I love the change in soft as chalk, genius! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM9FjL9wYxQ from about 2:47 on, it's amazing. I particularly like the way she sings "who is there" a little later on, works so perfectly with the music. I really didn't like this song but I have always loved that part. Love the song now though!
And every little gust that chances through Will dance in the dust of me and you
Thank you to everyone who has posted above - it's a great compilation of high spots, every one a winner. (If I have the tiniest criticism, it is to ask why she changes the timing in the live Esme, as suggested by doublewuzzy: "Clean aaaaaaas a breeze". Many artists seem to do this, and it seems like variation for the sake of it, usually to the detriment of the song).
Here are two of my many favourites:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr7zXskhy68 1:47 - 1:49, the tiny space between the words "go" and "where", so filled with anticipation, even though it lasts only a second or so.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vcOvPnl7wE There's that typical flowing harp rhythm that comes in at 6:17, but when the "bell" starts to ring at 6:54 until about 8:19 it is captivating. On listening again and again, and concentrating on just that "pling PLING plung pling" it's discernable from a while before it comes to the surface, as though the bell were submerged under the water. Truly wonderful.
1:40 - 2:12, the orchestra totally makes this part. 3:28 and 3:49 - 4:40 (this whole section is perfect - orchestra, harp, voice - gives me tingles every time)
I also have some favourites within Emily! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yW8zvWdxCHg Firstly I like chord progression at 1:34 (and the higher pitched strings part at the repeat). Then the strings at 7:02-7:10 and at 7:26-7:33. And has anyone else noticed that the melody of 'the snow in the nighttime' in Emily is identical to the melody of the line 'To gnaw on it later' in Sadie (not sure about the key, but in terms of intervals between the notes)?
I also love whenever she does that sort of squeak thing with her voice before certain words (I notice she usually does it with the word 'and', particularly in Ys), and whenever she uses cross-rhythms in the instrumentation. I've read that she no longer uses cross-rhythms in her music because she has become bored with them, but I think she does actually play cross-rhythms at the end of Good Intentions Paving Company when she performs it live, so I guess she hasn't totally given them up.
There are probably tons more favourite moments, but those are the main ones that came to mind when I saw this thread.
Yeah I noticed the Sadie/Emily thing straight away the first time I heard it, and got all excited and thought maybe she was going to borrow loads of things from MEM as a sort of quotation thing, but then she didn't (that would've have been so weird haha, I don't know what I was thinking).
In terms of seeing something for my own eyes, it was hearing Baby Birch as the encore in Birmingham last year. I fell in love with the song that night. But for the videos on Youtube, I'd have to go for the one of Joanna performing Sadie at the First Unitarian Church Sanctuary in Philadelphia. The audience are completely into Joanna - I cannot recall seeing a crowd this enthusiastic. When someone requests Peach, Pear, Plum [sic], she laughs at the fan's mistake, and she is caught offguard again when the crowd erupts as she begins to play Sadie. It catches Joanna by surprise, and in that brief second of being taken aback, she laughs again at her discerning audience.
Oh yeah I was at the Birmingham concert, Baby Birch was beautiful. When Ryan Francesconi played that one really loud chord on the guitar right before 'Well mercy me, I'll be goddamned..' my friend sitting next to me jumped like crazy, it was hilarious.
Have One On Me, Sydney Opera House, the "I threw my bouquet and I knocked 'em dead..." part blew me away. I'm still so disappointed at how much energy is lost in the album version.
From 1:08 til 2:30 or so- one of my fave Monkey & Bear crescendos - feels like she build a whirlwind, sweeps you up in it and softly lays you down
Just a quick question...does anyone use JNTV for vids?
Reason I ask, is that it is approaching 2,000 catalogued vids and the non-profit that hosts it is changing their model and will want me to pay a small fee monthly soon.
I started it 10 months ago and it has been free- but looking at this thread, it appears that almost everyone still goes to YouTube- if this is indeed the case, I am not going to continue to support the upcoming costs associated
