There have been many studies done about how music influences memory, and it's suggested that it allows people to store memories more vividly through "chunking" - the regular metric patterns in music allow us to group larger bits of information into easily-digestible pieces. So that leads me to ask...
...What does each of Joanna's albums, or what do particular songs, make you remember from your life? A particular event? A period of time when you listened to it? Nothing at all? What vivid memories do you associate with Joanna Newsom?
Ys will always remind me of England. I was studying abroad there when it came out, and I used to listen to it every time I took the bus from campus into the city centre. I would get through Emily and up to the "Deep in the night" section of Monkey & Bear on the way there, and then I would take a different bus back that took longer and get through the rest of Monkey & Bear, Sawdust & Diamonds and Only Skin, and then listen to Cosmia walking from the bus stop back to my dorm. I'll also always remember the first time I listened to it. I took the bus to a record store and listened to The Milk-Eyed Mender, and then when I got back to my room I lay on my bed and listened to Ys straight through while watching the sun set out my window.
It's too late to be grateful It's too late to be late again It's too late to be hateful
GIPC makes me think of Kenny, so I rarely listen to it. I listened to Ys on a loop while I was in Paris, so sometimes I think about where I was. (I listened to Emily while eating Earl Grey macarons). I am sure I will be back with more.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
Unfortunately, I listened to Milk-Eyed Mender nonstop for about 3 years, so I have no super-strong associations with it. Occasionally Peach, Plum, Pear will remind me of the day when I first heard it (I was going on an adventure with a friend) and sometimes Sadie or "En Gallop" will remind me of my apartment my senior year of undergrad.
Ys has a similar problem, but if I'm driving down the right stretch of highway, Monkey & Bear reminds me of when I had my wisdom teeth removed (it was pretty traumatic) - I was listening to it a lot at the time, so driving to and from the oral surgeon for pre-op and follow-up meetings put me on that road quite often.
'81 and Good Intentions Paving Co. remind me of Chicago because they were the early-release tracks, and I would listen to them on YouTube in the morning getting ready for school. Have One On Me was on loop while driving to campus, so it reminds me of traffic.
Hmmm, I don't feel like I have many specific memories associated with her music because her music has been such a constant for the past 6 years. I might not really listen for a while but I always, always go back to it. I'm more likely to have memories associated with music I consider to be a phase. Like, "I had a phase where I listened to X all the time, but now I don't, so whenever I hear X I think of that time period." But I guess sometimes Ys, particularly "Emily" reminds me of the drive back from Atlanta after I'd seen Joanna live the first time. It was like, the week Ys came out. I think I must have listened to the leak a little bit right before even though I had tried not to, but I really wanted to know what it was like because I knew that was probably going to be mostly what she played. Anyway, obv seeing Joanna for the first time was a life-changing experience and I was obsessed for a good while after that (which happens now every time I see her). But I must have bought Ys at the show or something because I listened the whole way home and I just have a memory of pulling off the interstate for gas in the middle of nowhere when the "pa pointed out to me" part came on and I dunno. I just remember that scene in my mind specifically. Other than that, I don't know. I might have to get back to this discussion if I think of something else. I have certain memories that connect with going to see her live or something that will always give me warm fuzzies. For example, roadside fruit stands always remind me of her now. So does vibrant autumn foliage, dogwood trees, winding tree-lined roads, and the entire city of Athens, GA.
I almost forgot! Colleen reminds me of Pittsburgh because I was living there the summer Ys Street Band came out and I transcribed most of it then. Best summer ever, by the way.
HOOM reminds me of a summer I was every single day playing GTA IV. While driving around Liberty City streets and killing innocent people, I was listening to this album as a soundtrack. It was fun.
i will always associate "the milk-eyed mender" with my 3 week long trip to europe when i was 17. i had the album but had never listened to it until that trip, when we were constantly hopping on and off trains. we were in very rural parts of france and i felt particularly sequestered. it was a beautiful soundtrack.
but i tend to associate her closely with a relationship from last spring. that has since ended, memories persist. we spent a good part of last may making out to joanna. i drove two hours to see him and i had 'good intentions paving company' on repeat.
last night i was at a party and the room was dark and there were lasers pointing everywhere and it was not my scene and i was feeling drunk and tired, but my friends didnt want to leave. a boy was playing his set, which was dull mostly, until he played this:
i think this must have been an earlier release because it was much tighter last night. but somehow i felt 'all alive' as it was playing. it was a cinematic sort of experience, actually. someone told me my face was glowing. it was very unexpected and welcome. usually i'm critical of these remixes, but i enjoyed it a lot. anyway, yesterday was like a movie for many other reasons, but that was kind of the grand finale because we left right after.
The first time I ever heard '81, I was in the computer room at school (well, computer room/lounge combo) and I was stricken! I shed a little tear. When I first heard 'Book of Right-On' (four years ago. may 10 is my 4 year Joanniversary) It was a summer morning and I was in the office of my old house, so i guess it will always be a summer song.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
One of the ways in which 'memory men' can dazzle us with their feats of recall is to associate the items they wish to remember with elements of a list whose order they can readily bring to mind: landmarks on the way to work or when walking through their home, numbers or words that rhyme with them (one-bun / two-shoe etc). Joanna's songs perhaps lend themselves to this, as - remarkably given her relatively small output to date - she has recorded at least one song beginning with every letter of the alphabet, with the exceptions of Q, U, V, X & Z.
In nearly every case, this is a mainstream release, too, although you do have to delve into the obscurities and collaborations for just one of the letters: L - the unreleased 'Little Wing', or the RF & Lili De La Mora collaboration 'Lifetime' are the pick of 4 rarities.
Given that this is drawn from a list of just 98 songs (those that featured in the JNST), I think this is a strange feat - although (like the one-hour-cuckoo) I do not think it's deliberate.
I will, however, revise this opinion if she records covers of certain songs by Martin Denny, Half Man Half Biscuit, The Zutons, ELO, and The Cranberries on her next album!
