I have just heard the lyrics of ‘This Side of the Blue’ read out, as a poem, on BBC Radio 4’s poetry appreciation programme ‘Poetry Please’! Unfortunately it turns out that this was the Saturday evening repeat of the edition of the programme which was first broadcast six days earlier, so if you want to catch it on the BBC iPlayer, you only have seventeen hours from the time of this post …
It is the 29 January edition, and ‘This Side of the Blue’ begins just after 12 minutes.
Apologies if this has already been posted; I couldn’t find any mention of it in the Right-On forum.
Well, it's not a very talkative class, at all (I'd guess that many people, like me, didn't choose to be placed in it, but oh well) so nobody really said anything All of the freshmen perpetually bring in either Langston Hughes poems (the same 3) or Shel Silverstein rhymes ... and once a girl brought in Nickleback lyrics.
Actually, the teacher asked why I chose that poem, and I said "because I love Joanna Newsom" and she said "Okay," which probably meant that she had no idea who I was talking about. She does apparently like Laurie Anderson though, so she gets points in my book.
And he used to make me pray, wearing a mask like a death's head. When he put me there in the back seat, and he said, "Jesus save me, Jesus save me."
i once met a guy that likes Joanna (not many around here) and got the chance to talk about some of the lyrics, i realised how much i liked saying the lyrics but i also stumbled over the song rhythm so i have since gone over different lyrics in my head and worked out how i would read them without the rhythm of the song.
now the verses are locked and loaded for any such encounter in the future
i started with just my favourite parts of ys, i have been over them a lot, its a good way to kill time on a slow day at work or on a long walk to work. but i dont think i could read any of her songs start to finish without the song rhythm creeping into my head
Makes me curious as to which of her songs would be the best without any music. I can definitely say that 'what we have known' is beautiful with or without backing. So many artists' music is hard to pass off as poetry due to the incessant repeating of a chorus, but thankfully joanna has been wayyyy beyond that for quite some time now
I love everything about Autumn, and yeah is does sound pretty good when read out
I'm planning on reading something Joanna for a poetry reading in a few weeks, and I'm seriously considering Autumn, so it's interesting that you'd mention it.
When I had to pick a poem for class I picked Sawdust and Diamonds. The rythm is exactly the same speaking it as it is singing, I tried some other songs but I always end up half singing them...
