Getting really hard now: my six favourite remaining songs at this stage were all bunched into three groups, and it didn't sit easily giving Baby Birch, Kingfisher, and Go Long only 1 point each.
I didn't post the draw for this round until Tuesday, so I feel I should leave it open until the equivalent point this week, as I promised to run each round for a week. After that, however, there will be a series of pairings in a round-robin basis (as per JNST1), and these will probably only be open for 3-4 days each, so please be sure to check back regularly to cast your votes at each rotation.

It's endlessly fascinating how our tastes can differ within our mutual admiration for Joanna's music. Eleven of the twelve choices (including positions) of Headless_Caboose and I were exactly the same, yet the song she refers to in her footnote is perhaps the only one of Joanna's main songs that I would rather not listen to - Colleen. Perhaps Headless_Caboose feels the same about En Gallop, that I regret didn't make it this far . This isn't meant as any sort of criticism, by the way (least of all to Headless_Caboose, whom I thank for voting and for adding an interesting comment) - just a possible talking point thrown up by the thread, as to how - within the compass of Joanna's work - we can all point in individual directions.

So now we know the six songs who will contest the final group phase of the 2012 JNST. Five of them were in the final last year, with the only exception being Have One On Me, which has replaced Go Long in the top six.
From Ys Emily Sawdust & Diamonds Only Skin
From Ys and the Ys Street Band EP Cosmia
From Have One On Me Have One On Me In California
The procedure will be the same as last year, which is as follows (if you read all this stuff last year, there's even less need to this time, as it's almost the same):
2012 Joanna Newsom Song Tournament II Format of the Fourth Round
1. Timescale Please be sure to come back regularly, because in this round you are invited to vote in five different sets of pairings, which will be posted at 4-day intervals. I intend to post new pairings for your votes at a minute to midnight BST on each of the following dates: Pairings 01, 02 & 03 - 23:59 on Tuesday 31st July 2012 Pairings 04, 05 & 06 - 23:59 on Saturday 4th August 2012 Pairings 07, 08 & 09 - 23:59 on Wednesday 8th August 2012 Pairings 10, 11 & 12 - 23:59 on Sunday 12th August 2012 Pairings 13, 14 & 15 - 23:59 on Thursday 16th August 2012 Votes for each pairing close when I post the scores from each set of three pairings, which will not be earlier than the times stated above). I aim to post the results for the final set of three pairings at 23:59 on Monday 20th August 2012, after which I will post the final results.
2. Composition Each of the six finalist songs will be represented in one of the pairings in each set. No song will be eliminated during the Fourth Round. I ask you all to vote for one song in each pairing (and remember to include the Pairing Number, too, for my ease in collating the votes). Then, come back a few days later to cast votes in the next set of pairings, and so on. If you miss a set, it doesn't matter - every vote counts in each pairing, but it is not essential to vote each time. If you cannot decide between two songs in a particular pairing, just say so, and I will count it as ½ a vote for each one.
3. Presentation Each pairing will show two songs (obviously), presented in a random order, and the order of the pairings within a set will also be random.
4. Scoring The winning song in each pairing will receive 10 points; if it is a tie both songs will receive 5 points each. A further 10 bonus points will be divided between the songs in each pairing in proportion to the number of votes they receive. I will round this to the nearest whole number, but will maintain the full decimal in my workings in case it becomes important. This means that the most points available for each song in each pairing is 20 (10 for winning the pairing, and a further 10 if it received 100% of the votes). A tied pairing will give each song 10 points each (5 + 50% of 10 bonus points). Each song will also bring forward a maximum of 10 bonus points, reflecting its past performances (JNST I and Rounds 1-3 of JNST II). I will detail the calculation below. At the end of the voting on each set, I will post a 'league table' showing the standings at that stage.
5. Calculation of Bonus Points Seven criteria were used, the first giving a score out of 20, and the remainder giving a score between 0 and 10. This gives a theoretical maximum of 80, the actual figure being then divided by 8 to give the maximum number of bonus points as 10. I will show it as a whole number, but carry forward the full decimal in my calculations, to use in the event of a tie. This figure is fixed, and will not change as the Fifth Round progresses. It is intended that this will (a) give some credit, no matter how small, for all the votes cast in previous rounds, and (b) as a cosmetic in the early stages of Round 5, so that no song appears to be struggling to get even a handful of points (this could influence later voting – but it’s a trade-off: to keep the interest higher I felt it better to publish the intermediate scores). The seven scores are: • JNST1: The winning song receives a score of 20; the second receives 19; the third, fourth and fifth receive 18, 17 & 16 respectively, and the seventh receives 14. • Each song receives a score of 10 for winning its First Round group. • Each song receives a score (out of 10) for the proportion of votes it received in its First Round group. There were 18 voters, so a maximum of 36 points in Round 1, so a song scoring 33 points would receive 33÷36×10 = 9·167). • Each song received a score of 10 for winning its Second Round group. • Each song received a score (out of 10) for the proportion of votes it received in its Second Round group. • Each song winning its Third Round group receives a score of 10; the song that qualified as "best runner-up" receives a two-thirds of this (~6·667) indicating it was second in a group of 3. • Each song receives a score (out of 10) for the proportion of votes it received in its Third Round group. This gives bonus points ranging from 9·714 down to 8·379. This means that there is only a very small difference between the highest and lowest, which is very unlikely to affect the final rankings, but it does mean that every vote cast during the whole tournament carries at least some weight in the final score.
As usual, however, remember that you are voting for your favourite version of each of these songs – it can be the official release as mentioned above, or any of the many live versions that are floating about in cyberspace.
May I offer some last words of advice before we begin: Before you cast your votes, please listen again to each song – preferably in the order that they are presented in each set. Don’t be afraid to re-assess your preferences, and don’t worry if you feel you are being inconsistent (just because you voted A ahead of B, and B ahead of C, there’s nothing to stop you choosing C over A) because the appreciation of music is fluid rather than die-cast. Let your heart rule your head. And most of all, enjoy re-listening and enjoy the remainder of the JNST.
I hope that all makes sense ... but even if it doesn't just remember all you have to do is to cast your votes on the latest set of pairings posted. Once a new set is up, the previous set is closed for voting.
