4500 words, phew. You'd be forgiven for not reading it all.
Disclaimer: This is intended as one possible interpretation of the song, not as an 'only valid interpretation'. There are many other possible interpretations that are equally valid. I doubt that this one is what Joanna intended, but it is there and it is meaningful. Other interpretations are just as important to me, too: as a story of personal liberation from oppression, it encouraged me to come out as gay.
Though you're more educated and eloquent than me, more or less, this is the interpretation I came to the first time I really listened to the song. I still remember that moment -- listening and reading along and thinking, holy shit this song is amazing. Thanks for being awesome and writing long essays about one of my favorite JNew songs.
Actually, Polliwog, for such a long and closely argued piece, it's a very engaging read, and - with the possible exception of the very obscure last few lines of the song - it presents a very plausible and coherent interpretation of the song. What might appear from Jordan's title to be a dry, political essay airs many interesting points, and I am glad he wrote it, glad I read it. Thank you, Jordan.
This is so awesome, really well supported. I love how open to interpretation this song is in particular. I wonder, how do you think your argument is supported specifically by the actual music of M&B?
Hmm, in so far as the 'nursery rhyme' quality of the music lends itself to any interpretation of the song as a didactic parable, yes. I don't hear bars of the Internationale in it or anything.
You don't hear bars of the Internationale? Must just be me.
Hmm yeah I like that. I think the use of other voices also lends it an 'it has been said...' quality. The last third also feels kinda militant, like a cadence call, what with the drum and the repeated melody and the repeated chord.
True; I think the transition to that bit is sort of the fairytale breaking down, too. Monkey's promises are a fairytale, a myth he's constructed to control Ursala, and that last section is when you really see his true colours and that fairytale unravels, reflected in the music taking on a more sort of visceral quality.
