As most of you know, Joanna lost a close friend before recording Ys. She has stated in an interview that he/she was the character in Cosmia and that this loss inspired Ys in general. Since Ys is dedicated to "Cassie", a lot of people have speculated that this person went by that name. Recently I found this article, which seems to confirm this theory and add that she died in a car accident in the summer of 2004. Since it is posted on a "professional" website I found it trustworthy. My questions are the following, do you think this article is legitimate and chronicles real events? If it is true, how does this change our interpretation of Ys (if at all). How does this affect our image of Joanna (if at all)? Finally is there any way to get our hands on this documentary?

That film is of great interest to a lot of us, but it doesn't seem likely we'll ever get to see it. I've emailed the director several time to no reply.

Seems legit anyway, and no it doesn't colour my interpretation at all, since she'd already confirmed what the song was about.

sorry to double post but i thought cosmia was related to somebody that had cancer, i dont know where i got that impression and reading this it does seem that i am wrong. i wonder if anybody knows of an interview or something that lead me down this road?

I thought I heard her last name before. I check the back of my physical copy of Ys. After the lyrics and everything there's a dedication to several families including " the Schley-Mays" so this is definitely her. Sad to hear she died because of a drunk driver, something that could be so easily prevented. Thanks for the info BeeJWeez.

i'm not really interesting to know if yes or not the lost friend named this or that, i think it's personal joanna's business, if she was metaphorical in her song it's maybe she didn't want to put it under the light. i'm sorry but i think this is a little bit morbid to look after such informations.
