Your Joanna Listening

Do you listen to Joanna everyday? Or do you go through long periods with and then without? And if so, in those periods do you solely listen to her music or amongst other things?

I'm interested because whereas my Joanna listening used to be so extreme that I would say I listened to 'music and Joanna Newsom' as two separate and equal entities, recently I maybe listen to Ys once a week and the odd HOOM or MEM track once in a while, I can't just allow myself to sink into her music and float away like I used to be able to. Sometimes I can re-enter the zone and listen forever but it's less and less frequent these days. I still regard her as my favourite singer and an incomprehensibly admirable talent, but when I started getting super into all sorts of other genres she faded from my brain somewhat. Troubling.

Word for word, I am currently experiencing the same thing.

I agree somewhat, I go through periods of intense listening to all my favorites, it's just cycles.
I couldn't possibly listen to mostly one artist all the time, that would cause me to hate the music, so it's perfectly reasonable.

I consider Peter Gabriel definitely very close to the top if not the top of my list of favorite artists, but I don't listen to all Peter Gabriel all the time either, yesterday I heard Solsbury Hill on the radio and decided to take it out just listened to his first album three times but that was the first time in two or three months that I had taken it out.

But, yeah, the last thing I've been listening to of Joanna's is the one 2004 concert (where she starts with Yarn and Glue a capella) every once in a while. I suppose something will happen to prompt me to listen to her in large volumes again, and that will be the end of the Peter Gabriel phase.

Not everyday. I can even go months and months until I come back to her music, but when I do, I really sink into it.

I go through phases. At the moment I'm listening to her quite a lot, sometimes not so much. It can also be a situational thing, like, "This song is for when I'm feeling like this."

I started listening to her around three years ago, and I don't think I've gone a single day without listening to her since. I used to lose myself in the density of Ys for days, but now that I know every twist, turn, and hook of the songs by heart, I've kind of settled into a state of muted admiration and respect with them.
Although I adore HOOM, I definitely identify with MEM and Ys more. I guess that whole album was just so grounded and personal that it's nearly impossible to project your own feelings and experiences onto it.

phasing too, as i do with others artist, i can spend a year whithout listen to bjork, then dor few months i will listen exclusively her music, same with joanna even if the pace is faster, i spend three month non listening her then spend weeks listen one album, sometimes a week only the same song...my entourgae can't understand how i can be so manic with music...i'm into last bon iver for three weeks now and can't imagine listen something else apart gainsbourg.
i've to say i treat movies as surrounding music and i usually listen music with headphones lay on my bed, my preferred cleaning music is Harry Potter's movies, and i usually remove my legs hair on Julie&Julia's movie

I go through phases. And within the Joanna-phases, specific song phases. Right now, I'm in an out phase so I actually haven't been listening much. It's always been like this though, and whenever I start listening again, I'm always just as blown away.

When I go to camp, it's one month of no joanna. But when I get back, I just play ys over and over. It always takes my breath away.

Yeah--there's a huge difference for me between listening to Ys and anything else in her repertoire. I like all of her other music really well, naturally, and it sort of goes in and out of my rotation depending on whether or not I'm generally in the mood for music that's more driving and rock-ish or more subdued and thoughtful. I'll listen to it heavily if I'm focused on songs that deal really intricately with their lyrics, and if I'm really in that sort of a place I'll sometimes sit down and listen to one of the more "cerebral" songs on Ys like "Sawdust and Diamonds." I only listen to Ys on the whole, or particularly "Only Skin," a few times a year, though, because it's such an intense experience for me that doing it more often wouldn't make sense; I'm always crying and crying by the end.
