I just realized that in less than a week (August 30th) it's the five-year anniversary of the leak of Ys, where many of us heard it for the first time, and in a couple of months the five-year anniversary of its official release.
Caught between simultaneous feelings of disbelief that it's been so long already, and also so short—already it feels like I've spent most of my life with these songs.

Crazy. I remember Ys taking a long long time to grow on me. I'd even say it wasn't until I seen her perform it live (a year later) until I really fully appreciated it.
I can't believe it's been so long since I first heard Ys. It's only been my favourite thing ever for about 3 years though, something that immense takes a while to fully sink in. I think the album has the scope and thematic richness of a classic novel, poetry that's up there with the best and some of the most breathtakingly beautiful music. What an album. Sorry that was a bit gushing.
Ys was such a radical departure from WW and MEM that it took a few listens before I was able to fully appreciate the richness and complexity of it. For the next year or so afterward I listened to almost nothing else. Although I only listen to it once in a while now, it still stirs my emotions.
I discovered Joanna just after Ys was released - one of my friends heard This Side of the Blue in the New York blackout Orange advert at the cinema and sent it to one of my other friends, and he sent me Peach, Plum, Pear and I thought it was annoying, but it kept coming on shuffle and it grew on me till I liked it, then I started downloading more of her music and Ys was there in its entirety, so it must have been late 2006/early 2007. That being the case, it didn't take any time to grow on me at all - the first time I heard Monkey & Bear, which was the first song on Ys I listened to, having not heard much of her earlier work I thought it was the best thing I'd ever heard. So I fell in love with her music through Ys, rather than having to grow accustomed to the difference; I loved it the first time I heard it. It was so unlike anything I'd heard before.
It's really been only about two years for me since I first heard of Joanna Newsom, via lyrics from WHY?, and Ys didn't really grow on me until Have One On Me was released. So, a considerably shorter time for me in those terms, but I do agree with you on how weird it is to really look back and see how much time has passed without recognition.
And he used to make me pray, wearing a mask like a death's head. When he put me there in the back seat, and he said, "Jesus save me, Jesus save me."
I've only just bought the album, and I'm having the same feelings: that it is probably going to take a while to grow on me. Drag City really goes to town on its CD cases though doesn't it? -- I have HOOM and Ys, and I love the cases for both of them; they're so much more interesting than the usual fare. That probably makes me sound really obsessed. :-/
Ys actually took no time at all to grow on me, I loved it instantly! I first heard of Joanna in the year that Ys was released, because it was when I decided I wanted to get a harp and my dad told me he'd seen a harpist/singer on Jools Holland, so I listened to her BBC Introducing session and got MEM for Christmas. I bought Ys the next spring as sort of an impulse buy, because the shop I got it from was closing down and it was pretty cheap (less than half the price of what they sell it for in other shops I've been in), and I read the lyrics on the train home and by the time I reached my town I was really desperate to listen to Cosmia because of how great the lyrics were. So yeah, I loved the album instantly, but I don't listen to it too often because I don't want to 'over-listen' to it. I mainly just listen to it on Sunday mornings.
I really want to celebrate the 5-year-anniversary of it but I'm not sure how! I'll probably just listen to it super-loudly.
Ys was immediately something I treasured and put on headphones and listened to from beginning to end- on plane flights, before bed, - anytime I can slow down and act like a human being instead of a human doing.
I still find myself falling back when I need it to relax and focus
I was so happy when Ys came out. I didn't think she could top mem. I remember seeing her before she released ys can't for the life of me remember what song she played. But I was blown away. I really love the way she used to start with yarn and glue, she looks so small up there and then out comes this voice!
But back on topic ys is one of my fave albums of all time.
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
i still listen to ys often, slightly less than daily. i got into joanna in a similar way to how somebody on here said they did, i downloaded a few songs back in 2005, i wasnt blown away or anything but i kept them on my playlist and they would come on now and then, i think peach plum pear for the first to grow on me,
i eventually got MEM around the time Ys was soon to be released, i think it had already leaked at that point but i waited till the album was about, so that must have been around this time 5 years ago. needlyess to say, the album blew me away
Today was my five year Ys anniversary and I celebrated by... listening to Ys! I've heard these songs hundreds of times over the last five years but they still get me every time.
It's too late to be grateful It's too late to be late again It's too late to be hateful
