Ive been absent from MM for quite a while. I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying life...
I've been puzzling over the merits of doing a JNST2.
First of all, apologies if one's already underway (a quick look doesn't reveal one, though!) - I am sure someone will advise if it is!
Secondly, although it's been rather a quiet time for new material, I do think that, in years to come, it'd be nice if we could have a list showing our favourites, year by year. Set against that, I realise that there are those who don't like the idea ... but if you'd politely ignore it, that's all fine. We can keep everything to do with it in one thread here, so it doesn't spoil your enjoyment of MM.
Thirdly, because it HAS been quiet, and I am going to guess that "traffic" on MM is a bit down that when we did the last one just over a year ago, a somewhat quicker, more low-key format, would be advisable.
Fourthly, the last one was somewhat spoiled (by me) by "late entries" - pieces that I'd overlooked (or not known about) when I did the initial draw, so if anyone would be kind enough to suggest any songs that were omitted last time (including covers, collaborations, whether new or simply overlooked last time), I'd be most grateful. Please post them here as soon as you can!
I aim to post a format and first round draw here tomorrow night. I hope it's a useful and fun project
Thank you for asking. Here's an outline of the way the tournament will work and of its 'rules':
1. The tournament is intended to find (in a fun way) the best-loved song by Joanna Newsom. It is driven by the votes of readers of this MilkyMoon site. The tournament is thus between the songs and not between the people who are involved in it as voters.
2. Each SONG that Joanna has performed is one entry. This means that songs that have been recorded more than once count as a single entrant, and voters are asked to consider their personal favourite version when casting their votes. As well as the songs on Joanna's three official albums, her two early self-released EPs, and her handful of official singles, the tournament is also open to any song (or other scripted or lyrical piece. poem, etc) that she has ever performed, either solo or in collaboration with another artist or a group, so long as it is known to exist by the tournament organiser. (This, by default, is me, but it doesn't mean I have to have heard the song, but just that I have to know it has been performed; it can include songs only performed "live" as well as officially released songs).
3. The organiser will draw the songs into a series of Groups, to be posted in this thread. MilkyMoon users are then invited to vote for their favourite song (or songs - see instructions posted at the time of the draw) in each Group, within a specified time limit. At the expiry of that time period, the votes will be counted up, and the most popular song in each group will progress to the next round, whereupon the process described in paragraph 3 will be repeated. The following provisions will also apply: a) The draw will include an element of 'seeding', based on the song's performance in the previous JNST, or in previous rounds of this JNST, to try to ensure that the most popular songs do not clash at earlier stages of the tournament. b) If voters are asked to cast more than one vote per group, these can be ordered according to instructions posted at the time of each specific draw - for example, if two songs are to be chosen, these may be allocated 2 points for a first choice, and 1 point for a second choice. c) If a voter is unable to choose between more than one song, their vote(s) will be regarded as shared equally between the songs involved, unless he or she makes it clear that they do not like any of the songs in a particular group, in which case no vote will be counted for that voter for that group. d) The organiser will endeavour to make the draws as neutral as possible, for example by scrambling the order of groups and the order in which songs are presented within each group. e) Depending on the exact number of songs entered in the initial draw, it is possible that (i) One or more of the songs that were successful in the first JNST could be exempted from the First Round; and/or (ii) Wild-card places in the next round may be allocated to the "best losers" (however defined) from a current round, with the proviso that no song can receive two such wild-cards during the course of the same tournament.
4. The final stage may follow the same pattern, or may be constituted as a series of "head to head" pairings on a round-robin basis involving approximately 4 to 6 songs. An element in ordering the songs in the Final may be a brought forwadr 'bonus score' derived from voting in earlier rounds, but this will form only a minor part of the total weighting. (The final stages will decide the positions of the songs which reach that stage, and the lower positions will be determined by analysis of the results of the earlier rounds, possibly with a subsidiary vote for some of the positions).
Thank you for your interest in how I plan to do this JNST. For those that aren't interested in the mechanics - don't worry: all I invite you to do is to do is cast your votes for each group in the period stated. Please only post them in this thread, and if you change your mind (within the time limit) please do so by making a NEW post, and not by editing your initial one, as I could miss this if I've done an intermediate count and look only for later postings.
The first JNST was held in 2011. I think it may also be interesting to do a series of "retrospective" tournaments for earlier years, obviously only entering songs that were extant at each year. It'll be tricky to work out which songs could have been heard (and in what versions) at each stage, and impossible to put ourselves in the mindset that we might have held at these points in the past ... but nevertheless could be fun. I'll worry about this as a 'side project' a bit later, but if better palaeonewsomologists than I could give some though to the earliest appearances of each of her songs, that would be helpful!

I have quite a few recordings of the earliest performances of some songs on HOOM. Further back than that (in the pre-Ys period), I wouldn't be much help.
Though in the context of running General Elections, I am not certain whether "endorsement" should be construed in the positive sense of the word, or in the "driving licence" sense.
As for the entries for the 2012 JNST, there were 98 songs in last year's, and they will all of course be included again this time. I am still none the wiser as to whether "I'm Already Gone" on the album 'One Piece From The Middle' by The Pleased is the same song as their "Already Gone" on their 'Don't Make Things' album - so I will continue to list them as different songs unless anyone can reliably advise otherwise.
Here is a list of the seven new entries I propose to include - but again the list remains open for a few hours yet, so please add to it where you can:
Another Day [with Roy Harper]
The Diver's Wife [provisional title for a new song, so I read on here last night!]
Instrumental 1999
Life's A Happy Song [listed as being by the Entire Cast' of The Muppets' recent film, so I guess we should assume she's in there somewhere]
The Muppet Show Theme [collaboration with The Muppets]
This Is Just To Say
Tom Bombadil and the Portlandia appearance [though I've not seen it, I guess her dialogue should be included as well, as it was a scripted appearance, I presume, and not just an interview]
So there will be 105 entries unless anyone can suggest anything that I have missed out, or offer definitive intelligence that the two Pleased songs mentioned above are one and the dsame, or that Joanna doesn't appear on the "Life's A Happy Song" [or perhaps even on some of the others that were included last time, by Nervpus Cop or The pleased].
Also, before we start, I should say that the idea of a Joanna Newsom Song Tournament was first proposed by LawnsOfDawns and seconded by Jesse. If you think it's a good idea, thank them for it, not me ... if you think it's a bad one, just blame me for implementing it.
Having given it some more thought, I can now say how I intend to format the tournament. (I'll reserve the option to change it, though, if the number of participants is very low, or tinker with it a bit if the number of entries changes from 105).
FIRST ROUND Thirty-five groups of three songs each. Songs that occupied positions 14-35 in JNSTI will be seeded to share groups with those placed 57-36 respectively, so that the placings of the two paired songs always totals 73. (The two songs that tied for 44th/45th will be ordered arbitrarily). The remaining 40 entrants from JNSTI plus the 7 new entrants will be randomly allocated to the groups, with the proviso that a group cannot contain (a) two 'new' songs, or (b) two songs by the same 'collaboration'. Voters will be invited to choose a first and second favourite in each group, and these songs will be awarded 2 and 1 respectively. At the expiry of the time-period, the songs will be ordered in each group according to the number of points each receives.
SECOND ROUND To the winning song from each of the thirty-five First Round groups, will be added the four other songs receiving the next highest numbers of points, to produce 39 songs entered into the second round. These will be drawn into thirteen groups of three songs (on a seeded basis), and voting, scoring, and group ordering will proceed as in the First Round.
THIRD ROUND This will consist of fifteen songs, being the 13 group winners from the Second Round, plus the two songs (excluding the four who did not win their First Round groups) receiving the next highest numbers of points. The drawing of groups, voting, scoring, and group ordering will proceed as in the First Round.
I propose that the time limit for voting in each round will be one week (and I intend to post results and draws as close as possible to the British Summer Time midnight that follows Sunday, each week, beginning 8th July 2012). However, if interest is low (less than 10 sets of votes, excluding my own, received before the deadline, I'll extend it for a further week).
FINAL STAGE(S) This will depend to some extent on how much interest there has been in Rounds 1 to 3. If it has been good, then I intend to progress the five group winning songs from the Third Round, together with the runner-up receiving the next highest number of points (excluding any song that had previously failed to win its group) into a final "pool" of six songs, which would be paired and voted upon in a round-robin basis as in 2011. If, however, interest has been low, I'll progress eight songs (3 winners and the best 3 non-winners not previously reprieved) from Round Three and pair them off in a series of knock-out pairings: first four pairings, reducing to two Semi-Final pairings, and then a straight Final. In this case, there would also be some sort of 'play off' to determine positions 3 & 4 and 5 to 6).
Other 'tinkerings' may be necessary in the event that two songs tie for a qualifting position at any stage.

A few hours late, I'm afraid, but here is the start of the 2012 Joanna Newsom Song Tournament.
Please browse the following groups, and select your first and second favourite song within each group. If you can't choose two, please say so (and if you only pick one, indicate if you'd like it to be regarded as a 1st or a 2nd choice). If you want to have a 'tie', again, please say so. If you change your mind (before the deadline, which should be next Sunday night, UK time) please make a NEW posting, rather than editing your first one.
Since posting the notes yesterday, I have discovered that (a) Already Gone and I'm Already Gone are the same song (probably different versions) appearing on two different albums by The pleased; and (b) due to my own error, Our Anniversary appeare twice in the 2011 JNST. In the absence of any suggested new entries, we're kicking-off with 103 entrants, instead of 105, which means that two of the groups are one song short. I will have to decide how to treat the runners-up in these groups in comparison to thers when the selection of 'highest placed non-winners' arises.
Where the song is a collaboration, the abbreviations listed below will be used throughout to denote the partners (I have treated collaborations with The Ys Street Band as solo works for this purpose). I have also ignored all mash-ups, sampled songs etc, as I believe none of them contain any JN material that does not appear in one of her own pieces. In later rounds, a * will denote a song that is carrying forward a 'wild-card' and so cannot benefit from another such reprieve -

UPDATE - I've just read the thread about the concert with Philip Glass & Tim Fain, and see that there were other collaborations mentioned. Therefore, I'll add them to the draw as soon as I get home, brining each group up to (at least) 3 songs each. I realise it'll be rather "epidemic" (as Delboy would say) as so few of us have heard these songs, but I feel they should be there...
Therefore, please hold fire on your votes for a few hours more! (If, that is, anyone is actually reading this!)
I just wrote up my votes - I'm not going to vote for any of the Philip Glass & Tim Fain collaborations since I've not heard them; can I go ahead and post?

I couldn't stop myself from voting for all the Smog/Bill Callahan songs even though the only one I really think should count as a collaboration is "Rock Bottom Riser" (seriously though, is "The Wheel" on there just because you can kind of hear her talking in the background at the end??).
Any time I only chose one song, it should be considered a 1st choice.

Hi everyone and thank you for all the votes received so far. I was a bit worried that no-one would look!
Claire - My apologies to you (our first voter of 2012) ... I did write a reply to your question, but it seems it didn't make it through the wires! But yes: The Wheel is included because I had it noted (on the authority of someone from MM, no doubt, but probably a while ago) that Joanna did indeed appear on it somewhere. You could well be right that it's just some chat at the end: unfortunately I don't know this song. I also didn't hear her on the second Muppets song either, but the CD cover says "Entire Cast" so I am covering the possibility. If "Life's A Happy Song" wins the JNST, we'll open a stewards' enquiry ;)
Ququuluru - You are correct: It was a poem, and not a song. But I included it anyway. I asked myself "Where should one draw the line?" I felt that interviews shouldn't appear, but that 'scripted' or 'composed' things should, regardless of whether there is a musical element or not. Some artists (ok, not many, but I can think of at least two that I listen to) whose work includes musical pieces and spoken word pieces (and some pieces that inhabit a grey area in between) so if we were doing a "Song Tournament" for those artists, it'd be perverse to exclude some of them. So - since there is a recording of it out there [albeit not an official release], I included it anyway. That "recording" element is also key: doubtless she has recited or sung many other things throughout her life ... but we are only aware of some of them, and without a recording (or at least the possibility that one exists) I don't think it serves any purpose to include them. Hope this helps clarify my mindset, but I am sure there are other - equally valid - viewpoints on this.
