is there a way of using google docs or something? i don't really understand how it works but it seems that would be better, like an online shared word document
