Sup guys! First post, but I've been lurking around here for months.
Not sure if this has been discussed already, but I was wondering which song(s) people think is/are the best for introducing people to Joanna's music. I'm making a mix-CD for some friends and want to include some Joanna stuff in hopes of fully converting them.
Basically I'm looking for a few songs that are more easily accessible to those who have never heard her before, but also that are well representative of her overall style. In other words, while a song like Good Intentions is catchy and easily likable, it's pretty different from all of her other stuff. What was the first song that had you sold to Joanna's music?
At first I was thinking something like Peach Plum Pear, as that seems to be her most well-known song, but I'm worried that the MEM voice is going to scare people off ("is this a hoax???? she sounds like a 70 year old lisa simpson!!!" ) before they realize it's awesomeness and beauty. So is something from HOOM a better bet? I'm torn.
Hm, well the song that first got me into her was Three Little Babes, and then Sadie and Inflammatory Writ, but it really depends on what type of music the people like already.
I would say '81 is a good one to include, because her voice is softer, it represents her lyrical and musical style well, and it's shorter than most/average song length so the people (if they're anything like my friends) won't be turned off immediately like "oh, this song is 7 WHOLE MINUTES long no way I'm listening to that! Either that or Bridges and Balloons would be a good choice.
And he used to make me pray, wearing a mask like a death's head. When he put me there in the back seat, and he said, "Jesus save me, Jesus save me."
I kinda think '81 and CCCC are a bit... well, not boring, but they're hardly like, "Wow! Check out this amazing artist! Listen to this, it's incredible!" Kinda like introducing someone to Beethoven with one of those bits where the strings are just sort of hiccuping. "Yeah, a friend let me listen to Beethoven once, it was a bit... limp and weak." Length's an issue, of course. GIPC and In California would be great options otherwise. And probably still are if you can convince them to listen to the whole song.
Sawdust & Diamonds has been the most consistently successful at converting my friends to Joanna Newsom. I don't understand why, because it's rather long.
I think you should let them listen to whichever songs they will like.
Ok, that makes no sense. Neither does it make sense for us to speculate on which songs will impress another person. Since I joined the forum in 2005 I've seen this question come up again and again. Someone will recommend a song, and someone else will recommend against it. Ask members which songs they love, and there will surely be others who hate those same songs. So, how could we possibly know which song or songs will be liked by someone else? If friends or family seem like they might be open to Joanna, just offer to play something for them. If they like her, then tell them more about her. If they don't, then drop it. You can't talk someone into having your particular sensibilities.
I would suggest something from MEM, like perhaps Sadie or Sprout and the Bean. Personally I don't think it's a good idea to use anything from Have One On Me, because her voice is so different and the music is so much more easy going. If they hear that first, then the earlier stuff they hear after will automatically sound really really weird to them and put them off. I think it's probably best to start from the beginning onwards.
The first stuff I heard of her was the set she did for BBC Introducing (Sadie, Peach Plum Pear and Swansea) and then Sprout and the Bean, and that had me hooked.
I pretty much agree with you. Still, if someone seems interested, no harm in trying. I think the best way would be to take them to a live concert. My mum's been to a few with me and I took my best friend to one in Belgium (when I met Milki), she sometimes asks me to put on one of her songs now.
I agree about the concert. Even seeing someone in person that you know you don't like can change your perspective about them. Kind of like learning about what the abstract-expressionists were trying to achieve actually helped me to appreciate works that I flat out hated before. Outright fans may not be created that way, but you never know until you try.
