Also, is the line in Emily "and the pollen ruins the plough"? I've always thought the word was 'rheums' but the internet thinks otherwise. Rheums is so much better...
I've always known it as ruins and thought that was a really great line. I guess if you think about the version you're used to, you get kinda attached to it.
Very nice and insightful essay, Tom. Touches on several of the fundamental ontological polarities as well as demonstrates a sympathetic and sincere care for the material. I should look more deeply into the works of Tuan and Bachelard. Thanks for sharing.
A couple of lines stand out for me:
(a) "She is torn between homes and lovers, but Newsom can always find a home in her language. This is a solution to her crisis on a metaphysical level, but the narrator still has to live out her daily life and find a sense of belonging."
(b) "Here for the first time Newsom makes a distinction between physical and emotional space which she has previously found difficult to draw, indicating that the emotional space of a relationship must be shared as well as the physical. Her ideal relationship is a fusion of the internal spaces of two people, and by remaining emotionally distant her lover has unbalanced their shared space."
One might also be able to say, in regards to (b), that by remaining physically distant, both she and her ideal lover have unbalanced their shared space, even to the point of denying the reality of it altogether, as they both have to live their daily lives and find a sense of belonging, as mentioned in (a).
That's a neat little idea, Qu, I may try and work it in. And thanks for reading
There was a great deal of digressive pontificating about language as home and the relationship between language, memory and home that I unfortunately had to cut due to the word limit
i've not read it yet but if you're all for accuracy then i'd change the quote from Emily, 'Blossoms all have fallen' is the lyrics, and i'd move a comma in the 'hydrocephalitic' part from after the 'bow' to after the 'listlessness' because it changes the meaning
its pretty pedantic to point that out but if it were my essay then i'd like to know.
reading your essay now and about the comma, i think its easy to interpret that line in both ways. with the hydrocephalitic listlessness relating to the ants or the peonies. listening to the song it does seem to relate to the ants but i was trying to translate this once and i got the lyrics from the Ys booklet and it placed the comma after the 'listlessness' which relates it to the peonies.
the question is what joanna actually means by it. its a little ambiguous because of how it is sung, but then she put so much detail into the album i don't think she would have missed it in the booklet. i'd like to know what people think because i might still translate this and after these posts i must admit to being pedantic!
edit: i've read the essay now and i really enjoyed, i feel like i've learnt something. if you do another then be sure to post it! i noticed a mistake in the last paragraph where you have written 'remaining' instead of 'remain'.
thanks for the edits, i'll stick them in now. i don't think anything is going to be officially verified in regards to the comma, and it suits me better for hydrocephalitic to apply to the ants (plus i like the image more)
thanks for the comments too, if anyone else has any thoughts i'd love to hear em!
I'll read it now! I kept opening it up but then planning to read it later when I had a chunk of time to devote to it and then forgetting, but now I feel bad for putting it off. Starting now!
I really liked it. You shed light on stuff I'd never thought of before, and I thought the songs you chose fit perfectly. They begin and end the story of the relationship with space.
A note on the hydrocephaletic thing -- I could've sworn I remember reading in an interview (I think from Nylon magazine in 2006) Joanna discussing her use of the word and connecting it to the peonies, but that may be imagined as I've always read it as belonging to the peonies, so I could be falsely remembering as it suits my beliefs! Regardless, it works either way so it doesn't matter too much.
Sorry I don't have better input. You've written a better essay than I ever could and I can hardly improve upon it. Thanks for sharing!
Got it back today, i got a high first! So happy, i cried a little bit. My tutor said it was publishable.
I was wondering if there might be some way to send it to Joanna, or to someone who might be able to pass it on to her. Anyone know what's the best way to do go about that? She doesn't have to read it, I just would like to have tried to send it her way
